    I believe the point is that it doesn't have to cripple you if you sign a bad massive FA pitcher contract. I really don't see this as being very complicated or hard to understand.

    This. Let's keep in mind, Benson still (which is amazing) has much better MLB numbers than Hicks does, so I don't know why everyone is already crowning Hicks as blocking Benson, considering how Hicks has played thus far.

    He has a lot of talent. It's a surprise, but certainly shouldn't be a shock. He's got a lot of raw power.

    If anything he's going the wrong way. He drew 11 walks in April, just 5 in May. His OBP has improved slightly, but it is till only .241 in May.

    I think that is pretty well stated. I'm probably in the same boat. I have higher hopes for Meyer than May. I will still think the Span/Meyer trade was the right move even if it doesnt work out, simply because of the upside. But, I will be more results based on the Worley/May deal because I wasn't impressed with either of their upside.

    I guess, like Nick said yesterday, I don't understand why it would be so detrimental to him to let him work on his consistency in the majors? I would understand if he werent one of the 5 best options, then you can justify making him work on that at AAA, but in this case why not let him work on it in the MLB, so he is acclimated by the time 2014 rolls around?

    Oh absolutely. Let me be clear, I am still all for the Meyer trade, even if it never works out. Front line starter potential is worth the risk.

    I don't view Worley as being any better than Blackburn. IMO, we have plenty of back of the rotation candidates, I don't really think we needed another one. I'd rather have kept Revere over a replacement level pitcher.

    Nevermind, some people don't seem to get the difference between a "tool" and production. I'm not claiming he's any good. Baseball history is littered with 5 tool guys who never panned out. That doesn't change the fact that they had the raw tools though.

    He doesn't have to stay on the major league roster. Perhaps you meant the 40 man roster? Texas assigned him to AA.

    No, that is not what the Twins do. There is a HUGE difference between signing a guy (giving up nothing except money), then flipping him for a good prospect, and trading a good prospect for a guy, then forfeiting a 1st round pick to re sign him. That is the difference between a well run organization, and a questionably run organization. The Twins have had opportunities to sell high on guys, and have failed to do so.

    You are right, he should be cut some slack if he is not normally a homer, and that was an isolated opinion. I'll admit I don't go out of my way to read Seth's stuff, but I can't recall him ever being critical of the organization. If I'm wrong in that regard then perhaps I ought to give his stuff a chance.

    Hardy isn't fast, but he does actually have pretty good range. A smart defensive player can make up a lot of range with good instincts and a good first step, at least in the infield. Plus he has very long limbs, which I realize may sound laughable, but it does make a difference in a game of inches.

    Do you understand the difference between tools and actual production? Benson has all 5 tools, he just hasn't figured out a way to use a couple of them to this point.

    True, but at the same time it's not just about the stats at AA. You don't need a 3rd pitch to succeed at AA, a good fastball and nasty breaking ball is more than enough there. Similar to college football QB's who put up huge numbers but don't have the tools to play in the NFL. Again, I have no idea, one way or the other. I just thought I'd point out what SOME scouts think before we pencil him in as a future front line starter. I don't think anyone would claim to know for certain one way or the other right now.

    The baseball prospectus one I guess you could call "anonymous", though most of these scouting reports are written by "staff", so I don't think its as sinister as you suggest. But Jason Parks has put his name on the same sentiment on his podcast supposedly.

    It seems like the Zito signing was quite a few years ago. Did the Giants have all those guys ready to go at that time, or did they open the bank in anticipation of those guys coming up in the years to come?

    I find it interesting that John Bonnes went from being still very high on Joe Benson this year, to agreeing that he should be waived not even 2 months into the season. Seems like a pretty small sample size for that big of a swing in opinion on the guy.

    Yeah, I hope you are right. I'm all for the Meyer trade even if it doesn't pan out. Have to be willing to gamble for front line starters. I'm just saying let's not pencil him in yet. I'm not a scout, and if some respected scouts are saying they don't think he'll develop one, that is enough to at least make me pause and respect that they know more than I do.

    Jason Parks and the "staff" of baseball prospectus, which I believe is headed by Kevin Goldstein, though it doesn't say who wrote that specific report. Those are the 2 specific ones mentioned in the thread, with other posters saying they have also seen/heard the same thing elsewhere.

    Yes, I am aware of that. The scouts mentioned in the adopt a prospect thread don't think he will though. I guess I don't get why automatically assuming he will develop one is okay, but suggesting he might not gets you ripped.

    And they couldn't wait to get rid of guys like Gomez, Revere, and Hardy, which is kind of my point. I'm not saying we haven't had any of these guys, but it seems like they don't value the range that they do bring.
