  1. Well,... Bruno is the guy who coaches the players to be more patient. But Goin is the guy who coaches the coaches. Gardy has a running joke about the reports he's supposed to take into account and pass to his field staff. That's what I'm talking about. To think that just a few years ago, they had Ulger telling all the hitters to swing at the first pitch.
  2. It's definitely growing in influence, but that influence looks more apparent for the field staff than the FO. For example, the team has a noticeably more patient approach than past teams. That's Goin's influence in action.
  3. It's amazing that Vava can hit like he can with one eye. It's a great story.
  4. OK, sorry I used loose language.
  5. Apparently, Antony doesn't understand the concept. When asked why he signed Pelfrey to a two-year deal after last year's debacle, he said he wanted to see some benefit from last year's investment. It is one of the more baffling things the guy has ever said publicly. And this is a guy who defended the Delmon Young trade in 2010, and praised choosing Nishioka over Hardy because the former is more athletic.
  6. With relievers, you deal in small samples. There are never enough innings to draw conclusions from the numbers with relievers. That's why we use scouting. As often as not, he has come in with runners on base and thrown his fastball down the middle to the first hitter, who smacked it into the outfield for RBI. That has to stop.
  7. Another quantity start* for Pelfrey today. *4 innings, 5 runs or less.
  8. He doesn't look like the same pitcher this year. He's not throwing as hard, nor does his stuff have as much sink to it. If I were a pitching coach, I would say he's not finishing his pitches, which is why they're slower, straighter and higher than they were late last year. Is it s physical issue preventing him from having good mechanics? That's my suspicion.
  9. It's to clear the bases for the next guy. Seriously, the guy has allowed 5 of 9 inherited runners to score. Someone needs to tell him that a 95 MPH straight fastball down the middle is a juicy treat for major league hitters.
  10. This. I was hesitant looking at his career numbers. Perhaps last year was an abberation and he was due for a huge regression? Well, I think it shows that he's turned a corner. At the very least, he deserves an everyday shot for at least a month. Maybe he's the answer. We'll never know if don't give him a shot. Now Fuld, on the other hand, is not the answer in center. Not everyday. Not every at bat. Especially not against lefthanders. But that's for another thread.
  11. BTW, Why the heck does he always send Tonkin in to throw fastballs down the middle with guys on base? The guy has allowed 5 out of 9 inherited runners to score. Let Gibson finish the damn inning. I'm done with this game. Gardy's managed another loss.
  12. Bert: "Bad decision by Plouffe swinging at that pitch." Bad decision by the Twins to give him the green light. Add to the bad decision to let Fuld hit against the left-hander. Add it up and it's another crappy game managed by Gardy in the late innings. I'm getting pretty tired of this BS.
  13. WTF?!?!?! 3-0 with the bases loaded as the tying run? Now I've seen everything.
  14. Why didn't Gardy pinch hit Hicks for Fuld there?
  15. I think they should release every player who ever made a mistake. Then they'd have no players, but at least they'd only have mistake-free ones.
  16. I just don't see why you close one hole by opening another. How many second basemen have the Twins had since Knoblauch?
  17. I just can't believe Suzuki didn't tag him. It was so easy.
  18. Esco: Great hit. Never make the third out at third.
  19. Drew is such a good defensive catcher. Dick: "I don't know if I ever saw that from Butera." What's that you say, he had a lot of passed balls in a Twins uniform? 2010 4 2011 7 2012 4
  20. I agree that it is incredibly stupid to do something the league tests for, legal or not. But I don't think it means anything in particular beyond stupidity. Perhaps he thought he wouldn't get caught. Perhaps he was out with friends and they offered and he accepted without thinking about the consequences. Speaking of which, I've heard of guys testing positive after just being in a car with guys smoking, without actually partaking themselves. (At least that's what they said.) (Also, Clinton didn't inhale.) I can think of myriad ways this mistake can manifest itself with a player. The important thing is he accepts his mistake and I have 99% confidence that he'll never do it again (at least until he's on the 40-man).
  21. I don't think you mess with Dozier. I think he's found a home and you don't fix what ain't broke. Santana is the logical choice. But do we really want to trust the position to a rookie now that we're close to contending? I think they'll wait 'till midyear and call him up to see what we have. If he plays like Pinto, you've got something. If he plays like Hicks, maybe you start working on trade targets.
  22. Lowrie never was a viable target. He's not as bad as Cabrera, but he's a career negative fielder and he's getting worse. I'm shocked the A's use him at short. He can barely make it across the diamond with his throws.
  23. Drew UZR/OPS numbers by year: 2007 -12.4/.683 2008 -15.9/.836 2009 2.6/.748 2010 8.9/.810 2011 4.3/.713 2012 -7.0/.657 2013 5.3/.777 I look for major regression in 2015 at age 32. Pass. Cabrera UZR/OPS by year: 2008 -2.0/.713 2009 -5.0/.799 2010 -5.5/.637 2011 -11.0/.792 2012 -7.7/.762 2013 -12.8/.700 He's already regressing, and his defense is well below average. Pass. JJ Hardy UZR/OPS by year 2007 12.8/.786 2008 6.4/.821 2009 6.8/.659 2010 7.4/.714 2011 8.8/.801 2012 12.4/.671 2013 6.0/.738 We missed out on his best years. We could have signed him to a long-term deal. He said he wanted it. Sigh. Now I just see regression in his future. Pass The Twins better hope Santana develops, or they can acquire a good shortstop. Because the FA market is looking thin.
  24. I understand, but if it is legal, should it trigger a suspension? What if you played for Colorado Springs or Tacoma and tested positive for MJ? You would be getting a suspension for using something you could buy in the corner store.
  25. I don't understand why the drug is illegal in the first place. Within 10 years, it will be a legal recreational drug across the country, as states replicate CO to close revenue gaps and reduce the burden of MJ on their prison systems (estimated at more than a third of the inmates). That kind of puts it in context. Yeah it was a 50-game suspension, but thousands of people are serving life sentences for three counts of MJ possession in California alone, where you can buy the stuff in vending machines with a prescription.
