  1. Speaking of lefty fireballers, I see that Scott Diamond was edged out by Chi Wei Hu this afternoon. God, I miss him.
  2. I can see your point. I guess I hadn't really thought there was any great likelihood of getting any more than maybe a couple wins difference between May and Milone, but you may be right. They seem pretty interchangeable to me, but they may be a lot less so than I'm capable of discerning.
  3. Franky, I don't give a rat's rear end what they do with Milone, Pelfrey, or any of the mid-to-back rotation and mop-up relief types. I'm happy they have a surplus of options, but we're treading water until or unless a couple guys with mid-to-front rotation and high-leverage talent emerge. And right now, the viable candidates to fill those roles are laboring in Chattanooga. Mr. Ryan, make the phone calls please. Tell your fellow GM's you have an over-supply of pitching and need to cull the herd. But sit tight unless some GM gets desperate or temporarily stupid and offers a nice overpay for ANY of these players. But don't get snookered into taking a Sam Fuld type for Milone, OK?
  4. And what about that Thompson mess?
  5. If we had a beat writer or two that would ask an occasional relevant question, we might actuallyy know....
  6. That's because we're not done discussing the mess caused by the Boyer decision.
  7. We're starting to get a real sense for what Molitor values in his players. Just read his comments about Vargas, where he describes his muddled head. He just praised Hicks for "being engaged". He was effusive in his praise earlier for Bernier, and it certainly wasn't related to his hitting. His comments about Rosario tend to emphasize his mental approach. Maybe he prefers Herrmann to Pinto for some of the same reasons. Molitor isn't playing Suzuki and Esco in the middle of the order INSTEAD of playing "big hitters" in those spots, though. With Arcia out, his choices are limited right now. I'm confident that Molitor influenced the decision to send Vargas down, and his comments reflect an interest in Vargas's long-term effectiveness and why a stint in AAA might help. I also think the Bernier selection was his call.
  8. This is one of the very best first-hand reports we've ever gotten here! Very very nice, jokin. Even a number of the secondary prospects on this club are close to being at least long shots to make it. Just wow.
  9. That was much better, Dave.
  10. Dave, I'm no fan of Souhan either, but aren't you guilty of taking a big pot shot at Souhan (and Hunter previously) moreso than you say others are taking at Mauer? No need for the name-calling, is there? And your claim here that Hunter (and maybe Molitor and Perkins?) have no added influence on the team atmosphere? Was the atmosphere bad when they were 1-6? Did the atmosphere only get better once they strung some wins together? Not buying that. Several reporters and columnists, people who are close to the situation and presumably possessing at least some professional integrity, are contradicting you. I'm going with them.
  11. I really think this is a very biased interpretation of things, Thrylos. Yes, those players you cited, and clearly dislike, are outgoing, even garrulous. But to name-call is not very classy. I doubt you have evidence that these players have a history of hoarding credit. I think that's a cheap shot myself. Lohse, Slowey, and Garza had issues with the Twins' brass and management, not the other way around.
  12. To be fair, it's possible that Souhan's making valid observations. Kevin Gorg and LaVelle were on Rosen's show. Gorg remarked about how different (better) the clubhouse atmosphere was. Neal said several players have told him that Hunter's presence has been hugely positive. I really doubt that these comments are strictly a result of Molitor, Hunter, and Perkins being friendly with the media. And think about it, aren't team leaders often also the media go-to guys?
  13. The MLB pen? Don't you think he'd be chewed up and spit out up here right now?
  14. I'd guess that a lot more of us got a bad vibe about this signing than not. I know I did. Intelligent and sensible arguments have been presented both in favor and in opposition. The only commenters that qualify to hop over to the corner and put on a dunce cap are the ones who either declared it the worst or best signing ever with no room for argument about it, and of course those who in one way or another put a dunce cap on Ryan for making an unquestionably bad decision.
  15. My Uncle Arvid drives a Sierra.
  16. This is the stuff that keeps us all so dang humble.
  17. Overwhelmingly, the consensus of the commenters on this thread is that Buxton will (or should) be up in a matter of weeks. I wonder what the majority vote would have been four weeks ago. My guess is "a year away." "By September" was a minority vote, don't you think? Crazy game, this baseball.
  18. I could see this. Molitor is starting to give us some hints by virtue of his choice of words when he talks about his young players, and he appears to be insistent about staying engaged, a trait in limited supply with Mr. Arcia lately.
  19. I agree with all of these points Chief. Where I see things a bit differently is 1) I think performance as reflected in box scores WAS part of the decision process; 2) Pelfrey wasn't signed solely because he's a good guy; and 3) Rosario has shown flashes, as Molitor articulated well, and it's not some act of benevolence here.
  20. I'm getting so darned confused. A few days ago I was digesting the fact that the Twins were losing games because of Hunter. Now I'm hearing a contradictory fact that they're winning games in spite of Hunter. I agree with Brock. Given the coming transition to Buxton, Rosario, Arcia, and perhaps Hicks, and the overwhelming likelihood that Hunter is replaced no later than next spring and probably earlier, this is a problem that has an eventual solution and that is hardly a devastating one. Hell, I'm going to concentrate my disgust on how terrible Boyer is.
  21. Exactly true, they make these decisions strictly NOT on the basis of the box scores. They have professional coaches watching every AB, every play the guy's involved in, plus his BP's, what time he arrives at the park, etc. After reading Wetmore's interview, I don't have any further questions about their reasoning, and it isn't all that baffling, given the temporary nature of the call-up.
  22. I second that. You might ask, "what are you seconding, my being baffled at agreeing with the FO, or finding the move sensible?" My answer is yes.
