1. for OF I meant give Parmelee another shot out there this year. Also wouldn't mind seeing Plouffe get some outfield reps if/when Sano comes out. I'd love to see if Plouffe could fill a utility DH/corner OF/IF role at some point.
2. You're right, I guess I see SS as the most obvious position where we don't have someone on the major league roster or strong prospects that inspire confidence. 1B - Mauer 2B - Dozier w/ Rosario, Polanco, and Santana as prospects 3B - Sano nuff said C - Pinto - looked good, would like if we had a better veteran C on the roster OF - Arcia, Hicks, Buxton, possibly Rosario, Kepler - guys close probably wouldn't hurt to add a good veteran if one was available. Say a guy like Cruz was cheap but really I'd rather see the guys we have get time out there this year. Give Kepler another shot. So that leaves SS - Florimon . . . maybe Santana? maybe Goodrum? Maybe Polanco. I guess this one leaves me as the hardest to fill in free agency and the least talented in the system. So no we are not "set" but we at least appear to have a plan of some sort and good potential at most positions over the next couple years. Really the only set position we have is 1B I suppose.
3. So, I'll start this thread by saying I know very little about Diaz but I'm very intrigued and want to know more. SS is the main position we don't have a current long term player at and we don't have a top prospect coming through the system to fill the void. We can argue back and forth about Santana, Polanco, and Goodrum being our SS of the future but that's not the point. Right now most positions we are either pretty set at or have a top prospect coming to fill the void. The main opening appears to be at SS in my opinion. We argued a lot about Stephen Drew but now I'd like to see the same argument for Diaz. Here's my questions/talking points. I honestly know little about him other than he's Cuban and he lied about his age. He's a SS and he's supposed to make some good money. Is he Major League ready? if not how close? Is he a sure thing to stick at SS defensively? How much better of a prospect is he than our current MI guys like Santana/Goodrum/Polanco? How much is he worth/how long term of deal should the Twins be willing to go?
4. Re: Arcia's defense. I know he didn't look good out there this year but I'm still expecting some improvement from him. Will he ever be a plus defender? I doubt it but I think he could be average. He's got some speed at least and he actually played some CF in the minors which makes me think he's got to be better than what we saw last year. He was also playing LF most instead of RF where he spent most of his time in the minors. In fact when checking it quickly, I also noticed that he has played twice as many games in CF than he has in the LF. So stick him in right next year and see if he improves.
5. What I believe I heard was it was considered a "drug of abuse" however the story I read was that it was a painkiller he had previously been approved to take. When he was in pain again he took it again but without a prescription therefore it was considered a drug of abuse in this scenario. Hopefully was just an honest mistake, maybe this was just a bs coverup story to keep him from looking bad. That is what I remember reading awhile back though.
6. I really liked the trade and still do. Am I expecting a ton from Gilmartin? No, but he could round into a mid to back of the rotation starter or . . . ooorrr he could convert to bullpen and tick up his velocity a bit. It was a nice piece to get for someone we seemed willing to almost give away.
7. Good points for sure. Is he an all star? No, will he ever be? Doubtful. However even if he's somewhere in between these numbers say he can be around a .700 OPS guy with plus defense at 2B there's a lot of value in that. I think his floor is a .650 OPS guy with plus defense at 2B maybe transitioning to a utility guy if he never gets above that. His ceiling though is that guy we saw from June - September. My expectation is around a .750 OPS which is great for a good defensive 2B.
8. I have to agree. I'm assuming it has something to do with the hot start he had last year as well. I can't say much about his defense as I don't remember studying him all that closely. Florimon looked great defensively by my eye test and seems to be an ok stopgap until the someone can come up and supplant him. I'm all for getting Drew or Diaz as Florimon isn't likely the long term answer but Escobar definitely isn't.
9. http://www.masnsports.com/nationals_pastime/2013/10/looking-back-on-the-two-winter-trades.html For what its worth here's an article written by a DC sportswriter after the 2013 season. At this point this trade really looks win win. Span performed decently and Meyer was great but had the injury issues. As in any trade involving prospects its going to be awhile til we can evaluate this one fully.
10. Also, Denard Span's OPS over the past four years is .703 to give a little context.
11. I think I've posted this before in other threads on Aaron Hicks but if you throw out those awful first ten games, he still put up odd looking numbers but for the OPS buff, they were at least "ok" April 15th - July 31st. .222/.290/.397/.687 He still had a 3 - 1 K/BB ratio which sucks but he put some power out there took a few more walks and at least made some contact. It wouldn't take a lot for him to switch that to a 260/.330/.420 line. A little more discipline and a little more luck on BABIP could get him there. I'm confident he'll be much better this year. May never be an allstar but I think he can at least be a solid role player.

.222 .290 .397 .687

12. I like some of it but I don't like trading Rosario and Hicks at this point. I think their value is down due to Hicks rough first year and Rosario due to the suspension. Just seems like it would be better to keep those guys for a year. However, they make the most sense to trade due to Buxton, Dozier, and Polanco being in the system. So I get it, just don't think it's good to trade low on guys. Maybe Polanco and Berrios instead? I'm thinking they're gonna want a pitcher in return for Bailey if they do trade him. Other than that I like the plan hate the bench in 2015 though. Hope we could get someone with a little more pop on that bench.
