  1. Exactly. This goes for other free agent pitchers as well. Stopgaps made sense but the big signing was still overly risky for the current state of the team.
  2. This is easy. To get Grienke it would have taken a 7 or 8 year deal to beat the Dodgers at around $25 mil a year. It is possible he is effective for this deal (current fluke injury notwithstanding) but if he was to suffer an injury or a loss of effectiveness that would be a lot of money to have on the books. That is real space that will be needed to potentially lock up Sano, Meyer, Arcia, whatever other prospects might make it while also hampering any other free agent signings/trades down the road. This is a lot of ifs, but it is a huge risk for a team like the Twins who are and will be middle of the road in revenues.
  3. Grienke wasn't coming here after the last two seasons and it is unrealistic to expect the Twins to outbid the two LA teams, Texas, etc for a pitcher. Twins could easily have spent more and have more revenues than in the past but that is still a bidding war they cannot win.
  4. No he read it fine. People were getting dangerously close to saying something positive or admitting competence on behalf of the front office. That can't stand without some kind of response.
  5. This probably worked out best for Berrios. Doubtful the Twins wanted him pitching a full season this year. A couple weeks in extended keeps his innings down.
  6. I guess I don't see a big deal with what Gardy did with Hicks. I'll say again that fans are much more sensitive to this stuff than players are. The 2011 comparison is an interesting one to make. That was mostly a collection of guys who have proven they don't belong in the bigs (perhaps Parmelee and maybe Plouffe aside), I wouldn't take much stock in how they responded. I served in the military for 6 years and also have done a whole lot of leadership training. Your point is well taken but I think comparing the military with a baseball organization is a bit of a stretch. The military (in general) doesn't want internal issues to leak to the media and tries hard to suppress and re-direct inquiries, while leaders in baseball will occasionally use the media to make specific points for public consumption of a specific player.
  7. I should add I would have no problem if the Twins make a change but it would have very little to do with the reasons you have cited here or in the past.
  8. I disagree completely. I think fans are way too sensitive to this type of stuff and it really has minimal impact on an athlete's psyche going forward. Probably not unprecedented for a manager to mention to the media an aspect of a young players game that might need improvement. If you want to be charitable I would day Gardy has to be in front of something like this (even though Hicks didn't really do anything that egregious) and make sure his inability slump doesn't impact other aspects of his game. If you want to be less charitable Gardy has now seen Hicks basically take a big dump for 10 games, probably cost the Twins a game or two, and he wants to vent but can't talk about the elephant in the room.
  9. You blame this on Gardy?
  10. I wonder if he ends up as the long man next year (he will be out of options), seems like it could be a good role for him. Wouldn't have to turn over a lineup three times.
  11. So Mauer's defense is the equivalent of Lew Ford hitting while Posey's defense is the equivalent of Babe Ruth hitting? Good to know.
  12. Terry Ryan has more or less said defense was what kept him at Beloit last year.
  13. My theory is that he is being kept off the staff as a possible replacement for Gardy depending on how this season goes. Having him on the staff could cause additional (and unnecessary) pressure on the situation while also keeping Molitor clean of what will probably be another poor season. It makes sense that he would interact with all of the top prospects if he is going to be their manager in the next couple of years.
  14. Clearly he just needs more of your enlightenment. I can't understand why more people wouldn't think more like you.
  15. I agree with this. LF and 1B will not require much time to learn to be MLB ready. Ryan has said that he would have been promoted last year based on his bat but they kept him at Beloit because of his glove. I have a feeling that strategy won't be repeated this year. It is not mentioned often but I really think he has a greater than 0% chance of playing for the Twins this year. Anthony and others have said that his bat is close. Add that to the fact he has to be added to the 40 man in the offseason and that the Twins will be looking for a PR boost in September after trading Morneau/Willingham and slogging to another 90ish loss season. Of course he needs to keep hitting and more than hold his own in AA for this to happen.
  16. I'm always amused by the flippant attitude of those whose arms are not being cut into.
  17. I don't follow how this is a response to my point. I would argue all of those things are critical for a catcher but can be easily neutralized by pitchers who do a poor job holding runners or are slow to the plate. That's kind of my point.
  18. I won't argue that Mauer is elite defensively anymore (though hes strikes me as perfectly adequate), but citing those stats strikes me as similar to using rbis to determine who great hitters are. Using stats for defense is difficult to being with, and doing so for catcher defense is that much more difficult.
  19. I imagine he will have a relatively short leash.
  20. Good thoughts. #3 is especially true and applicable.
  21. How much of this has to do with Posey catching one of the best pitching staffs in baseball vs. the collection Mauer has had to catch. Posey might be elite and Mauer might not be but I question if citing these two stats proves anything either way. So yes, the eye test still provides value.
  22. Also, I'm not sure it is about pursuing stats as much as it about keeping pitchers in very specific roles.
  23. Fair points, but if you don't use Robertson in that situation there is no reason to have him on the roster (which might be the point anyways). Robertson had been successful in a similar situation as recently as the day before against a comparable hitter.
  24. Goodrum is my dark horse prospect for the year. Toolsy and could stick at SS but has the typical hit tool questions. Good to see him hit a little to begin the season.
