  1. This was my last rebuilding year so I hope this is right, it was the way I was thinking.
  2. I'm a little skeptical of Wacha as a dominant pitcher. He has the good fastball/changeup combo but not much of a breaking ball. I think that keeps him on the level just below these guys, but still another great pick from St. Louis.

I agree with this. After they couldn't get the top guys it was a young guy like this or a retread. And I consider Flip to be a retread in this equation.
  4. I chose to keep Bundy over Harvery in one of my leagues, I'm beginning to question that decision.
  5. I'll keep it open to noon tomorrow if anyone wants to put in an entry.
  6. I never posted mine: Verlander JWeaver Cain Wainwright Lester MMoore
  7. As far as Gardy this year, I would have little problem with him being replaced after the season. He is a good manager, probably one of the best in the game, but he has been here since 2002. That is a really good run in baseball or any leadership position in any industry. At some point it makes sense to go a different direction. The chances are the Twins are going to trade off more veteran pieces and break out more kids this year so there could be a need for more energy and someone willing to go through the growing pains of what should be a young team the next 3-4 years.
  8. How did he mishandle Santana? Start him in game one of every series? Pull him after 5 innings on short rest when Santana told him he was out of gas? Also, Balfour was replaced by Rincon. Had Balfour stayed in it would have been his first outing of three innings that season. Is that something you want to start doing in the playoffs? And Rincon had been lights out all year. This is the ultimate hindsight whine.
  9. Balfour isn't a fair comparison. He blew out his shoulder and took 2-3 years to make it back to the majors. Be happy that he overcame the injury and made it back but hard to fault the Twins too much for that one. (edit: actually he got hurt following the '04 season and didn't pitch in the majors until '08. It is a pretty amazing comeback story). Breslow was unfortunate, dropped him for a nothing guy, but it's not like he is a dominant reliever, but he is a worthwhile piece. That is why it is amazing to see any level of angst from anyone on this move. Best case he is a 4th reliever and like was said earlier that never hurts anyone, it is the most fungible piece in all of baseball.

    Tubby Out

I want to provide some clarification because I heard it again this week on the buyout. Maturi had negotiated an extension but Teague was the one who put the finishing touches on it. Teague was able to lower the negotiated extension from $3 mil to $2.5 mil in the final contract. That was where I got confused. I would support Teague a little bit in this one. He was in no position to fire Tubby at that time but was able to save the program a little bit of money. Maturi was nothing short of a disaster.
  11. If anyone still wants in submit by the beginning of games tomorrow.
  12. Mauer was one year from free agency while Posey was just entering his first of four arb years. Every year of Mauer was valued the same while Posey had four "cheap" years before his free agent years were valued. As is, it looks like each of Mauer's free agent years were $23 mil while each of Posey's were $21.4 mil so the Giants do get a discount, but I imagine this can be explained partially by leverage but probably more by the fact that Mauer was one year away from free agency while Posey was four, that factors into the value of the years.
  13. Pretty sure the Twins can still trade all of those guys this season and there is a good chance that they might even have better markets (this is especially true for Morneau is he is healthy all year and also Burton). They still need to field a team, you can't fill spots with prospects who aren't ready.

I got it off the radio but I won't argue with your links. That is a fiasco.
  15. All histrionics aside I think Boras ended up getting a decent contract for Lohse, especially considering there was compensation. I think he misjudged the market a little at the beginning of the offseason but recovered fine.

This is actually not completely true. The extension Tubby signed gave him more incentive pay (for each round of the NCAA that he reached), but it dropped his buyout from $3m to $2.5m. It was time for him to go. Good man and the program is in better shape than we he came six years ago, but it was stagnant at best and probably headed for a slide in the next couple of years. Now we get to see what Teague is made of.
  17. BYTO isn't coming back. I admire the goal of creating intelligent and respectful, I'm just skeptical it can ever exist on an internet message board. If someone posts nonsense and respectful disagreement won't dissuade them, that is what you are left with. And it's a lot less fun in the process.
  18. Bump. Now that we are a little further along in spring training anyone else interested in playing? You can post your picks in the forum or send me a message and I'll gather them for opening day.
  19. Sure, and like I said he values all of that differently. Sickels will rank a prospect with a higher floor/lower ceiling higher than others will. He did say that he ranks guys in rookie ball (or guys he hasn't seen) a little lower traditionally and he also said that he is a little more conservative than his colleagues and that often he is proven wrong in this scenario. I still think in all of your comments you are understating Buxton a little. He has the great tools but he also has skills to back them up. BA and Law just don't rank a guy highly because he merely has tools but also a reasonable expectation to put those tools into actionable skills as they climb the ladder. I also want to be clear that I am not against Gausman (or Zimmer), I think they are likely to be very good pitchers in the majors. I wouldn't have had a problem if the Twins drafted them, but I am higher on Buxton and despite current org needs think the Twins still made the correct decision.
  20. I think what Keith Law said in the chat yesterday is correct. The strength of the draft is pitching and the top Twins need is also pitching. That is good when that lines up. However, imagine a scenario where there are three pitchers they really like and the rest of their top 5/6 are position players and then the top three picks are the three pitchers that they like. It would be a mistake to jump to their 6th/7th/8th rated player just to get a pitcher. The example he used was the Royals in 2011, who wanted a pitcher and picked 6th. They had 5 pitchers they liked and they all went so they took Bubba Starling instead of reaching for another pitcher that was further down their board. Yes, all things being equal they should target a pitcher but they can't jump a bunch of spots in their draft order just to do so. If a position player falls they should take them and then load up on arms in the rest of the draft and hope that 1 or 2 emerge (kind of like last year).
  21. Trade for them? I still think it is a mistake to pass on a better prospect to take a position of need for players that will take a couple of years to make their debut. In two years the Twins system could look quite different and the needs could easily change. There is no reason to leave value on the table and reach for a specific position, especially this high in the draft. Always take the best player available.
  22. I have thought of posting this multiple times over the past two months and they always pull out another win to pull me back in just enough. I expect a first round exit but they'll probably surprise us with an elite eight run.
  23. I agree he is quite good. Provides necessary balance to BA and a lesser extent Law.
  24. I always thought the arb stuff was silly. If he was good enough to be in the rotation to start the season they should have rolled with him. Clearly he isn't there yet. So all the years of control/arb is going to work out anyways. Terry Ryan said it best when asked earlier about whether arb/control would be a factor in decisions. He said let's see him make the team first.
  25. False. He just values upside, floor and ceiling differently. He traditionally ranks rookie ball guys lower and safer prospects higher. So it makes sense for this year he would rank college guys who put up numbers in A ball higher than high school guys who did ok in rookie ball. He also generally will rank guys closer to the majors with low ceilings higher than other sites (ie relievers). I alsp think he has a little bias towards rankings that are more beneficial for fantasy leagues since that is a big part of his paying clientele. Buxton is much further from the majors.
