  1. Let me see if I understand you correctly--the Twins should one of the few tradeable chips to obtain another 4th OF, one whose value is only for this wretched season? May I suggest spending some cash and reacquiring Joe Benson instead? Then the Twins may trade to acquire someone who might actually be part of the long term solution.
  2. Scenario I: I wish I knew more about Nolasco's contract. If he had proclaimed that he's "injury free" and completely "ready to pitch"--and if he wasn't--could his contract be voided? IDK major league contracts (or others for that matter), but if there was a possibility that it could be voided for fraud, I definately would understand why Nolasco would try to "pitch through it". If things got worse, well it is reasonable to conclude that the injury occurred after he started pitching for the Twins. Scenario II As posted earlier in this thread--this "injury" wasn't disclosed by Nolasco until after Gardenhire trashed him. How convienent. Scenario III Maybe nobody really has enough facts about Nolasco's elbow (yet) but it's clear something has to be done now. Placing Nolasco in the IR List buys time to fully ascertain "what's up"--and fix it--as well as permitting someone else to replace Nolasco in the rotation until "it's fixed". Given the article about Worley I can definately believe the Twins want to solve the "Nolasco problem" themselves. It would be a PR nightmare if this issue continued to plauge the Twins, Nolasco was traded to another team (for a bus transfer), and this other team "fixed Nolasco" and returned him to a functional major league pitcher.
  3. The Twins need a field manager on the same page as the entire front office (who also need to be on the same page!). Gardenhire is wont to remind everyone about the past success of the team (and by inference, due to him!) and leverages concessions. This entire season is one of those concessions--"...guys who have won before...". The AS break will provide ample time for reflection and hopefully plan a new course--and with a new skipper. Gardenhire can walk the plank.
  4. Many posters have alluded to the "shared management philosophy" used by the Twins--yet apparently think this is the best way to operate--I don't! I assume that long term return on invested capital will remain and that no owner wants to be bashed constantly as organizational goals. There needs to be a focus on winning consistently but living on a realistic (but flexible budget)--"this ain't NY"! I fire DSP and have the new team president hire his own management team--GM, Scouting Director, Field Manager as well as all of the support functions (Marketing, etc). One Leader who holds everyone else accountable to meet the organizational goals. Interdepartmental "horsetrading" is out. If McPhail isn't interested, I would to someone from Miami or St. Louis to head things up.
  5. Sano was "converted" to 3B and wasn't "buttah" there. Add the recent struggles of other "can't miss" Twins' rookies and engraving Sano into the line at 3B is too much. In fact, Sano might be the infield version of Arcia. Time will tell. Dry powder in storage and quality "options" at 3D are needed.
  6. The Twins need upgrades across the board. Target a specific individual? IDK any players to target. IMO, it makes sense to look for two types of players, unfortunately the same as everybody else, power hitters and starting pitching. Selecting for a specific position is overspecifyiing. I guess, this season's experiment with "guys who have won before" must run its course before facts are faced. But the development of "prospects" needs to be accelerated in order to challenge them and force them to play outside of their comfort zone. There will always be "the Hicks-es" but it is better to discover them early rather than later.
  7. Perkins will be traded--when the mass of RP drafted this June emerge as Major Leaguers--or next July/Fall 2015.
  8. I fear a continuation of the "half-in, half-out" management philosophy. This inevitably leads to a mediocre season and the FO saying "all fixed", just allow the young players to mature (while pocketing huge amounts of cash).
  9. IDK why everyone is so upset with KC--he is as was advertised--and was available to pitch almost every time it was his turn. After the 2011 season the [Twins] decided that they could lose on a much lower payroll than $110MM--so they brought out the knifes (saws and axes) and started cutting. There was a need to "plug some holes", but only with "cheap" free agents--enter KC. The problem with the pitching staff isn't KC! The problem is with poor drafting, developing, and a committement to "just good enough" in order to satisfy "management goals" and directives.
  10. There is such a thing as a "bad 1-year contract"!
  11. Of the name mentioned, Suzuki is the only one who would be perceived as "other than a salary dump" and capable of fetching a useful return. If the Twins are serious about retaining Suzuki--they need to sign him to a "suitable" contract extention before the end of July, or they had better trade him!