13. Now if we could just get Sale from the Sox and Verlander from the Tigers
14. All this said, and I started the thread, I don't think the Twins are interested. I guess you never know but I haven't seen them linked to him recently. Just wanted others opinions on if he goes that cheap. It's a far cry from the 100 million he was supposedly demanding at the beginning of FA
15. Pinto and Rosario are higher than I expected. Sano and and Stewart seem a bit lower than I would have thought, especially Sano.
16. I had heard that two but he's pitched over 30 starts the past four years and only one year did he fail to eclipse the 200 IP mark. That was 2012 when he still pitched 178 innings. So I don't think health is much of an issue at all. I suppose it's likely he was suffering through an injury in 2012 which may have lead to the poor statistics but still 3 of 4 good years is solid for a starting pitcher.
17. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/01/al-central-notes-santana-twins-tigers.html Who knows how accurate this is but according to Bob Dutton 3/40 is what Santana is likely to get after seeing the Garza contract. Would it be worth the Twins to explore a 3/40 deal for Santana and plan to trade Correia. Even if all you get is your money back for Correia who cares? Nolasco, Santana, Hughes, Pelfrey, Gibson/Deduno/Worley/Diamond wouldn't look too bad huh? Looking back at Santana, he's been incredibly good and reliable the 3 of the last 4 years. In 2012 his HR Rate was almost double his career rate. Other than that he's had a solid ERA every year, pitched over 200 innings and made a minimum of 30 starts. Not sure why his HR spiked in 2012 but who cares. Maybe Dutton is way off base though too. Santana doesn't have the injury history but does come with the draft pick compensation and has that one bad year out of the last four. I think he'd be worth the risk. Nolasco/Santana would be a decent 1-2 to run out there the next couple years while waiting for Meyer and Gibson to develop.
18. At the right price, it's worth giving up that draft pick to grab a guy like Morales/Cruz. If they have a good year you give them a qualifying offer or trade them at the break to recoup that loss. I wish Morales had played some outfield more recently then he might be a very nice fit. Hasn't played any outfield since 2008 and then it was minimal. Cruz is the opposite wish he had some versatility and he plays primarily RF where supposedly Arcia should end up. Age and everything taken into account, I would be more for Morales than Cruz I think.
19. Kendrys costs a draft pick? Here's kind of a crazy idea. What if they went after both Kendrys and Drew. Give up the 2nd and 3rd round pick. Improve your DH/bench plus add a solid SS. Maybe I'm just getting greedy now.
20. I just saw this too over at traderumors. I really think it's gotta be Drew. I don't think Arroyo makes any sense as I gotta feel the Twins want to give Worley/Diamond/Deduno another shot. Arroyo isn't enough of an upgrade to not give those guys another shot. If either of those guys can be decent that's a cheap backend SP for us for the next 3-4 years. We don't have anyone close at SS right now and I know this argument was hashed out earlier but I don't think the value of a 2nd round pick is so high it keeps us from signing a guy like Drew. What if we're circling around on Garza now that talks with Brewers apparently hit a snag? Now that would be a sizeable enough upgrade to be worth getting rid of Correia or letting our optionless guys walk.
21. Glad the Twins weren't in on this one. That's a lot of money and time for a guy who's never pitched in MLB. Not a bad signing for a team like the Yankees but I the kind of deal that could hamstring a team like the Twins in the future.
22. Let's also hope the Twins can identify the Kielty's and trade them for the Shannon Stewarts when the time is right.
23. In regards to Santana. I've thrown him under the bus in other threads (the Stephen Drew one specifically). This peaked my interest. He's been fairly young for each level and he wouldn't be the first guy we've seen take some major strides in his later seasons. He hasn't been a flop but he may well be a useful guy. If he is a true defensive whiz, maybe he's a top of the league defensive guy with an ok hit tool. His OBP has been about .330 the past two years compared to a career .318. Maybe as he matures he gets a little better eye and improves his stealing rate as well. I still don't see him as a top ten guy but I guess there must be a decent argument for it. Career minor league OPS is about 40 points higher than Florimon and he played the levels at a younger age for what that's worth. I think we've all said if Florimon could just hit a little better he could suddenly become a valuable player. Maybe Santana is that guy. I'm a bit pessimistic on him but who knows.
24. I had to say Garza, I think he's a good fit and he doesn't cause a draft pick or prospects to pick up. However, Drew is a close 2nd for me. He'll be cheaper and shorter term deal. We don't have anyone ready to step up to play SS. At some point, we have too much veteran pitching. Had we not signed Pelfrey, I'd be all about us going after Garza. I still wouldn't complain if we signed him but I feel like you have to leave at least one spot for a guy like Worley, Deduno, Diamond, or Gibson to win.
25. I propose an 8 man rotations called the 2 by 4. Pair up your 8 starters and have them both prepare for starting. Most guys do their best work the 1st and 2nd time through the lineup right? So why not capitalize on that by planning to have your staters only go 4 or 5 innings with another starter to come on in relief and finish it up. It would be more effective if all of our starters were a little different. So you have 8 starters that pitch 4 innings every 4 or 5 days. Then you have your stud relievers in Perk/Burton/Fien to close it out. It's foolproof and you know it.
