  1. Polanco hasn't played in 5-6 days either, so he'll have to be healthy too. I'd be surprised if they brought up both Polanco and Santana. I think Buxton will be up before September. Vargas should be up. I still think Kepler will come up. I don't think Berrios comes up.
  2. I like the idea of having a decent pinch hitter... If I'd call up Vargas now, it'd be at the expense of a reliever. I'd keep Robinson around for pinch running/defense in the outfield. Buxton would be a bigger impact than Vargas since Buxton would immediately come up and start. I fully expect Buxton to be up 19 days after he was optioned (or less)
  3. Byron Buxton has been named the International League's Hitter of the Week:
  4. The Quest for 73!!! As for this thread, the one number in which I will be exceedingly happy is when they hit 73 wins!! I believe that will make the previous four years N/A.
  5. Minnesota Twins Minor League Player of the Week: Week 1: Tyler Duffey, Chattanooga Lookouts Week 2: Stephen Gonsalves, Cedar Rapids Kernels Week 3: Byron Buxton, Chattanooga Lookouts Week 4: Trey Vavra, Cedar Rapids Lookouts Week 5: Miguel Sano, Chattanooga Lookouts Week 6: Max Kepler, Chattanooga Lookouts Week 7: Aaron Slegers, Ft. Myers Miracle Week 8: Brandon Peterson, Ft. Myers Miracle Week 9: David Hurlbut, Chattanooga Lookouts Week 10: Alex Wimmers, Chattanooga Lookouts Week 11: Engelb Vielma, Ft. Myers Miracle Week 12: AJ Achter, Rochester Red Wings Week 13: Oswaldo Arcia, Rochester Red Wings Week 14: Mat Batts, Ft. Myers Miracle Week 15: Felix Jorge, Cedar Rapids Kernels Week 16: Chris Paul, Elizabethton Twins Week 17: Kennys Vargas, Rochester Red Wings Triple-A Rochester first baseman/designated hitter Kennys Vargas is the Twins minor league Player of the Week...Vargas played in eight games for the Red Wings, hitting .391 (9-for-23) with two doubles, one home run, eight RBI, nine walks and a .563 on-base percentage...Vargas has hit .274 (96-for-350) with 11 doubles, 15 home runs and 50 RBI in 105 games this season at three levels (Minnesota, Rochester and Chattanooga).
  6. I'll try to explain, but I don't think I can do it without being a little wordy. In December, these types of players would be eligible for the MLB Rule 5 (unless protected on MLB 40 man roster): Players signed in 2012 out of college (or 19+)Players signed in 2011 who were less than 19 when they signed. For the AAA Rule 5, they have to be protected on the AAA roster: Players signed in 2013 out of college (or 19+)Players signed in 2012 who were less than 19 when they signed. And then the same pattern for AA. Using an example... Adam Brett Walker needs to be added to the Twins 40 man roster, so he could be lost in the MLB Rule 5 draft if they don't protect him. He was a 3rd round pick in 2012 out of college. If he's not protected on the 40 man roster, he's certainly going to be protected on the AAA roster. In fact, he had to be protected on the AAA roster last year. The minor league rosters generally aren't made public... I've never seen them, at least.
  7. I've read a couple of places about Duffey's curveball... It's always been his pitch. He normally has really good control, and even on Saturday night there were several times when he was overthrowing. He can be a solid MLB starter. I think hi's about the same place that Trevor May was when he was called up a year ago. Will he be a starter in the long-term? I don't know. The fact that there are Hughes, Santana, Gibson, maybe Nolasco, possibly Milone, May, Berrios around as well may push him to the bullpen with the Twins...
  8. Tweeted this last night: Nick Gordon is 2-4 with a double so far tonight. In his 67 games since 5/22, he's hitting .307!
  9. Peterson didn't go last year. Zack Jones and Jake Reed went. Someone who would know told me that Burdi said he didn't need the AFL last year, so I don't know if he'll go this year. He should. 40 man roster decisions - I don't think that's really something that is considered there, unless a player gets hurt or really tears it up there. They likely already know. The AFL is for AA and AAA players, although they can have up to two guys from A-Ball too. They can have up to 7 players. My guesses, and they're just guesses because there is some strategy, but they also fill a roster with five other teams: Stuart Turner, Adam Brett Walker, Levi Michael, Jake Reed, Nick Burdi, Aaron Slegers and Corey Williams.
  10. I appreciate that. Cody, Jeremy, Steve, Eric and myself really enjoy doing them. (Though I guess I shouldn't put words in others' mouths.)
  11. Congratulations to Tyler Duffey on his first major league win on Saturday night. The right-hander, who is a strong candidate for Twins Daily Minor League Starting Pitcher of the Year, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with six shutout innings. 13. Not saying it was likely to continue, but he pitched fine. A very solid minor league signing.
  14. Brandon gave me a sneak peak/preview of the next episode and it is awesome! You'll definitely want to listen to that one. I listed to Episode 4 yesterday and it is tremendous... I definitely enjoyed hearing the pitcher/catcher discussion with Cole. He wasn't afraid to tell you who his favorite catcher was (And wasn't) to work with.
  15. Duffey may end up in the bullpen. It might even be likely based on other options, but tonight's start isn't going to be make or break for him.
  16. The results were there in Ft. Myers, but also the coaches, manager, Twins front office people, etc., were watching and likely saw what they needed. It was clear that he had to be sent down, and he did what he needed to do. As for the Twins not being forthcoming, what should they say? Has anyone even asked them? I don't think they need to say anything, and other teams wouldn't either, unless asked.
  17. David Hurlbut promoted to Rochester and will start on Sunday. He just told me that he isn't sure exactly how long he'll be up there, but "always good to get promotions."
  18. 6 starts ago, he did the same thing. Well, 5 shutout innings and then didn't get an out in the 6th. Without those two innings, his ERA would be amazing!
  19. Those numbers are remarkably similar. When I did the story on Thorpe a month or so ago, I asked about Wells. They are rooming at the complex in Ft. Myers. He is actually 6-0 and 185 now... and yes, left-handed.
  20. Tim Shibuya also going to Rochester. Corey Williams also going to Chattanooga. Southern League transactions page says Matt Summers was placed on the Restricted List.
  21. Throughout the night, this report was updated live. As Twins affiliates scored or innings passed or pitchers did something, it was updated. I hope you enjoy this format. 23. The Win-Loss record has nothing to do with Sano or any individual player. Obviously it takes more than one player for a team to win on any given day or over any period of time. Also, check the Walk:Strikeout rates of the Santana, Vargas and Arcia trio compared to Sano. Much better knowledge of the strike zone. Obviously, he'll have to make a bunch of adjustments over time.
  24. Wayyyyy too soon togive up on Santana. Maybe if he stinks for the first 6 weeks next year, we can worry. The Rockies, however, wouldn't do it. The reason they dealt Tulowitzki was for salary relief and prospects, not for another long-term deal on a veteran.
  25. No way... he'll be back in September - if healthy. Honestly, he takes way too much grief from many Twins fans. He's struggled his last two outings allowing inherited runners to score, and he doesn't fit the profile of what we want in a reliever, but he's been pretty solid all year, especially during that incredible early-season run. I think it's important to say that, for the most part, he's gotten the job done for the Twins this year. Turned out to be a very quality signing.
