  1. Ben, I always thought it was showboating when you disrespected someone or did a "look at me" gesture. Yeah, the arrow qualifies in my book. But Batista's bat flip and Rickie Henderson picking up a base are clear examples. My favorite saying about Reggie: "There ain't enough mustard in the world for that hot dog."
  2. He relies on his slider and with the middle finger injury he was unable to get it to bite. I appreciate his giving it a try, but maybe we should have started someone else instead of a guy with a hand injury.
  3. Sano was out of shape after leg surgery. He tried to yank everything 500 feet to left field and lost discipline. He went down, lost some weight and got back to basics hitting wise. He is more selective now and not trying to pull everything. Don't get me wrong, he is still a dead pull hitter, but he is looking at more pitches now and leveling off his windmill swing. I think he will settle in and be better for the demotion. Give it time.
  4. Seth, that is a great observation. If you want that outside pitch, you will get it...often. And a step into the pitch but slightly towards the plate moves the sweet spot on the bat a few inches outside on your swing. Then the "inside out" swing, or what I call the "push away" swing can drive the ball hard the other way because you have moved the sweet spot farther outside on the swing so that you hit it dead solid perfect. Kirilloff has that figured out already.
  5. Doom, you ain't wrong. Sorry about your hip. 9 months? Actually not bad.I hope Logan makes it back somewhere. Also for people wondering about Buck and the wrist. A wrist injury is typically slow to heal. It took two years for my wrist to heal from a bad sprain. He also has a broken toe and much of his game is based on speed. I hope they let him rest
  6. River, the pain affected Logan's performance this year. I guarantee it. As a guy with a bunch of old baseball injuries, including a stubborn hip flexor, the pain makes it hard to sleep sometimes, much less play. Your range of motion is limited because your body stiffens up to try to protect against further injury. This is why Logan has had some pathetic swings at pitches in certain locations. I am glad Logan is getting it taken care of and I am grateful he tried to help the team as best he could. It is important to remember that these guys are human beings with lives, careers and often families, and in Logan's case a really good human being. I hate it when posters talk of them as if they were nothing but robots that exist for our amusement. I see this as a guy that was a great teammate and who tried to help, despite the injury. He played through pain. That should win him applause, not derision.
  7. They won't trade Mauer. He is family.
  8. Would like to see Gonsalves and Jake Reed come up. These guys have nothing more to prove at AAA.
  9. Good article Nick. Very good. I think that any team that wants to seriously compete needs to overspend for quality staring pitchers. The operative word there is "quality." Remember the Orioles late 60s early 70s staff? Palmer, Cuellar, Dobson and McNally? Yes a 4 man rotation. Anyway, Cleveland's rotation reminds me of those guys. So my point is ..... identify the key guys and pay them well. It is worth it. If nothing else think of the time the FO saves looking for a jewel in the scrap heap. Just step up and pay. Then you are not having to worry about how to win 8-6 ball games. You are planning for a lot of 3-1 wins. Gibby had a bad start recently, but he has learned how to pitch finally. He should be extended. He is a #2 or 3. Romero looks like a future Berrios. Gonsalves... geez, what does this guy have yet to prove at AAA? We got some good guys in trades. I want to see us bring up some flame throwers to see what they can do. Nobody much mentions Jake Reed or Bard. We know what Duffy can do. Lets audition some guys like Reed that have been waiting in the wings. I think we have the ability to develop a rotation with at least 4 lights out starters within the next two years. Maybe then it will be our turn to return to the WS
  10. Well, maybe the category where they could pitch around him. You cannot disprove the rule by citing an exception. And no fair person would try to prove anything based on 44 plate appearances. Jerry West was nicknamed "Mr. Clutch." They don't give a nickname like that because there is no such thing as "clutch." Joe Montana was clutch. Tom Brady was clutch, and Reggie Jackson.... well he is immortal because of the 1977 series. Everybody that follows sports knows that there are some guys that just have that special quality. Joe has been clutch, Twins style, and although I like Eddie, there is nobody I'd rather see bat for the Twins with bases loaded than Joe Mauer.
  11. Like hell. Joe is the ultimate gamer. He has played hurt many times and a fair person would give him credit for that. None of the guys you would replace him with has Joe's gravitas. And where is the loyalty? He is someone that is a historical franchise cornerstone. Like the the Brew and Kirby. He deserves more respect than you give him. And that means he and the FO get to decide when its over, not feckless fans. Besides, he is as capable of hitting .300 now as ever. I hope for a restful offseason and one more cup o Joe next year.
  12. Mike, I have had similar thoughts. Last night with LoMo waving at outside pitches in the dirt with one hand on the bat was pretty lame. Guys who are struggling do stuff like that. I remember Cuddy was a fish for curve balls in the dirt too, yet he was beloved by most fans and he was willing to hit the ball to all fields. LoMo, still trying to find his swing after three fourths of the season, is not good. He has been below the Mendoza line all year. He could raise his BA quickly if he learned to punch the ball the other way. It is wide open. Good hitters adjust. LoMo is rigid in his plate approach, and that is why the shift works. If I were a hitter, seeing a shift against me would tell me that I have become predictable. And I would find a way to make them pay for it by hitting to the open field instead of against 4 outfielders on the pull side. The last player that I remember to beat the shift consistently by being stubborn was Ted. And that was a loooooooong time ago.
  13. Well "clutch" is as real as the pitchers mound, or there wouldn't be a term invented to describe that special kind of gamer. Of course the best hitters have high batting averages with RISP. They have higher BAs across the board. But not all of them are clutch. Ted Williams used to be known for taking a walk. That did not make him "not clutch." If your rule is "get a good pitch to hit" like with Ted and Joe, then swinging at off the plate stuff is the easiest way to start a slump. Joe has been one of those hitters who avoids slumps more than others. His consistency is one of his hallmarks. That is part of being clutch too
  14. Always, I wanted to quote your post because it is so right on. I was too lazy to do the research but I watch most of the games on MLB TV and I have always thought Joe was one of the best clutch hitters in the game. When he comes up with guys on in a clutch situation he delivers. He doesn't do so in spectacular fashion often, usually a double in the gap or opposite field single. I have been a loyal fan for many years and I am hoping he sticks around for at least one more. That's my bias. I'd rather be biased for than biased against. Thanks for showing Joe's numbers.
  15. If Joe wants to play another year, he will. Get used to the idea. The Twins know how important he is to the team. I am going to enjoy watching him play.
  16. But that is ok because I am older than dirt
  17. except Dan Gladden, Chile Davis, Don Baylor, Dave Winfield, Jim Thome.......
  18. I wouldn't trade Joe for Smoak. I'd add a RH power hitter as a platoon. Someone not named Danny Valencia
  19. They will both be back next year. Joe will retire as a Twin in 2021 and have his jersey retired. Erv will want to make it up to the Twins for this busted year so if the Twins exercise the option, he will get a chance to make it right. If he is still able to go 93 mph, he is a #2 or #3. You don't just let those alpha male pitchers walk.
  20. You can answer this by just looking at the MLB logo. That's a picture of Harmon Killebrew
  21. Van, from your lips to God's ears.
