  1. Hughes worked out fine, for almost 2/3 of his original contract. (Don't let the extension fool you into thinking the original contract was bad.) Nolasco didn't quite work out, of course, but even there he has recovered to post a 90 ERA+ and eat 180-200 IP a year over the last half of his contract. That's what Ervin was doing the year before we signed him. I'm not saying trade him for just anything, but Ervin isn't entirely irreplaceable. In fact, I suspect he is replaceable enough that we won't get offered much for him in trade.
  2. Melville's stat line looks particularly good for this game, but keep in mind Toledo has the worst offense by far in the IL. (Also they are the oldest offense by far -- good job, Tigers!)
  3. It took Romero 94 pitches to get through those 5 innings. I am pretty sure he was done for the night regardless of any rain delay.
  4. Maybe Colon needs more than one spot?
  5. From May: "Johan Santana Isn't Retired Yet" http://scout.com/mlb/rumors/Article/Johan-Santana-Isnt-Retired-Yet-74907243
  6. I think the 20-30 names thing is overblown -- Baxendale? But there are definitely a couple that should warrant 40-man protection this winter, namely Curtiss and I suppose Reed.
  7. I don't think revocable trade waivers is necessarily a good barometer for value. If teams knew the Twins asking price was high, they were better off not claiming him last year and hoping circumstances changed. (Come to think of it, I wouldn't be so confident that Ervin will get claimed this year. I would bet so, but it could depend on what the Twins are asking/signaling and how the market/standings shake out in the meantime.)
  8. BJ Garbe had pretty good stats in his debut pro season too. Which suggests there are probably still some questions about Lewis beyond his SS arm. But so far, so good.
  9. Now that's "Grey" with an "e"! And don't make an offer that's just putting Baby in a corner.
  10. Yeah, seeing this thread title reappear after the Twins-Dodgers series felt like some kind of cruel joke.
  11. The Mets don't have a full-time outfield spot for Conforto right now, if that's what he meant. Of course, Granderson and Bruce are pending FA, although I'm guessing the Mets would rather target a real CF addition, Conforto is not a CF long-term.
  12. What do you mean? Their defense was bad in the outfield? Dale Murphy was a gold glove CF, and even Ibanez wasn't a liability by defensive metrics until he was 35 years old. Willingham wasn't a disaster either in his younger days, it was enough for a solid bat to overcome.
  13. Not that I would compare Garver with these guys, but: Dale Murphy Raul Ibanez Jayson Werth Wil Myers Josh Willingham http://m.mlb.com/news/article/92665530/many-converted-catchers-find-success-at-new-positions/
  14. Has anyone noted yet that the team is 0-3 since DFA'ing Breslow?
  15. Or a call-up (Curtiss, Reed, Slegers, even Rucinski, Tonkin 2.0, etc.). Eventually Perkins could need a spot again, but that's probably a few weeks away...
  16. That's the possibility mentioned over at MLBTR: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/twins-outright-anthony-recker.html I guess Recker will have up to 3 days to decide: http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3530
  17. I'm not sure if that means his trade value is higher. He's due less money, so there's less risk to claiming him, but that doesn't necessarily mean a team will give up more talent in trade (at least not meaningfully so). His peripherals have gotten worse this year and he's a year older; in the short-term, he also seems to be in a slump where he was not last last season. I'd guess it's about a wash. Whatever he gains for having less risk in cash, he loses for being a bit more suspect in performance.
  18. Yeah, Breslow or any minor league signing is fine, in theory. It's pretty clear that Breslow never should have even made the roster, though (even when he got acceptable results the first couple months, the team never really wavered from keeping him in a low-leverage short reliever role, which rendered his rostering pointless). The Twins relief prospects had already proven themselves particularly fragile and volatile the past couple of years, though, so I do count that as a demerit against the new FO if they were counting on something else from that group.
  19. In addition to Holland, Cahill was a cheap signee last offseason, and Neshek was acquired very cheaply in trade. I would have even accepted a Sergio Romo signing last winter, even though he struggled and has already been dumped by the Giants. It would have been some kind of attempt to push toward contention in 2017 or at least flipping an asset, without sacrificing the future. Instead it seems like we simply put the vehicle into neutral while we sifted through the last front office's old napkins in the glove compartment...
  20. I'm not passing any final judgement on the FO, of course, and I certainly am not co-signing on to any statement of Dave's. But I do think we are in a position right now that highlights some of the FO criticism so far. We made very few additions/changes last winter, and now we are in a position where we're not quite good enough to compete AND we don't have any new assets to cash in. The former is understandable -- we lost 103 games, we were never particularly likely to compete down the stretch in 2017 -- but the latter is puzzling. Why bother with Breslow and Belisle? They were half-measures (at best), the kind of thing the old FO would trot out somewhat aimlessly. Obviously it's still early in the game for them, we'll know a whole lot more by next spring, but it's hard to look at 2017 and not see some opportunity wasted.
  21. Plenty of people have named Holland, and not just in hindsight. You just choose not to accept it for some reason ($7 mil was clearly not too much risk for this team, given our pen construction, our budget, his performance history, and recent returns on high end relievers, IMO).
  22. I'm sure the poster is referring to going underslot with the top pick, and going overslot later. But we didn't go underslot on Lewis nearly as much as the Astros did on Correa, and ultimately we didn't even need the Lewis savings to sign Enlow. And the underslot/overslot thing by itself isn't particularly unique or special anymore, what matters is what players you get and how you develop them, and obviously much remains to be seen in that regard.
  23. Sure, but I doubt a high-end prospect is on the table, and I wouldn't want to close the door on other avenues to value. Hanging on to Santana isn't going to net you a high-end prospect either. If Santana's age and peripherals catch up to him, this might be our last best chance to cash him in. If the rest of our team takes another step forward in 2018, this might be our last chance to be sellers for awhile too. I'd be exploring a lot of deals right now.
  24. Really? Just looking at the Yankees list, I can make a reasonably compelling package of 3 prospects without meeting those conditions.
  25. Sure, you had some flexibility. I guess I was thinking more. I'm not really looking top 50 + top 100 as a baseline, and I'm wondering if there isn't a package of 3-4 guys that might not meet those conditions but still be worthwhile. (Thinking along the lines of lower level prospects, and restocking our MLB SP through FA this winter.)
