  1. Here's the thing about Aiken that scares me. What propelled his ascent last year was the increase in velocity. Shortly after the increase in velocity, his elbow gave. It seems possible then that either he reverts to pre-velocity rise Aiken, which wasn't as highly regarded, or (after rehabbing TJS), returns to dialing it up to the low-mid 90s at the risk of more elbow problems.
  2. He does have a cool name though. Actually there are a few cool names - Funkhouser, Dansby, Kolby, oh and Kirby!
  3. Well let me walk back this whole thread. Eh-herm. I was mistaken. I thought the ball hit over Hicks head yesterday hit the dirt (that was how Provus described it, I even checked double checked the radio broadcast on mlb.com). Then I turned up the volume on my own link and sure enough it appears to confirm better than any other evidence that this ball was in fact 2-3 feet from being a home run. Hicks' deke was actually a genius attempt at containing the damage in what was almost certainly an uncatchable ball. Kudos Aaron Hicks' defense. -Hammer Sigh. I'm done posting today
  4. after watching/listening again I think you may be right
  5. It landed on the dirt. That's what Provus said at the time and if you watch the replay it appears that way too. I realize the park is unusual and weather may have been a factor. I would give Hicks more leeway there except for the fact that he has struggled on balls hit over his head before. He seems, in my view, tentative about running all the way to the wall.
  6. BTW the WPA on that "double" was 12%. Tied for highest in the game with Dozier's 3rd inning home run.
  7. If the 30.6% chase rate held in MLB, that would put Walker 82nd highest among qualified batters. In a tie with Freddie Freeman, Hanley Ramirez, and Anthony Gose.
  8. Your last question is quite a bit different from the first ones. I recommend reading the KATOH primer here: http://www.hardballtimes.com/katoh-forecasting-a-hitters-major-league-performance-with-minor-league-stats/ Edit: that's not to say walk rate = OBP but is probably a decent proxy.
  9. This was also corroborated by Provus on the radio. I myself thought it hit the base of the wall but after re-watching and listening to the Twins broadcast again, it does appear to have hit the ground first.
  10. The other thing I forgot to mention about the radio broadcast is that, according to Gladden, after the play Hicks displayed visible disappointment that he did not catch the ball, which would seem to indicate Hicks himself thought it was catchable. Perhaps Chief can confirm/deny since he was at the game.
  11. I agree he has looked better since the call-up overall. I do think this ball was catchable as do Wetmore and Gladden, at least.
  12. What about this ball? Looks more like a towering fly to me that hung up a while.
  13. Sept 14, 2014 game against the Angels I am pretty sure there are at least one or two others from last summer.
  14. Wetmore also considered it a misplay http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Wetmores_5_thoughts_Boston_tags_Hughes_Dozier_pulls_another_homer060315
  15. In case you missed it, Big Papi hit a ball to dead center that Aaron Hicks misplayed. Watch it here. http://m.mlb.com/video/v143227983/minbos-ortiz-plates-pedroia-with-rbi-double/?game_pk=414415 That ball hit the bottom of the wall, right by the 379 ft. marker. I was listening to the radio at the time and Gladden described the ball as a misplay as well. Is it just me or does Aaron Hicks look lost at sea every time he touches the warning track?
  16. FYI, he's got to stay there at least 10 days. Vargas could be recalled. Otherwise we are looking at more Eds at DH.
  17. Vargas: I would love if he were recalled Pinto: Sliding pretty badly right now Arcia: DL stint is over, Twins just exercised an option on him. With those three out of the picture atm, there appears to be a window for someone like Walker. It would take a little finagling with the roster and he would definitely strikeout, but he also could put some balls in the seats which has been sorely missing from DH.
  18. I know Kepler's already on the 40 man but there is enough chaff, that should not be an issue IMO. Also do we want another singles hitter at DH? ABW is close in OPS but has the power element that I think a DH should have. And he's a decent baserunner and can sub in the OF so is just as flexible as Kepler in that respect unless you think DH should backup 1B too. Kepler would have him there I guess.
  19. 5. The dude apparently crushes righties. All 14 of his HRs this year are against righthanders, and the Twins will be facing a string of RHPs
  20. Adam Brett Walker III 1. The Twins are punting DH right now. 2. ABW's raking. He has 14 HRs and is the best hitter by OPS on the Lookouts with over 100 PAs. 3. There are 2-3 roster spots he could take (Bernier, Stauffer, etc) and he is going to have to be added to the 40 man after the year anyway for Rule 5 protection. 4. With the Arcia injury, the Vargas demotion, and the Twins plans to slow-cook Sano, this could be Walker's best/longest window.
  21. I don't know why you insist on downplaying certain innings or situations. You need to be better than .500 in tie games. You need to win a few long shot come from behind games. This is what good teams do. I'm not sure that Achter or Oliveros are upgrades either but we are well past the point of finding out.
  22. OK then, two blown leads after 6, fine. But you are cherry picking, I think you know that. The bullpen is responsible for four more losses from tie games and there are other games like the one against the Jays last week. Stauffer came in for mop up duty, the offense scored 3 and tied the game, then Stauffer gave the Jays the lead right back. He would have been on the hook for a loss were it not for the offense scoring two more runs after Molitor yanked him.
