This is why I would like to see one of Wallner, Larnach, or Lewis move to 1B in the offseason. I just see Correa becoming a more permanent DH and turning into Javier Baez prior to his resurgence this year. You have Lee or Keaschall for SS in the near future.

Fully agree that Swanson made a good play recovering to start the DP. Also can agree that if Correa moved faster than a John Deere Model A at a tractor pull, that he may have actually beat out the double play.

I made this observation before the game started about Juan Soto doing the same thing earlier today, except Holliday booted the ball on the transition and still almost threw Soto out. Must be something about making over $30M+ a year just weighs you down so you can't move as fast.

Even non-Twins players jog to first in embarassing fashion. Watching the early game (Mets - Orioles), Juan Soto was jogging to first base, Holliday juggles the ball, and Soto barely legs it out once he realized that Holliday misplayed the ball.

Correct. The analysts stated this last night as well as they were surprised that the Cubs catcher actually threw through to get Wallner considering that the Twins have tried this before in the Rays series. The analysts suggested it was an error either by the catcher or the coaches for not catching it and warning the catcher of it. While I like the aggressiveness, I agree that it shouldn't be a permanent strategy and eventually we will run into outs, kind of like the contact play we kept running over and over earlier this season.

I pretty much reference Sportrac's multi-year contract page any time I want to discuss potential trades and how this will affect the team in future years. I don't see the current ownership raising payroll while they are trying to sell the team. I've been pleasantly surprised this season that ownership has the payroll where it actually is now considering all offseason it was reported that payroll had to be cut down to near $130M. As a team, we currently have too many players in the "wait-and-see" category: Royce Lewis, Larnach, Wallner, SWR, Ober, Festa, Matthews (when back from IL), Keaschall, Julien, and Miranda. Then there's the next group of prospects expected to graduate in the next two years: Eeles, Jenkins, Adams, Cory Lewis, Prielipp, Raya, and E-Rod. That seems to be more players than positions available. Any trade of Ryan for high-end prospects better be position specific, with catcher and future starters being the biggest needs. I think you can quietly have one of Larnach, Wallner, or Royce Lewis pick up a 1B glove with the expectation that they will work on it in the offseason rather than what Boston did with Devers this season or what the Twins did last fall in trying to force Lewis to play 2B. Ultimately, I don't see a Joe Ryan trade netting us what we need to truly get into a rebuild mode nor retooling, just a lesser version of what we have been experiencing the past few years. Ryan still has two more years of arbitration left and we can re-evaluate his value and potential value in the future. IMHO, trading Pablo Lopez in the offseason or next year would probably be the smarter move with the intention of taking that money and trying to sign Joe Ryan to an extension. If they do move Ryan in the near future, the FO is lucky that they have spent so little in marketing him to the fans that the average fan won't miss him. 😑

I think I made this comment somewhere else. Tuesday, when it was Perk "leading" the broadcast, it seemed disjointed, and everyone was gaining their footing. Last night, with Morneau leading the broadcast, it was a much cleaner broadcast. I think that had more to do with giving kudos to the production team and Audra taking a little more of the broadcast transitions and making adjustments from Monday's broadcast. Last night's broadcast is one that, if repeated, would be something I could watch or listen to on a more consistent basis or as an alternate broadcast. My suggestion would be to do this type of broadcast during a Players weekend, Hall of Fame weekend, or a weekend during the season when a lot of players are back in Minneapolis when you can get the diversity of stories.

That was similar to Chapman early in his career in Cincinatti. He was very wild in Cincinatti. Eventually learned how to channel those pitches in the zone and will have a great career. Hopefully Duran takes the same path.

Great win by the Twins! Great series win. The best matchup for a Twins win coming into this series is actually tomorrow. I love the fact that it looks like this team is responding by feeling their backs to the wall. I'm sure they hear all the rumors as well that other team's scouts are in the stands.

I know Keirsey Jr struck out there, but that was a professional at bat for a player that hardly gets any PA.

I had honestly thought that when Marney Gellner was in Audra's spot and was given a chance to call a couple of spring training games. It just didn't work out for Marney in terms of staying with the Twins.

Tonight is definitely better than last night. Morneau may have better timing or just more experience in the booth to listen to the production guys in the truck. I could listen to this on an extended basis.

I have ESPN's Gamecast going as well and they claim that he is Day-to-Day with a return date of tomorrow (July 10th). For reference, they also have already updated Buxton to Day-to-Day as well. Edit: Just saw the post that Duran is reportedly available tonight.

You're obviously right in that they need to score runs and there's always a commenter on here that says that you need to win the games in front of you. I made the argument earlier that SWR has faced some good lineups since coming back from AAA and giving him a chance to win is always important. That doesn't mean that there won't be a price to pay. Hypothetically, let's assume we get one of Ober or Matthews back before the end of July and we are able to rally to be a .500 team at the trade deadline. I assume that puts us within a couple of games of the wild card and we do nothing at the deadline. I don't see either Ober or Matthews going more than 5 innings as they build back up so now you have an entire rotation that can only go 5 innings, apologies to Joe Ryan. There's a 10-game stretch in August that will likely kill the bullpen (3 v KC, 3 @ NYY, 4 v DET). Our poor planning of not allowing these pitchers to go more than 5 innings will come back to haunt us when the bullpen is taxed and we are depending on Wentz to get critical outs or allowing SWR or another pitcher to try to get another inning in a critical situation when they haven't been expected to all season.