  12. Plouffe is not an outfielder. Leave him at 3B--Sano isn't a guaranteed success there! Santana doesn't belong in CF--there has been enough evidence of him there. The Twins should either just hand the job over to Buxton and hold there noses until he succeeds or sign a free agent CF to play there for two years ("overpaying" if necessary). SS--play Escobar there for the rest of the year--with Santana playing everyday at Rochester (and sing Happy Trails to Florimon). Then decide what to do next season at SS between Escobar and Santana.
  13. How many people think that the Twins will be offering anybody a QO this offseason? I sure don't think so!
  14. I don't see ther Twins ever trading Plouffe--he is one of their "annointed". If/when Sano is ever promoted to play 3B, Plouffe will be retained in some capacity to serve as an insurance policy--see: CF and Hicks experience.
  15. No, he said if the Twins match [the A's 1st half winning per centage] then (by inference) they would have as good of a team as the A's. My take, Winston's toungue is pushing his cheek out.
  16. Waiting the 14 games to see what happened makes a lot of sense. Best case scenarios (because lesser cases isn't worth discussing) is 9-10 wins. But then what? Anybody worthy of being classified as an impact player will be expensive (in prospects). If all of the top ten are "off-the-block", forget about anybody any good coming over. Adding a "low cost, veteran" has been tried many times and will be judged hashly. Add no one?--is even worse. The "half-in, half-out" mentality makes no sense.
  17. Random outbursts: Middle infield depth? 19 pitchers on the 40-man roster hugely impacts "depth issues" for the position-players. Assembling a 40-man roster laden with "veterans" in the minor leagues is a burden. It sounds as if the Pino "promotion" was never to be anything more than temporary. I hope the FO sends him a card about "Minnesota Nice" (knowing you). True, Polanco was in Class A, but his previous years performances warranted a higher level of play. Same for Santana--he should have either started the season with the Twins or have been promoted shortly after the start--but... .
  18. Is this like a "sponsor's exemption" used in golf tournaments?
  19. I suspect that a significant part of "the roster problem" is caused by too many pitchers on the roster. The desire to have "lots of arms" for both starters and relievers is a big constraint. To be sure it is frustrating to place trust in players whose performance doesn't meet expectations, but sometimes a team just has to grin and bear it. It is a 40-man roster, a team can't be 3-deep at every position, there isn't enough spots. We have been prompted that there is "a mandate" to not lose 90+ games this season, but that seems like the tail wagging-the-dog. The real need is developing players and assembling a team that can consistently win 90+ a season.
  20. Apparently not Carew. LEN3 was published today in the Tribune (www.startribune.com/sports) that there were four previos Twins promoted from Class A Jim Manning '62, Butch Wynegar '76, Kent Hrbek '81, and Jim Eisenreich '82.
  21. AAA isn't a solution. Arcia must solve this problem himself. Bench him--and leave him there (except for pinch-hitting and spot duty (resting a starter for a game) until his replacement proves unworthy or Willingham leaves. Competition for a regular job reopens next Spring training.
  22. The only reason to trade Hughes is if he said he would never sign another contract with the Twins. Trading Dozier would also be an act of foolishness. The twins just lost three games they should have won because...they can't hit! Dozier is one of the few who can actually hit a HR (and play some defense). Trade Suzuki? Who will play catcher? Pinto is barely adequate as a backup catcher. The minor league catchers? puhlease! I believe this season was built around the premise of veteran ballplayers, especially those who have "won before". The Twins need to finish this 'tack" until they are satisfied that a major rebuild is required.
  23. This is called "half-in, half-out", and yes, I agree with you that this course is the most likely to happen.
  24. 1. Given tonight's result I think we should mute criticism of Correira for awhile. 2. Gardenhire statement about Rochester throws a lot of cold water on all of those posts concerning "...learning to hit (or pitch) at Rochester." The competition level is deemed "too far apart" to verify readiness for MLB. 3. There is more than just results in the decision to promote players to the Twins. No clarification was given about said decision process. 4. Trevor May's season (to date) indicates that though Worley failed for the Twins, the book on the Revere trade "isn't closed yet".
  25. Please respond to the statement I made when you respond: The outcome of the Revere trade is not clear. I never said it was the Twins' plan for Worley to stink (in fact I believe they thought he would be a bit of a success). A few more wins by Worley and it is likely that: the Twins hang-on to Worley; the fall a slot or two in the Rule 4 draft and Stewart and Gordon are selected before the Twins can select either of the; and the team still stinks--but the FO clings to the fantasy that things are on the right track. My point: More time is required to complete the assessment of the Revere trade.
