  1. Deduno to the rotation, Pelfrey to the bullpen. NOW!
  2. Kiss of death? The Strib offered this factoid: "The last Twins pitcher to win each of his first three starts as a member of the opening day rotation was Livan Hernandez in 2008."
  3. How about being the Twins sole representative at the 2014 All Star Game?
  4. Bad news = 10 strikeouts in 30 at-bats. Good news = On Sunday, Florimon drilled two line shots to rightfield--and directly into Norichika Aoki's glove. Maybe he's starting to find himself. After 578 at-bats, Florimon has a career slash of .211/273/.310. Acceptable, for me, would be somewhere between .225 and .240 for a batting average, and around .300 OBP. Add 15 homers and 35 stolen bases, with stellar defense, and we're talking "ideal." I REALLY like Pedro. He's taking walks, getting on base. Eight more hits and he's batting .250. It's SO early, but if he's still below the Mendoza line in June, something will have to happen...
  5. The Mitch Garver story keeps building... .784 SLG; 1.012 OPS Oh my!
  6. Yep, a late bloomer. It's interesting to see some of the infielders ahead of Carroll in the Expos organization. Jose Vidro; Orlando Cabrera, etc... Here's a link to Carroll: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/carroja01.shtml If Beresford is also a late bloomer, via the Australian leagues, he could be an option. I like his .363 OBP last season. He doesn't walk much (30 BB in 2013; 35 in 2012) but doesn't strike out either (51 k's in 2013; 53 in 2012). Dozier, on the other hand, struck out 120 times last year. The options at middle infield will expand in about 40 games when Rosario joins Nunez, Santana, Dozier, Florimon, and Escobar. If Beresford continues to rake (.436/.486/.531 in 9 games) he should be added to the mix.
  7. Would you rather have a 24 year old Jamey Carroll, or a Pedro Florimon?
  8. Looking ahead at the schedule, I think the Twins drop below .500 against Toronto, especially with this matchup looming, per Joe Morgan of MLB.com: "The Blue Jays, who homered three times in Sunday's win, have hit 15 home runs against Hughes in 116 2/3 innings. No team in the Majors has given out more souvenir baseballs in the outfield seats at Hughes's expense than Toronto. "http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2014_04_15_tormlb_minmlb_1&mode=preview&partnerId=LR_preview But alas, the punchless Royals return to the schedule. So, as of 4/14/14, the Twins are 6-6 After the Jays leave, the Twins are 7-8 After the Twins leave KC they are 9-9 on 4/20. Then its off to Tampa Bay, home against Detroit, and home against the LA Dodgers to end the month. After that brutal stretch, they will not be over .500 until sometime in 2015. So, yeah, I'm betting the under.
  9. A question from the cheap seats: I've seen James Beresford play a few times. Not enough to know what his upside is--especially at shortstop. He played only 4 games at short in 2013, but 60 games in 2012. He's hit at every level, and seems a better leadoff option than anyone on the 25 man roster. He's also 2 1/2 years younger than Nunez. Here's Beresford's #'s http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=beresf001jam Any chance he gets called up? Gets another shot at the six hole?
  10. Great article. Thanks for the local steam.
  11. If one looks around the Twins' 25-man roster, there aren't many options right now for a leadoff hitter. Who has the speed and plate discipline that Dozier has? No. I'm not saying that he's a GOOD leadoff hitter. He can be good. He shows more potential than anyone on the roster right now. Mastroianni hasn't shown it. Hicks could. In spite of a .189 BA, Hicks' OBP is .326. But Gardy wants to protect him. In the minors, James Beresford may be an option. Beresford lacks the prospect status of a Rosario, but he's hit at every level. He has modest speed (55 SB/45 CS in 8 minor-league seasons), but was .298/.355/.343 at Rochester last year, and has been lights out so for in 2014 with a slash of .500/.548/.607 over eight games. Beresford's minor league numbers are comparable to Eduardo Nunez' offensive output. I'd like to know more about how they compare on defense. Nunez is also 2 1/2 years older.
  12. Lineouts: Dozier 1; Mauer 2; Plouffe 1; Suzuki 2; Florimon 2 = 8, by my count.
  13. And Royals fielding. Six unearned runs in the 2nd. Ouch.
  14. We can't send Hicks with a six run lead, can we? Please?
  15. I'm cheering for good at-bats, Hicks & Florimon. Wanna see these guys with .300+ OBP.
  16. He looked like he was milking a cow, all hunched over the ball in the rightfield corner.
  17. Somewhere, Ron Gardenhire is saying, "Way to go, Hicksie!"
  18. Santana played five games at second last year, and 32 games at the keystone in 2012. Perhaps I'm the "st****" one for not being more clear--Santana will get his cuts at short. But as the Twins consider replacing/platooning Eduardo Nunez with Florimon, they will want to see what Nunez can do at Rochester. I also think it's inane (better than the S-word) to ink Santana in as the shortstop of the future without considering secondary options--no pun intended. There was a time when Dozier was the shortstop of the future too. Look how that one turned out. Maybe it was st**** to move him to second...
  19. Danny Santana may be trying out 2b at Rochester now that Eduardo Nunez is at AAA (he made his debut with the Red Wings at 3b). The Eddie Rosario experiment at 2b is postponed, but not necessarily cancelled. The Twins have lots of options regarding Dozier's service time--explained earlier in the thread. Let's see how this plays out over this summer. Maybe Dozier earns a long-term contract next spring? Maybe not.
  20. Great writing, Parker. Indeed, at 31 you can dress yourself, cook, clean, and write like hell. Holy Pope!!
  21. Intrigued? Four homers and three doubles in 25 at bats? Last year he hit two homers & 15 doubles in 202 at bats. I'm intrigued.
  22. Taylor Rogers showed some progress in his second start of the year as the New Britain Rock Cats fell to the Portland Sea Dogs, 11-2, at Hadlock Field. Progress. Progress looks like a ERA that drops from 15.75 to 13.5. Progress looks like seven strikeouts over four innings. Progress looks like only one walk over his first two starts, totaling eight innings. Progress is avoiding the long ball. Rogers surrendered two big flies in his first start--none over the Maine Monster--perhaps reverting back to the pattern he displayed in the Florida State League, where he gave up only 5 homers over 130.2 innings. The minor leagues is all about learning how to pitch, and not just throw. So here's to a steep learning curve in the Class AA Eastern League, Taylor. Here's to progress...
