  1. CMat should have picked wildcards! edit: nm that's the tiebreaker. Congrats to Ashbury
  2. Chitown have you ever oggled at Brian Dozier? Apart from the HR's and webgems I mean.
  3. Arcia was tied with Jose Bautista for 3rd in ISO in the 2nd half behind only Stanton and Kemp. Still struck out over 30% of the time. If he can improve the BB and K rate then you're talking about Justin Upton or Chris Carter as comps. I would call that a win for sure.
  4. Do we know for a fact that the Pirates' FO is going deeper with analytics? It could be that Jack Goin's analytics are just as insightful, only that he's either failed to effectively communicate to Gardy and the field staff, or the field staff hasn't been as receptive to him as Clint Hurdle and his coaches have been to Dan Fox's analytics. It looks to me like the Pirates knew they had a receptive manager but wanted to be able to investigate hypotheses on the fly in order to expoit short windows of opportunity. Thus the creation of Fitzgerald's position as a traveling sabermetrician. Its that sort of eagerness to wield analytics as a tool that I want to see in the next manager, and not a fear or ignorance of it.
  5. Really interesting read. I wonder if the Twins intention in bringing in Molitor last year was to be that liason between the FO and Gardy.
  6. I remember Magglio being used as a ceiling. High batting average, good power. Arcia's minor league track record was that of a perennial .300 hitter. Funny how differently we view him now.
  7. Its also worth pointing out that part of the reason Bo Porter was canned was because of the constant push back against the analytics dept. Who knows if the implementation was botched or employed as the analytics people intended.
  8. Nobody's pretending to know who the best candidate is. We all have a lot more questions than answers. But if you believe the next manager should be able to wield analytics to give his team an advantage on the field, as I and others do, then its a little discouraging to hear one of the candidates say: "I have to admit that I'm not tremendously up to speed on the analytical side of it. I still believe in trust your eyes." That is the exact quote. Seems pretty clear to me but I admit, I could be totally wrong and Doug Mientkiewicz could actually be an analytical genius.
  9. About 1/10. But, the payoff is, basically, a first round bye, thus (almost) doubling the chances of advancing to the ALCS. I'm not sure its clear cut who the Pirates 1-2-3-4-5th best starters are.
  10. Abreu's arguably the most powerful bat on the planet right now so I don't know if that's a fair standard to weigh him against. Its more fair to compare him to Puig and Cespedes where he still falls a bit short but the gap is closer and depending on these other variables, might be a wash. Its too close to call IMO, just comparing the 3 players' stats, which is why the eval and medicals are so important.
  11. There are two variables affecting his output - the raise of the mount in 2012-2013 and Tomas' wrist injury this summer. It will be up to the Twins talent eval team to make an accurate determination what this guy's true talent is, as well as the medical staff (shudders).
  12. Darren WolfsonVerified account ‏@DarrenWolfson Told the #MNTwins have expressed interest in arranging a private workout with Cuban FA OF Yasmany Tomas. No date set yet. https://twitter.com/DarrenWolfson/status/517713050380795904
  13. The other thing with hiring a young guy, I think you have to be doubly sure he's the right choice. Because if the Twins history is any indication, he'll be here a while. I don't want to find out we hired Gardy 2.0 and then be stuck with him forever. For that reason, hiring an older guy doesn't scare me that much. Its ok to swap out managers more than twice every 30 years.
  14. From what tidbits I've been able to gather, Dougie is actually more of an old school guy than Molitor. If you listened to Reusse ask him (Mientkiewicz) about analytics, for example, Doug's response was basically "yeah we'll listen" but ultimately settled on "I believe in the eye test."
  15. How would Mientkiewicz manage with a club of slow-footed mashers? Guys like, just to pick some players at random, Kennys Vargas, Miguel Sano, Josmil Pinto, Oswaldo Arcia, (cough) Trevor Plouffe, and (cough) Joe Mauer?
  16. Anyone but Cards and Giants. I'd rather see Detroit than the Giants again
  17. Why do people assume he has managerial ambitions? He declined the job once already.
  18. They did trade for Lester at the beginning of August. Is it possible he upset the delicate clubhouse vibe? No way of knowing but it does line up timeline wise. He was one of the beer drinking, chicken munching guys in Boston during the Valentine fiasco year, IIRC.
  19. I'm sure Souhan is a standup journalist but I don't believe for a second that Sano and Buxton independently gave the same answer to the that question. Having said that I've heard enough about Molitor with respect to helping Plouffe on his footwork and Dozier with his baserunning that I would hope the new guy gives him strong consideration as a bench coach. Ditto Brunansky. Ditto Anders- I mean, just not Anderson.
  20. If batters are noticing, with accuracy, who the best framers are, then what more proof do the last framing skeptics need?
  21. Maybe the biggest benefit of getting to a 2 strike count is the hitter expands the zone for you, less framing is required. In Plouffe's case, he didn't strikeout looking but he did strikeout 7 times swinging. How many strikes did Molina steal getting to those 2 strike counts? Those would seem to have a trickle down effect.
  22. Think this kid will steal home if it gets to 2 outs?
  23. I couldn't disagree more. The Royals were holding a 1 run lead in a do or die game, the hook should be very quick. I would take Ventura's 98 mph gas out of the bullpen any day as a bridge to Herrera-Davis-Holland. It was a good call and a lousy outcome is all, IMO. That's a 1-game playoff for ya.
