  1. EDITED due to it just not being worth it...
  2. I'm not over-reading at all. The full quote starts by him saying the TEAM defense hasn't been all that bad...then he points out the middle defense as the good part...then he comes back and says 'So it's not been a defensive issue here as much as it has not being able to score much.' He's NOT just talking about the defense up the middle. And, sorry, but before the season started he talked about how happy he was with the rotation and said he had good hopes for it...and it crashed and burned. And yet it's not the most disappointing aspect? He's not pointing out the offense because he made a big deal about how he'd significantly improve the starting pitching and it was a massive FAIL, so of course he can't point to that as the most disappointing part.
  3. So status quo and in a couple years we can keep the Twins way going by promoting from within...SWEET!
  4. So because we expected our starting pitching to be the worst in baseball by far that makes it less disappointing? I guess that's one way to look at it. And our defense has been very bad. A couple bright spots doesn't negate the overall TEAM performance.
  5. Pretty much the whole Q&A made me sick to my stomach.
  6. He says starting pitching was not the most disappointing aspect of this year, that offense was. Well, the rotation was only the worst in baseball by a good margin when looking at the whole picture.
  7. He points to 'positives' such as Pelfrey and Correia. Says our defense wasn't bad. 'So it's not been a defensive issue here as much as it has not being able to score much'. Baseball Prospectus has us 29th in defensive efficiency. Exclusive Q&A with Twins GM Terry Ryan
  8. With the rotation Ryan put together, there was no way in the world we could achieve .500. The loss of our #1 and #2 hitters didn't help. Ryan is trying to sell the golden gate bridge...and some are trying to buy it. I just hope Ryan doesn't truly believe they had a shot at .500.
  9. Francona managed the Red Sox to two W Series championships and was fired/not renewed after his team ONLY won 90 games in the toughest division in baseball. In his eight seasons with them they won 90 or more games six times (again, in the toughest division in baseball). They won 95 or more games five times under him (once again, toughest division in baseball) Talk about a scapegoat.
  10. Why would Giolito be a buy low candidate? He's doing very well in the minors and was a first rounder.
  11. You mean, after we make the guy a qualifying offer of about 14M?
  12. Yeah, obviously we don't agree. If any team can still be so fiercely affected by decisions made on two players who haven't been on the team for 6 seasons, then that team wasn't put together well overall to begin with. They were handled poorly sure, and it negatively affected us, but those bad decisions end up being scapegoat much like how some want to blame everything on Smith. So I'll stick to saying it's a ridiculous idea that we are in such bad shape now because of how we handled Hunter and Santana back in 2007. We have had institutional failure for years on this team. That is why we are where we are.
  13. It matters because last offseason he said he'd do everything he could to significantly improve the starting pitching. So, of course, he's going to focus more on the offense with his comments.
  14. Whichever scenario...whether it's not signing those two, not signing one and trading the other, or whatever different scenario wants to be thrown out, it still comes down to the fact that it's ridiculous to blame where we are now because of what we did or didn't do with only two players six seasons ago.
  15. So Ryan not being able to sign these TWO players SIX seasons ago is what's hurting this team?
  16. It should...but it won't.
  17. Our starting pitching is by far the worst in baseball. There is no way around it.
  18. Do people actually expect those words to come out of his mouth?
  19. If Ryan thinks the pitching has been better than the ERA stat thinks he should look at the BAA, the QS, the Ks, and the IP for the starters and realize he's delusional and/or fooling no one with that kind of comment.
  20. When/if all the 'old school' stuff fades out of baseball we'll see change, until then, these players are taught things that are 'right' in baseball to do and 'wrong' in baseball to do. It's been ingrained in them for years and years. I'm not saying it's right, but when your bosses tell you all this stuff over and over, well, you work for them. Twins coaches are telling Sano it's wrong to pimp a HR and they punish him for doing so. Players have been taught not to show up opposing members and they laid out what that entails. I'm all for change, but it needs to change throughout the game and starting at the lowest levels.
  21. If you saw the whole plate appearance, he swings wildly at the first pitch, and then stares down Maholm as he walks back into the batter's box and then he hits the HR...but it's not about the slight time he took admiring the HR, it's about how he's yelling at Maholm all around the bases. Gomez was upset about being hit in the leg 3 months ago...and there was no reason to believe it was on purpose. Is Gomez going to do that every time he gets hit by a pitch? True, McCann shouldn't have stood where he did and all that...absolutely...but those thinking Gomez has no fault on this...yeah, I don't get that.
  22. both of them came into this season recovering from injuries...just like Pelfrey and the long shot Harden (though not as severe as Pelfrey and Harden)
  23. I'm still trying to figure out how Maholm provoked Gomez yesterday, or at all. Unless, of course, every time a pitcher hits someone that is provoking the batter. Not only that, Maholm hit him in June and there was nothing then to suggest Maholm did it on purpose and he didn't stare Gomez down or anything. He just hit him.
