  1. Worse team of all time? No. But this past winter wasn't the coldest I've lived through. This Twins season will be like last winter--not the worst, but rather unpleasant.
  2. Sounds like the Twins thought they had an agreement about what to print and when to print it--and it got printed "too soon".
  3. Absolutely! Retaining underperformers on the active roster because they are out-of-options runs counter to common sense as well as to spending mega-millions on free-agent pitchers whose sole purpose is to reduce the heavy-losing. Tonkin and to a lesser extent Thielbar strengthen a bullpen and will contribute to a few more wins over the season. Diamond's value is as a starter/long-relief/mop-up duty. He hasn't got "it" as a starter, and the long-relief roles have proven players already on-board.
  4. Teams have PR directors for a reason. It only makes sense that they would use all forms of the media to promote their product/brand-name.
  5. It might be that there isn't a true #5 starter--simply a set of long-relief pitchers who spot start as needed. This allows flexibility for SP selection for that "5th spot" without having to make a lenghty explanation why one guy started instead of a different guy.
  6. Jobs? Bonus checks!
  7. I call this "preparing the ground". It has been surmised that all of the millions spent on pitching won't result in a contender--so blame the players. Start with the group "competing for a job". These guys are the low-hanging fruit. I have to stop there given the moderator's note about only discussing ST.
  8. Would one good game actually change anything? Pitchers are stacking-up in the system (remember those signed this off-season?)--cut Worley loose and give a game to somebody worthy.
  9. The trade gave us the opportunity to make many posts--Worley, May and Hicks--that we wouldn't have had the chance!
  10. It seems that much of the discussion is based on settling the OF vs DEF question (excluding the merits of grammatical modifiers). The point was raised about organizational philosophy concerning DEF and pitching. But all have omitted that said philosophy was predicated on: playing in the Metrodome and the effect of the "turf"; the weather-perfect conditions, and that much of this philosopy was formed by a manager who was elevated to icon status. All three have been replaced. It seems to me that the Twins' BB philosophy needs to be adjusted for those changes--especially for play at Target Field. Slap-and-dash "hitters" could "succeed" at the 'dome--but on grass fields come crashing down. Infielders with a bit less range can succeed on grass fields because the ball travels slower--and the grass may be permitted to be a bit higher, and the "dirt" around homeplate a bit "softer" to make things easier for the infielders.
  11. Face-saving trade(s) are just about a given. There are way too many recently acquired players than can be kept--especially when the younger, up-and-comers are added to the equation.
  12. 20 pitchers and 40 total still in camp?--way too many. The projected active roster need lots of innings to be fully ready for the regular season. 15 and 30 is far more appropriate. I predict another slow start because of this "indecision".
  13. Gardenhire has stated: "I want players 'won before'." He has, over time, shown preference for veteran players over rookies. Gibson, hasn't "won before", hasn't even proved himself successful for a full season at the majors--so it is easy for me to understand Gardenhire's comment about Deduno, and silence with respect to Gibson. I fully expect Gibson to start this season in Rochester.
  14. I remember all of the posts last year exclaiming the need to promote Gibson to the Twins. I was skeptical but hopeful--then I watched him pitch! I'm more skeptical and less hopeful--but I would very much like to be wrong about Gibson. My point: I think the Twins held a similar view last year and again this year. Four veteran pitchers are under contract to man the five-man rotation. It is clear to me that the Twins are skeptical! If we believe that the Twins were serious about adding a fifth veteran (and not trading any of the other four) what more evidence do people need that the Twins are very skeptical of this bunch of "starting pitcher candidates"? Gardenhire has shown his preferences (bias) and no one should be surprised that Gibson isn't one of them.
  15. Wait! Does he: slide into 1B, get his uniform dirty, and in general "get after it"? Those guys don't have to hit so much.
  16. A few reasons why beginning a career as a starter is advantageous for the Twins: There was (is) a huge need for starting pitching, pitchers who succeed as SP are more valuable (to all), the Twins want RPs to get lots of Ks, but are looking for pitch-efficiency from starters (different style of pitching/type of pitcher), the Twins (through the years) have been very successful in acquiring RPs, there isn't much need to draft/develop from the low minors on. Considering how ineffective the Twins (as a team) are opposing LHP, I wouldn't give up on Melotakis yet--there likely are a lot of other teams that struggle vs guys like Melotakis. Plus, he is (so far) successful as a SP--why change now?
  17. Beginning a career as a relief pitcher before transitioning to a starter isn't unusual and can work to the player's advantage.
  18. There are several "misprints" in this article. Example: #13 slot value well has to be wrong, and #30 Forbes is listed as a P, yet discussed as a SS. There are likely more--few players are listed as if they play three positions.
  19. Sort of a non sequitur, but does anyone else find it unusual that the Twins are publicizing offers of contracts to free-agents that didn't sign with the Twins?
  20. Goodness, managers and coaches are required to make decisions without certainty. They give evreybody 1000 ABs (or whatever number Gardenhire was qouted at) and then conclude: "you're right, he can't hit".
  21. Maybe it's something to do with being "on a good-hitting club"? Or, is it "make him an offer he can refuse"?
  22. Missing the point--it's discouraged because throwing the pitch repeatedly is alledged to damage the pitcher's arm. The 'change-up' remark is a red-herring.
  23. Your own pictures show my point--the amount of the ball between the fingers. It acts like a changeup because the the velocity of the ball drops so much more than a 2-seamer (which also slows down).
  24. Revelation! The Twins are huge proponents of the "sinker"--love those ground balls--and especially low pitch-counts! Purportedly the Twins strongly discourage (ban?) the use of split-fingered fastballs, but fully endorse the 2-seam fast-ball ("sinker"). Note: the difference is how far the ball is pushed down between the fingers.
  25. Apparently "rehab" for MiL BB players doesn't have the cache` as it does for celebrities.