I missed the game thread tonight, so I had to go back and read it and the expected comments about not letting SWR shake himself of the training wheels were all on there. I fully agree with one of the commenters that you could have had SWR go back out for the sixth with a batter-by-batter approach with Coulombe and/or Stewart warmed up to come in if he gets in trouble. Rocco was expecting Coulombe to pitch to Suzuki (RH) anyway so why not let SWR try to get another batter or two. I did go back through SWR's game logs since coming back from AAA and he has faced some good lineups: TEX, HOU, MIL, SEA, MIA, AND CHC. Other than Miami, these are all decent lineups, and you could make an argument for not letting him face this lineup a third time. What I see that frustrates me the most is that Rocco & Co. have a plan and want to stick to the plan, like planning out a two-week family vacation rather than managing the game. As for the all-analyst broadcast, loved it as a niche thing. I may not like as much after an entire series of this but tonight was nice. The transitions coming in and out of commercial breaks were disjointed and some of the in-game things such as who is warming up in the bullpen or who is in the on-deck circle could have been better. I see that as an additional duty for the production guys to let them know about such things to point out while they are doing this all-analyst experiment. Going forward, I would like to see this as multiple single games throughout a season and not a single series. Finally, a shout out to our old friend, Caleb Thielbar, the pride of South Dakota State Jackrabbit baseball! 🙂

I guess my point was that they didn't select many relief pitchers and it soon becomes a numbers game. I've already made my pitch on who Joe Ryan should have replaced on the All-Star roster in swapping him out for Bryan Woo.

If you believe that the Twins are eventually going to be sellers, what does Buxton or the Twins have left to lose? He's having one of if not the best year of his career. He gets to participate in front of his family and friends in Atlanta. His son is excited for him. Byron calls it a once in a lifetime opportunity. Maybe he will get a chance to show a national audience what could have been had he been able to stay healthy throughout his career. He deserves this opportunity and I'm not going to complain about him taking it.

All 3 relievers with Munoz, Hader, and Chapman? I do agree that had the Twins played better as a team that Ryan probably would have been picked. This was the comparison that ESPN ran with their snub article comparing all of these pitchers and suggesting that you could have picked any three of five and been fine. For reference, deGrom, Woo, and Bubic made the team, and you would have to pick a Texas pitcher as your three as that is their only representative. I made the suggestion that Ryan should have been picked over Woo, but Seattle has a better record AND the reputation of a better pitching staff than the Twins, so they picked the best pitcher out of this year's Seattle rotation, which is Woo.

I would argue that Cohen meddled too much in the construction of the team and Billy Eppler was trying his best to clean up the mess that he was told to assemble. The Twins are not in the same situation as Falvey not only created the mess, but you're also asking Falvey to construct a better nucleus considering the current track record. Finally, the players the Mets traded that season had more value to contending teams than the Twins have, Verlander and Scherzer in particular AND paid $35M each to the Astros and Rangers for the privilege of taking those players off of the Mets's hands. A similar transaction for the Twins would be if they could trade Correa and pay the other team to take him off their hands. Do you see the Twins paying someone to take Correa?

Spencer Torkelson would like to come into the conversation. I'm not trying to compare Torkelson to Wallner or suggest that Torkelson or Wallner are considered the best hitters in the league. I would just point out that Torkelson struggled in 2024, sent down to AAA for just over 1/3 of the season, and was on the verge of being replaced on the roster. Obviously, the main differences are that there are no readily immediate replacements for Wallner, nor do I believe the coaching staff is up to the challenge of fixing Wallner. Other examples could be Larnach or Lewis as it seems like the staff have no answers in helping them through their respective struggles either. Another example can be that Lee complimented his father's coaching staff at Cal Tech - SLO for his bat handling skills resulting in the game-winning hit instead of any coaching that the current staff has done for him. We can only hope that a team sale comes sooner rather than later for players like Lee, Lewis, and Wallner so there can be a complete turnover of the staff in the entire system rather than eventually trade them as the team failed to properly develop them as the players that they originally showed promise to be. As the Joker has so eloquently stated in the 1989 Batman movie, "This town (team) needs an enema!".

Looks like we are not alone in thinking Joe Ryan was snubbed. Even the hack writers at ESPN listed Ryan as the biggest AL pitcher snub, even though they taper their outrage by suggesting that you could have pulled out of a hat three of five pitchers between Ryan, Woo from Seattle, Bubic from KC, and deGrom or Eovaldi from Texas. So let's look at it and you pick three of five. One note being that you MUST pick a Texas pitcher as that is their only representative. IMO, Ryan should replace Woo. This game is like some we see throughout the season. Had you asked us to go into the series that we won the first two games and had a chance to sweep with Joe Ryan on the mound, we would have been ecstatic with the result. It's unfortunate the way the game turned out, but I'm going to keep my expectations in check and be happy with the weekend's result. As for the game, I'm happy to see that the offense got up off the mat and fought back and not roll over like we have in so many of these games this year and lose 2-1 and saddle Ryan with the hard-luck loss. We have constantly made the point on TD in the comments and in articles that the lack of focus, fundamentals, and attention to detail will eventually haunt us. Looks like another refresher in INF fielding practice with PFP is in order. The Rays are fast as a team, but the Cubs aren't exactly that much slower than the Rays. I also liked the aggressive send by Watkins for Larnach to score and Wallner attempting to steal another base. Even though Wallner was ruled out, it's at least shows that someone wants to show initiative and recognize that station to station baserunning isn't working, whether that is just Wallner or a directive from the coaching staff.
