  1. Good catch. Fixed.
  2. He's up for the night game and going back. They've shuffled things around so Nolasco starts the afternoon game and Pelfrey the evening game. Johnson is here for bullpen support.
  3. Kris Johnson takes the 26th Man spot and starts the nightcap on Thursday. Nolasco starts Friday, and they're back on the beam, such as it is.
  4. I don't wish him any ill will, and I hope he recovers. But I also hope young players take a lesson from this. Take the opportunities you are given and don't hold out for a huge payout. Tomorrow isn't a given to any of us.
  5. It was a three-year deal. So he had two years left on it when they DFA'd him.
  6. The main reason they called up Johnson instead of Meyer is he's on the 40-man and Meyer isn't. It's kind of a free move with the 25th man rule.
  7. Nobody thought they would DFA Nick Blackburn, who had two years and $10 million left on his contract. They didn't hesitate to do that.
  8. Correia's trade value will never be much, perhaps a fringe low-level minor leaguer like Sulbarran. No big whoop.
  9. The Santana thing is a constant throughout Anderson's tenure. He favors veteran status over any other consideration. This is why Correia started ahead of Hughes and Gibson this year, even though he's the fourth-best pitcher in the rotation, ahead of only Pelfrey, which is not saying much. I think you can't compare position player development to pitcher development. You can develop as a pitcher in the major leagues much easier than you can as a position player. The top consideration is who is best placed to get outs right now. All pitchers are developing and making adjustments all the time. If Meyer is better right now, they should make room for him. IMHO, he's better than both Pelfrey and Correia right now. By the end of the season, he will be the ace of the staff, without much question.
  10. No, I just think he was throwing at him. He brushed him back three times and hit him with Ball 4. It was an accident that he fractured his wrist. But if you throw at guys, accidents will happen.
  11. The problem isn't with the size of the pen but with the quality of the starters. When they swap out Pelfrey and Deduno and DFA Correia in favor Meyer, they will not need an eight-man pen. As long as they cling to sunk costs who can't complete five innings, they will need eight guys in the pen. Arcia for Hermann is easy (when Arcia is ready). Willingham's spot will have to come at the expense of a bullpen arm. So they better have that starting pitching thing figured out by mid-to-late June. If they want to make room for Nunez, they'll have to make Escobar the starter and DFA Florimon.
  12. I think it's all part of the rehab. They don't want him to re-injure it, so they're being careful. He's not there yet. His first game looks better in the box score than it was. He had an infield hit and another hit that should have been scored an error, according to observers. Since then, he's walked a couple of times, but hasn't hit the ball especially hard. He still needs to get his timing back and get into playing shape. This is like spring training II for him. I expect it to be at least a couple of weeks. I wouldn't be surprised if he uses the full 20 days of his rehab.
  13. I agree with a- wan. This thread is about Arcia, who will be ready soon. Willingham isn't even swinging a bat yet. When he starts swinging next month, he'll need to go out on a rehab assignment for 20 days or so before joining the team. My guesstimate is late June for his return. A lot can happen in the intervening weeks.
  14. If he's on an innings limit, why would you burn those precious innings in AAA? I'm all for waiting until he's ready. But if he's got nothing left to learn at AAA, bring him up. Also, this contract stuff is nonsense. He'll get a long-term deal long before he's arbitration eligible.
  15. I'm more concerned when teams throw at players for competitive reasons. As I said before, it sure seemed like Masterson was trying to hurt Willingham by repeatedly throwing at him. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that if you remove the other team's best hitter for half a season by breaking his wrist, you have a better chance to beat that team in the division.
  16. That's not what I've seen. Though, admittedly, I've only seen him catch three games on TV. But he sets a good target. He has a strong arm, which was accurate early and has looked a bit rusty lately. His form on catch-and-tag plays is as good as I've seen. And he is the second best guy the Twins have at blocking pitches. It's easy to say he has work to do, which I will freely admit. But he is clearly the second best defensive catcher in the system. Having watched Hermann and Fryer, I can say they belong in AAA, at that. They're not even close at any of the skills I list above. Pinto is not great, but he is adequate. And he is learning from the best tutor in the organization--Terry Steinbach. People forget when they criticize guys: It's not about all the stuff guys have to work on. It's how they stack up against the competition in the organization. Every guy has stuff to work on. But as long as he's better than the guy below him, there should be no talk of sending him down in favor of an inferior player. Should he start ahead of Suzuki? Not at this time. But he's still young for a catcher. And he can learn.
  17. Huh? He's hitting .402/.495/897 this year .398/.566/.963. He has nothing left to prove in AAA. He's made a couple of throwing errors, but otherwise, he's done a nice job receiving when given the opportunity. Who would you have as the back-up if not him?
  18. My theory is he came back too early on the elbow, and that put a lot of stress on the shoulder, which he damaged late last year. Now he doesn't have the velo he needs to be effective with his marginal secondary offerings.
  19. This. Meyer will not reach arbitration years without a long-term deal. I can understand waiting 'till June for a guy like Santana, who has about a 60% chance of being the long-term answer at short. Meyer has a 99% chance of being a long-term answer in the starting rotation. The 1% is injury-related. He has more ability than any pitcher I've ever seen in the Twins system, including Santana and Liriano.
  20. Yep, Joe will never catch again, not to save his knees, but primarily to save his brain. My sense is the concussion was much more serious than they let on, and they can't risk another one. As it is, I don't think he's all the way back from it. He's not seeing the ball as well as he was before it. Whether that's from residual affects or the long lay-off is anyone's guess. Worst case, you lose the DH if Pinto has to catch and you pinch hit for the pitcher. With relievers coming in every inning, that's not a big deal. This is such a minor risk compared to the potential reward of having both Arcia and Pinto in the same line-up together, it should be a nonsissue. But, this is Gardy. I just wish the FO would put the best roster together and tell Gardy to manage what he gets. We've seen what happens when they give him too much authority over the roster. The irony of Castro over Bartlett coming around to Bartlett over Presley is just mind boggling. The FO needs to stabilize the roster and make Gardy do the job he's paid to do.
  21. He'll have his whole rehab assignment to get right. That's 20 games. At the end of that period, if he isn't raking, you can option him. I'd be very surprised if he isn't raking in 20 games. Arcia is a major league hitter. Hermann is a AAAA player. It's that simple. Why is AAA always the answer when guys struggle? Guys have slumps at different times of the year. If they're good hitters, they'll find their way out of slumps. Arcia is a good hitter.
  22. I was going to say the same thing as Boom Boom. I know Gardy likes Hermann's versatility, but why have a .600 OPS guy who might catch 9 innings a month instead of an .800 OPS guy who will never catch?
  23. It would be interesting to see the difference between where the Suzuki sets up and where the pitches are thrown. I've seen more pitches across the plate from his glove than I remember seeing from a Twins staff. And a lot of pitches are much higher than his glove. With the exception of Gibson, they have not been hitting his glove regularly. Leadership means nothing if they don't execute the pitches he calls.
  24. The point is, he was unlikely to get $5 Million for one year, let alone two. But the Twins wanted to get more out of him than they got last year. So they became victims of a classic blunder--the sunk cost fallacy, whereby you keep playing a losing hand because you've already bet a lot on it.
  25. That's technicality, easily remedied with a DFA. Based on Antony's recent comments, he's next in line.
