  1. The bullpen is bottom half in ERA and dead last in xFIP. I don't know why you wouldn't break in RP prospects into low leverage situations either. That seems like exactly the sort of spots you would want to break guys in.
  2. Good points. With all the RPs the Twins have drafted, you would think they could do better than Stauffer & Duensing just with internal replacements.
  3. Well they are playing a doubleheader and won't have an off day for over a week. I really don't mind carrying a bunch of pitchers. One backup IF and one backup OF (and another for catcher) seems fine since we will want most everyone playing everyday. I only wish that everyone included Arcia/Vargas instead of Santana/Escobar (take your pick).
  4. Is Arcia healthy yet? The Twins will face a string of RH starters, they could use a LH bat at DH.
  5. No offense but the idea of trading for a marquee talent like Chapman seems uninspired. He is at the apex of his career (or maybe a tad past it). I much prefer targeting the NEXT great reliever. I suggested Matt Barnes of the Red Sox who was a failed starter but looks pretty good as a reliever IMHO. Someone along those lines would definitely cost less in terms of prospects and salary and maybe even work out better for the team.
  6. FWIW, Whitley's final 2015 line was a bit underwhelming for high school. .356/.487, 3 HRs 15/15 SB
  7. Question. Who is the best fastball hitter among the college shortstops? Or among the college ranks, period
  8. A report from earlier in May: http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20150513&content_id=123955952&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb 90-92 on the fastball.
  9. I highly doubt the return from Mike Pelfrey would improve the team in the near term or the short term. Plus, think about it. Who trades for rentals? Other contenders. Well if the Twins are in contention at the deadline, they're not going to want to improve another AL contender so right there the market is narrowed to NL teams, further whittling any return to at best Escobar lite (lite). But, I would love to see this team trade from their prospect pool. They have yet another top 10 pick coming, they can afford to. A prospect package for a promising young player in his 20s who is maybe pre-arb or early in arbitration would be ideal IMO.
  10. I really like this kid but have a hard time with the corner outfield part. Is there any upside with the glove at all? Any chance he could stick in Center?
  11. Only one way to find out!
  12. That article was written already, by Souhan last week, linked to in the fg piece.
  13. Agree. There are about a thousand ways this season can break. I don't yet know if this team is good bad or other but they are definitely interesting.
  14. That might explain part of the reason they've scored so many early-inning runs. Will be fun to see how they fare against more RH starters. This month they start out R-L-R-R and then I think R-R-R against the Brewers.
  15. .318/.373/.542 since original post
  16. Fangraphs article describing the gap between the Twins wins and their BaseRuns http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-traps-that-the-twins-need-to-avoid/ WARNING: negative/critical content
  17. I get that the point of BP isn't to hit home runs per se. For all I know Vargas was being coached to do one thing mechanically then doing something totally different, reverting to bad habits, etc. once BP started. Only that wasn't how it was ever phrased. It was always that he crushes the long ball in BP which would seem to be a successful result if that's how you're coaching the guy to hit all along. I admit we're short on insider info and I was encouraged by Kennys' tone when he spoke to Phil Miller about the demotion. He seemed to have some clarity about what he needed to do.
  18. I have a feeling Molitor wants speed out the DH spot and that the break-even point where he's willing to trade speed for power is very high. I'm basing this on the few balls Vargas smashed to the wall where he was either tagged out at second or forced to stand at 1B. For anyone else they would have been doubles. With Vargas' speed he is going to be 2, maybe 3 base hits away from scoring from 1B. Thus they charged him with putting more balls in the seats. So the strange part to me, in addition to the timing, is that before all of this, we heard a bunch of chatter about how Vargas needed to stop treating BP like a HR derby.
  19. I've always liked Polanco from an age/level/statistics standpoint and so has JAVIER which ranked him as having the highest chance of being a "productive" player in the Twins system based on his performance through 2013 (17.6%). I imagine that hasn't changed much based on his performance since then.
  20. Disappointing that Allard hasn't pitched. If he were in play for the top 6 that would improve the Twins position that much more. As it is he (and Aiken) would make good picks for someone later in the round, but too risky at 6. Tucker is impressive but prep bats are scary. I wish/hope the Twins are in on Fulmer too. Him or Bregman would be great. Tate looks like a reliever to me.
  21. I would make that switch. Worst case scenario he takes some lumps and is as bad as Santana who has been a major disappointment. Escobar should not be starting anywhere IMO.
