  1. That isn't how wRC+ is measured. It's not the same scale as DRS. They can't be used comparatively to measure number of runs created or saved.
  2. It's not just for showing up though. If you could field 9 Yadier Molina's, they'd all have different WAR's, but CF Molina would likely have the WORST. You have to be able to field the position well enough for the positional bonus to outweigh your performance compared to other players at that position.
  3. To me, this speaks more to the state of how the DH position is currently being used league wide. I think any team could find a .780 OPS guy that can't play anywhere else... if they wanted to. But most teams aren't doing that (I don't think). Most teams are using position players at DH. Either to provide added depth and versatility, or to cycle through as mini off days. Where is Kennys Vargas playing these days?
  4. I'm fine with a DH only DH. I just don't think Palka's numbers are very good for a DH. I think every organization has 1 or 2 Palka's buried in AAAA, they don't have much value.
  5. Fair enough. But as long as the other team gets to bat as well, I'm never going to ignore defense and position.
  6. No stat is perfect. But 27 HR's from a poor corner outfielder/DH without any other positive contribution is neither very valuable or impressive, and I think WAR actually reflects that. I think any team could easily find a no glove, no speed, no walk, no average guy anywhere that could hit 27 HR's.
  7. Yes, he does. CF is graded on a more difficult scale than RF, so the positional adjustment is required to account for that. My Palka example is to refute his suggestion that you get a "bonus" just for showing up in the premium positions. Let me try a different angle. Without positional adjustment, a league average RF'er would have the same dWAR as a league average CF'er. But a league average CF'er is more valuable than a league average RF'er, and since WAR is attempting to measure value, it has to adjust to correct that. It would be more flawed than it is without positional adjustment, not less.
  8. Yes. A player that can play centerfield is more valuable than a player who can only play a corner position. Palka wouldn't gain more value there than he would in a corner spot. He'd be expected to get to more balls in CF than he is in RF, so he'd lose more runs than he'd gain from the positional adjustment.
  9. Someone has to play CF, and it can't be Palka, so yes, there has to be a positional adjustment. A player that isn't good enough to play a premium position is going to lose more runs through poor performance than he gains from adjustment, so no you don't really get a bonus just for showing up. I also don't need WAR to see that Hicks is a really good player and Palka isn't, it just makes a handy tool to show roughly how big the delta is.
  10. Asking Miami to take Castro back would likely require another pretty good prospect or two. Would be better off just eating the money and saving the additional prospects.
  11. I'm not arguing that. Harper would bring the team more wins, I'd love if they signed him. I was responding to this: "If we have a chance to get Harper, we should take it.Period.He makes all our pitchers better." Harper is a great hitter, but not much of a fielder. Just trying to get an idea of what you meant here.
  12. If losing an 0.6 bWAR corner outfielder (barely), is one of your biggest mistakes, then you're doing ok. Aaron Hicks was a 4.7 bWAR player last year. 3.9 the year before. They aren't even comparable. There is much more to baseball than hitting HR's. Palka does none of those other things. He's basically a replacement level player.
  13. This is not allowed under the current CBA. Incentives for playing time is allowed. Performance based incentives are not allowed, aside from bonuses for awards.
  14. I don't think the FO signed Schoop with the expectation of repeating last year's numbers.
  15. The player has to be amicable to the extension as well though. Escobar reportedly turned down a Twins extension offer, only to sign a pretty reasonable extension in Arizona. That tells me one of two things. Either the Twins FO has unrealistic expectations of what they can get away with offering for extensions- which might make sense considering rumors of lowball extension talks that never went anywhere with young "core" players last offseason. Or, this just isn't a place that players want to stay.
  16. Quoting myself because it's too late to edit. These career averages are wrong, I accidentally used Schoop instead of Cruz.
  17. Not impossible, no. But I was responding to the idea that it is expected. It's always fun this time of the year to imagine everyone on our favorite team having a career year, but that's not very likely.
  18. They'd have to average 34 HR's each to surpass 100 HR's combined. Only 8 players in the AL hit that many last year. So no, I don't expect anything close to that. 61 is their combined career average. I'll hope for some improvement, but a 70% increase across the board seems highly unlikely.
  19. I think you have it backwards. The front years of a long FA contract are the ones you want to get, not the back ones. If I get to choose, I'm taking ages 26-28 over ages 29-31 every time.
  20. They'll get both. Darvish got a full NTC and an opt out, and Machado and Harper are far better free agents than Darvish was.
  21. Why would those teams give up money and their farm system in 2021, when they can just sign him for money now? Not to mention, any deal with Machado or Harper is probably going to have to include a no trade clause, which severely limits the return you can get by trading them. BTW: This isn't me saying don't sign them. I think they should try to.
  22. That's not what I asked. Of course he would make the team better. I'm asking why he would make the pitchers pitch better. He's not a defensive upgrade. So what about his presence on the team would make the pitchers perform better?
  23. I don't know. Ask the FO, as they are the ones who floated the idea that guys being disappointed with 1 year deals caused their subpar performance. Them saying that, and then continuing to sign 1 year deals, makes it a very legitimate question, which Falvey addresses in the interview.
  24. 1) I'm not sure I agree that they obviously view 2019 as a contending year. In fact, 1 year, bounce back type contracts are exactly the type of deals I'd look for were I rebuilding. They can be turned into long term assets if they bounce back, but don't block internal options with long term commitments if they don't. 2) He's worried about them flopping BECAUSE they are on 1 year deals, as the FO hypothesized as much regarding Morrison and Lynn. So I don't see any contradiction there. 3) Mostly fair, though different people vary on their definition of meaningful games. It's not impossible to make up 5-7 games in September, but I'd venture to guess it's quite a long shot. If they are 7 games back, with say 20 to go, I won't consider those last 20 games meaningful. Others may fairly disagree.
  25. Failing to perform in sports, especially over small sample sizes, doesn't mean the player wasn't trying to perform. I mean, with all due respect, it's preposterous to me to suggest that a pending FA, in the World Series, wasn't trying.
