Twins Name Bailey Ober Game 1 Starter for ALDS
Patzky replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like this and the failure to announce Game 2 starter means it's dependent upon our success with game 1. It could be Pablo if we lose.. but it could be Maeda if we win. -

I'd hope they're starting Keuchel or Paddack.

Phil Cuzzi Ready to Hose Twins Again
Patzky replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There is nothing fun about the prospect of coming out of the clubhouse on Tuesday afternoon and seeing Phil Cuzzi behind the plate. If You're the Twins, that prospect is even worse than seeing CB Bucknor, Laz Diaz, or Angel Hernandez. Cuzzi is Khan to Captain Kirk Baldelli. -

Spot on. I have wondered if there's something about Sonny's pace or kismet that lulls the team to sleep when the Twins batters step to the plate. Is that even possible? Pablo gets a ton of run support, does he do something on the mound outside of pitching well that fires up the team? Just wondering.. there 'shouldn't' be a correlation, but..

I'd say Royce Lewis availability will dictate a lot of how the roster looks, even more than Correa's (pretty sure he'll be ready.) The supporting cast looks (Farmer, Castro, Stevenson, Solano) like it will be making or breaking this team again, which isn't a horrible thing considering their success so far. I expect one of the rookies (Wallner, Julien, Kirilloff, Jeffers) to shine and one of the vets (Vasquez, Kepler, Polanco, Correa, Buxton) to tank. Best guess, Kirilloff comes up big and Buxton doesn't. But no Royce Lewis adds so much more pressure.. Also watch out for the trademark One Big Inning from potential game one starter Sonny Gray. If we can spot it and nip it in the bud (typically a borderline ball strike call is involved) we can mitigate. A disastrous game one that unexpectedly (avoidably) spirals out of control would be a deal breaker.. As Pablo showed last night those innings can show up at any time. And subbing in Stewart or Varland for a scuffling Duran needs to be a possibility..

Those day night splits may be as much due to the opponent and the short turnaround as the lighting, as you indicated. My general impressions are that the team looks 'tired' on getaway days.. which are usually days.. no late night tv for the guys if they get a 3 pm start the next day.

Twins batters: Don't hit the ball to Varsho. We already used up all our good juju against him for the season. 😊

Didn't take long to get help, I'm glad they made the move. Larnach back up, Correa to IL eligible to return during the Colorado series.

Right now the Twins have a depleted bench. If catching Houston is a possibility I'd love to replenish it with Larnach but I have a feeling Joey G is going to get the call. And Brock Stewart looks ready as ever.

At least the pitching and hitting stunk simultaneously. Maybe this shows how you need sparkplugs like Solano and Castro in the lineup to get the big bat engine greased. Correa needs to sit at least until they get home. (But hope not much past that.)

Again we have depth over top shelf pour. Obviously Sonny and Pablo 1-2 probably in that order (and hope Sonny doesn't have that one inning to taint the whole series) 3 could be Kenta, or Ryan.. maybe a stretch to Paddack or Varland.. even a further stretch to Bailey Ober or Keuchel. Let's how we don't have to stretch that far. Seven startees and two stars.

You make it sound like Julien is susceptible to umpires with wide (not tall) strike zones. It would be interesting to match these stats with specific umpires as well as pitchers to see what conclusions there are. Earlier this year it was mentioned that the minor league callups had a great perception of the strike zone ostensibly because they knew they could appeal a given pitch. Obviously not an option at Target Field .

Seems like Julien pulls a Mitch McConnell and freezes at the most inopportune times.
