  1. Because it includes things the catcher didn't actually do. And because of that is will overrate and underrate some guys. Suzuki is actually affected pretty significantly if you only count the guys he threw out. I can't go through the whole list, but every guy below Suzuki in that top 40 of active CS% has actually thrown out a higher percentage of base stealers than him.
  2. Don't use caught stealing percentage as a statistic for catchers. That also includes plays where the pitcher essentially picks off the runner and gets him out advancing to the next base. Only 12 of Suzuki's 21 caught stealings this season were actually Suzuki throwing the runner out.
  3. I don't see any evidence he ever had a concussion with the Twins. Plenty of other body parts injured but none involving his head. I don't think we can count his as Twins bad luck.
  4. Koskie wasn't a Twin when he had his concussion was he? I think he was with Milwaukee.
  5. He could not have made a better argument AGAINST his own position. When you have to reach to depths like that to make a parallel, it shows just how absurd the notion that these things exist elsewhere. The unwritten rules are not just common decency and respect, they go WAY beyond that. All he could come up with was extreme examples that better illustrate how absurd baseball is. I'm part entertained, part frightened at the notion that it is only hockey's unwritten rules that keep players from slashing each other's throats with skate blades.
  6. I always like how the Twins like to say a player needs to be more consistent when they really mean he has to be better. I think Correia has been pretty consistent this year. If he got more consistent, he'd probably have an ERA around 8 or so.
  7. It seems to have been overlooked with the rest of the Twins roster turmoil, but Kubel's slugging pct over the last 23 games .265 with a .574 OPS. I think there should be more concern about Kubel than just overworking him.
  8. I'm late to the thread but can you really count opening day as being at .500? Sure, you've won the same number of games as you've lost but your winning percentage isn't .500 either.
  9. My reason for splitting Kirby's playoff series in half is to show that his clutchness and heroics almost all happened after the point where Joe Mauer's teams were already eliminated. He's not a playoff hero without the rest of his team winning games when he stunk. Kirby hit .167 through the first five games of the 1991 World Series. How "clutch" is he considered if the Twins had lost in five games? That's not to say that Mauer would've had big hits had he seen a game 7 or even a game 4. He's just never had his team help him out like Puckett did.
  10. Post-season heroics are enough for most people to say Puckett easily tops Mauer. But he was a cold starter in playoffs series. If the rest of his team had performed in the post-season like Mauer's Twins did I think Puckett is looked at differently. In games 1 through 4 of all his playoff series, Puckett hit .227/.278/.424 with 1 HR and 7 RBI. Over games 5 through 7, he hit .457/.500/.714. Mauer never got a chance to hit in games 5 through 7.
  11. I get why Morneau wanted an extension but I don't know why he'd expect the Twins to actually consider it. Sure, he would've gladly accepted $11+ million the Twins would've had to pay him for next season and even another $9+ million for 2015 but he shouldn't be upset that the Twins didn't even want to talk about it.
  12. I don't think a reasonable extension is actually possible right now. They have to let him become a free agent to pay him significantly less than he's getting now.
  13. They're closer than you think. For 2006 and 2007, among qualified starters, Ramon Ortiz ranked 46th and 40th respectively in NL ERA. For 2011, Kevin Correia didn't quite have enough innings to qualify for the leaderboard, but if his 4.79 ERA would've ranked 46th. In 2012, he was 40th overall. That is actually a remarkable coincidence. Ortiz's ERA+ in the two years prior to joining the Twins: 78. Correia's ERA+ in the two years prior to joining the Twins: 83.
  14. The only one that really stands out to me is right field. You must be expecting bad things from Parmelee if you have him being worse than Francoeur.
  15. Why do declining offensive numbers make a Triple Crown more impressive? No matter what the offensive environment is, someone still has to lead the league in BA, HRs and RBIs. The Angels actually won more games than the Tigers. I have a tough time giving Cabrera extra credit for how bad his division is.
