  1. I was thinking more in regards to upgrade on what they had already done as opposed to upgrade on tbe slop from last year. I just find the premise hilarious that if the Twins did what Rocketpig suggested that people on this board would be happy.
  2. Hey, I would have preferred Marcum and/or McCarthy over Correia, but people are vastly overrating those guys (and Saunders) if they think it would have been much more than a marginal upgrade (win or two, maybe three if they have a great and healthy season and Correia completely collapses). If that is enough to have made you so much more happy with this offseason then your standards are much lower than I thought.
  3. I think this is an interesting idea, but I would still think that the synthesizing of information into a strong and cohesive draft is the role of the scouting director. Ryan is most likely there to observe, make sure that the process is acceptable, and possibly to bounce ideas off. I would be surprised if he does much to help formulate the strategy for the draft since he would have such minimal observation of players.
  4. Thanks for the article, good stuff on the draft. I especially appreciated the section where he compared their strategy to Houston and Toronto. I was happy to hear they at least considered different strategies on how to spread the money around. I still think Buxton was the right call and like some of the other picks as well. As far as Ryan's role is concerned, I remember an interview from a couple of months ago where he answered a couple of questions on the draft and basically said he knows enough to be dangerous, that he might see a guy once or twice and makes a point not to have that shape his opinion or to try and influence the decisions that are made. It makes sense he would be in the room but I have doubts he does much in terms of making decisions. But the ultimate responsibility of draft performance rests with him.
  5. I would speak for yourself on this one. Two marginal upgrades and everyone here would be happy? Do you read the majority of postings?
  6. Actually recent history would suggest otherwise. Boras will do the first contract during arb years for a market rate. Especially for pitchers.
  7. Why is everyone so worried about Boras? He is a good agent but he'll sign a market contract.
  8. I personally prefer the Rogers Hornsby comp to the Hank Aaron comp. Twins need 2b not of.
  9. People have a lot more courage on anonymous message boards.
  10. I'll also add that while I don't have a problem with the payroll being where it is, I do appreciate that every interview I have heard/read with St. Peter or Ryan this offseason has involved a question (or more) about the payroll. It is good to hold them accountable.
  11. They still have to field a roster and it would be a mistake to fill the team with prospects that aren't ready. If they just went with one year guys the talent would be even worse. I don't imagine Morneau, Doumit or Carroll have a whole lot of value and the offers for Willingham probably weren't great in the offseason. If he stays healthy they'll probably get more at the deadline then they would right now.
  12. Bourne goes for 4/48 and vesting option for $12m in '17. Interesting that a team in need of pitching like Cleveland would pump $27m a year for the next four years for Swisher and Bourne. I don't especially like that plan.
  13. Now they just signed Bourn. Very interesting offseason. I still think they end up third in the division.
  14. To be honest I don't even remember the context of the original posting, but I don't think I would ever endorse the idea that durability is the most important. I would always take talent. I see IP as a function of both. I guess I saw this exercise as making a statement, having some people agree and having many other people raise questions, objections or alternatives to which I tried to respond. I don't especially care if people agree with me initial statement but I found it to be an interesting discussion on pitching and value. Regarding the lengths I went to to defend my point, I feel people went to similar lengths to try and disprove it so I felt they deserved a response in kind. Isn't that kind of the point of a discussion board (at least when we aren't trolling, engaging in ad hominen attacks or inciting flame wars with other)?
  15. Do you remember when he said that? He was just on the radio today saying again that they will not put Gibson in the bullpen at any point this season, majors or minors.
  16. Is Powers considered an optimist? I always thought he was a curmudgeon.
  17. But the point is that I would never pick or highlight only one stat when trying to evaluate a pitcher's performance. That would be ridiculous. Qualified ERA is fine but it's two stats. I wouldn't say IP of those with ERAs under 3 is the most important stat for a starting pitcher.
  18. Part of the problem is that pitchers don't throw again after the season until late December. Diamond said he had some soreness but they thought it was a result of the workload of the season. The injury was bone chips not anything structural. Perhaps a typical trainer/docotr would catch that. Perhaps not. Perhaps it was known but protocol was for rest for a couple months before throwing. If it wasn't caught or addressed in October it wouldn't show up again until he started throwing.
  19. This would be true if you don't count speed or throwing arm. And defense is really close as well.
  20. If, as rumored, Houston wants him tbe Twins would have to give something up to get him. Would anyone here give up something of value for Brignac? Probably a relief arm not on the 40 man.
  21. I'll throw this out -does anyone know anything about Martinez other than he put up an OK OPS in a high offensive league as a 26 year old? Chief is of course correct that 700k owed to Butera should have little or no bearing on a potential move but is anyone that sure that this guy represents that, especially on the defensive end?
  22. I think you are quite mistaken on both these points. No one has ever suggested using solely one stat and I have never promoted any attribute in a pitcher over talent (though I would acknowledge talent is of less value if a starter can't log innings to back it up).
  23. I said IP was the most important. I stand by that. But I also thought I was pretty clear that it was far from the only stat or a be-all end-all stat. To look solely at IP would be silly, just like it would be silly to look at any one stat to determine effectiveness. I would assume this is self-evident. I would put ERA second.
  24. So saying IP is the most important stat is an oversimplification? I would disagree with that interpretation.
  25. This is a ridiculous game to play. How about: Pitcher A: 3.00 ERA 3 innings Pitcher B: 3.20 ERA, 230 innings or Pitcher A: 5.30 ERA, 120 innings, 110 Ks, 80 BBs Pitcher B: 3.25 ERA, 125 innings, 96 Ks, 21 BBs You can prove a whole lot of nothing throwing out random stats.
