    So they could move Joe Webb to wideout? Don't ask me to explain the Vikings logic with QBs because I have no idea. I just get the impression they will sink or swim with Ponder. I predict they will sink hard.

    We will never know. But the FA philosophy many espouse on this board is, wait till you're competitive and then spend big on FAs. Well, both the Os and Pirates are competitive. If they were to employ that strategy, then it stands to reason that they would be terrific matches with a rebuilding club who has lots of cash. Maybe this is a little too Hollywood or farfetched, but I keep thinking of that scene in Moneyball, where Beane is desperate for cash so he trades Carlos Pena for Ted Lilly and 600,000 cash. Obviously neither the Os or the PIrates are as strapped for cash as the early 00s Athletics, but we do have clear evidence that Huntington was under a spending limit (albeit a flexible one). So you can say "a 1month rental of a declining guy like Morneau isn't going to return a top prospect no matter what." Well, I ask again, what would Morneau, + 10 million cash get you? Maybe Huntington or Dan Duquette start outbidding each other for that. Maybe the As or Rays or Yankees want a piece of that action too.

    MBL and NPB have already started negotiations that would cap posting fees for players. The resuilt of this would be that when high profile arms like Tanaka post, multiple teams can win the right to compete with each other over salary (posting fees don't count against the luxury tax, salaries do). We are all well aware that TR doesn't like to outbid other teams on FAs. So if Tanaka elects to post this winter (every indication is that he will) then it could be his only chance to get exclusive bargaining rights with one of these aces from Japan. They need to make that happen. They need to win Tanaka's posting auction.

    Prospect busts hurt just as badly as FA busts. And, like with the draft, the higher you draft (the more money you spend) lesser are your odds of a given guy busting.

    This concussion thing really gives me the heeby jeebies. The general trend seems to be, that impacts that we used to think of as "getting your bell rung" are fullblown concussions. Foul tips are now included in that group. So its less a question of, *will* Mauer get another concussion, and more a question of A. How many has he already gotten? and B. *When* will the next one hit? It makes no sense to me to expose a huge investment like Mauer until they improve the masks and get these concussions under control. Until then, I'd be fine with cheap aging vets and investing elsewhere (pitching) or rolling the dice with Pinto or Herrmann.

    I don't see the point to catching Mauer if the alternative at 1B is Parmelee/Colabello again. That is just as big a tradeoff offensively, maybe more when you factor in the extra 10-15 games Mauer would not have to sit.

    Yes, of course it is. But, why not trade Morneau and 10m cash? Presumably at some point, you could crack into the Pirates top 10 prospects. This gets you around the spending caps and slot bonuses involved with other forms of prospect acquisition. The Pirates, a first place team, might value free agent money more than a last place team flush with cash like the TWins.

    This argument that "something is better than nothing," I'm not sold. Its like poker. You know the guy asking to color down his only $100 chip for five $20 chips? That guy is losing. I don't think baseball is a lot different. Give up 1 player and receive multiple players in return, and there is a good chance that you're only watering down your roster, and losing. More 1:1 player trades, a la Span. Bundle guys with cash if it sweetens the deal, a la Pierzynski. If you can't color up, then just keep the guy. The Twins could have offered Morneau an extension like he asked for. I'd rather play that lottery than these 24-30 year olds with no MLB track record. At the very least, it doesn't clutter your roster as much.

    After 9 days of rest, Mendonca returned to action yesterday for Elizabethton. With the bases empty to start the 7th, the Twins 17th round pick of 2013 walked the first and second runners he faced. Then allowed a single, walk, and single. He left with no outs and the bases load. In relief of Mendonca, Ryan Eades allowed a bases-clearing double to Tyler Smith, giving Mendonca an earned run for each batter he faced (5). For the year, Mendonca holds a narrow lead over Andre Martinez for team WHIP and ERA, with 2.61 and 8.49 in 23.1 IP. Martinez trails with 2.23 and 8.18 in 22.0 IP.

    IMO Hicks and Parmelee are exhibits A and B in why you value raw hitting ability over "polish" in a spec. Look at the Mariners - they built a roster out of top 100 specs who put up gawdy walk inflated OPSes in the minors. But Smoak, Saunders, Franklin, and Ackley are struggling just like Hicks and parmelee did. The only guys keeping that lineup afloat are Morales, Ibanez and Seager - the one guy who *hit* in the minors (and was left off the top 100 lists).

    Every time Willingham talks about his knee he says how much better it feels. His swing is just a little rusty, popping a lot of balls up right now. But I think there's plenty of gas left in the tank. I hope they keep him unless they get a guy they want.
