  1. A casual observation a few weeks ago seems to indicate that merchandise sales for the Saints are through the roof. Many Saints hats / jerseys at Target Field. I'd be really curious to know what the working relationship is like between Mike Veeck and the Pohlad family / Twins organization. Veeck is certainly not a young man at this point and I'm curious what his future plans are for the Saints now that they've been brought into the MLB / MiLB fold.
  2. One of the things I don't particularly like about Reusse's rant was his casting of Rocco's style of talking to the press as somehow not telling the truth. There is no way that Rocco Baldelli is going to jump on one of these Zoom calls and start badmouthing his players, his coaches, the front office personnel, anything like that. That doesn't mean that there aren't those kinds of conversations happening, it's that they just don't happen in front of beat reporters anymore. Referencing Gleeman's comments this morning about Sid Hartman in the pressbox loudly proclaiming "This guy sucks"; it's just not something that's going to happen in an organization in 2021.
  3. All of that. Also, selling and moving to North Carolina, etc. etc. That period of time is what I consider 'the bad old days' only in second place to the North Stars picking up and moving.
  4. The Tampa Bay model is also one where they are not focused on attendance and all the 'normal' things nearly at all. Low revenue, low salary, wash, rinse, repeat. Also, if the CBA establishes a salary floor it probably removes the feasibility of that type of organizational model for good or ill.
  5. I'll tack on an observation that might trigger the downvotes... I made my first trip to Target Field at the beginning of the month; had a great time at Target Field for two games against the Rays. One loss, one win - but both pretty fun games in all honesty. I left Minneapolis on a pretty good vibe. On the way out of town, I stopped off I-35 in Lakeville at a Kwik Trip to fill up and grab a cup of coffee / snacks for kids on the road. I filled the tank and went inside to pay wearing my Twins baseball cap. This was apparently a conversation point with the Lakeville locals on a Sunday morning. Conversations went something like this: "I'm glad you're still wearing the hat - it's been a tough season." "Yeah - it's been tough, but there have been a few good moments here and there. This weekend at Target Field was pretty fun." "Oh, it will never be as fun as it was in 1991. At least we've had Vikings football to look forward to." Me:
  6. That is something of a shock. Hard to say if it’s pandemic related or some after effect of turning the entire team over when joining the minors. Anecdotally, flipping through a number of minor league games on MILB.tv it looks like it has been a rough year for minor league ticket sales. (The Iowa Cubs - my local AAA affiliate - also closed grandstand seats in the left / right outfield to sales. It looks like no one was buying, and they didn’t want to bother trying to staff those sections with ushers.)
  7. He sure went hard into gloom and doom. This situation in 2021 is nowhere near the 'bad old days' where years of last place attendance in the AL when MLB wanted to just fold the franchise. There's going to be a lot of disappointment, of course, but things are not that bad.
  8. I was going to use the U. of Minnesota football schedule as an example of what might be an improvement, but it looks like Minnesota already has future home/home schedules with North Carolina (ACC) and Colorado (Pac-12) on the schedule. Wisconsin has home/home set up with Alabama and two offsites with Notre Dame. Maybe it's only Iowa that is locked into an annual Iowa / Iowa State game and two directional schools.
  9. Agree with this - giving Big Ten teams a slot to schedule a home / home against Pac-10 and ACC teams might let us see more interesting games than the usual 2/3 non-conference directional university teams coming to town for a paycheck. I don’t know about the higher goals, but it’s also obvious that the conferences want to maintain a voice in TV contracts and revenue streams rather than be forced into whatever ESPN / ABC will offer for national games.
  10. Larnach is also adjusting to major league pitching - and as noted above he's showing the ability to change his game from pulling for power to hitting all over the field. His ability to adjust is showing a lot more than some other players on the roster.
  11. In watching this year I'm starting to think that we might never see Arraez as an everyday player - his knees were bad to begin with and now there's pretty frequent moments where his footwork is awfully wobbly. I don't know if there's an active medical issue going right now, but his career might be limited by his knees far before he loses any skill as a hitter. I actually thought at two separate moments that we saw the end of his career as he either went down in a pile in the outfield or flat on his back at the plate.
  12. Commentary that includes the Iowa Band Law = deep cut.
  13. Agree on Polanco - 2B seems to be a natural fit. The organization does need to figure out where a number of players will fit. There's such a glut of players that are natural 'corner guys' or suffer from particular mobility issues (Arraez) that should keep them in corner positions and not as much depth at SS/2B/CF type of players.
  14. Hey, if Astudillo can get Jax a win after a pretty decent six innings (minus a few pitches) I'll take it.
  15. Noting that to go along with recommendations here, the /r/minnesotatwins subreddit also put together something of a visitor's guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/minnesotatwins/wiki/visiting
  16. Hey all - I registered an account to ask a question of the community. I'm planning on a trip to Target Field in the coming weeks, taking a 10 yo to his first game experience and actually (gulp) my first trip to Target Field. (I did a mental recount about going to games - realized that the last games I've attended in person were at the Metrodome. I guess now that youngest is in his 'baseball phase', this is much easier...) What kinds of things are at / near Target Field this season that would be fun for kids and/or would be something of a memorable experience? - Is it worth going into the stadium early? Are there practices / players milling around before the game? (Are there food / entertainment options worth checking out before gametime?) - Are there any area baseball/Twins related experiences we should check out? (Unique card shops, etc.?) - It's a bit too early for hockey, but I thought a side trip to St. Paul might be interesting just for the outside of the stadium, a trip to the Saints Team Store (during the dates I'm looking at it also looks like the Saints are out of town), maybe a stop at Tom Reid's Hockey pub. Anything else worth checking out in St. Paul? I'm also open to any suggestions of "you've gotta do ____", outside of taking kids to bars and/or brewpubs. That's for a later trip...
