  1. Pretty happy with just about everyting in-state. I'm always a bit nervous when any party completely controls the executive and legislative branches however.
  2. If they offer one of their guys - you do this and run to the bank. This should be music to any Twins' fans ears.
  3. I think the ACLU certainly walks a fine line. They do a great job fighting for rights even when they are unpopular, but I think it's hard not to argue that many members of the ACLU slant towards the left. They also have become a bit more active in rights than defensive of those that exist. At least it seems that way to me.
  4. Cute to hear you lecture on realism! Jeez Dave - what's with your heel schtick on JR's ability to fleece people? (Look, it sounds just as obnoxious and stupid when I do it!) I don't care who the name is, in my opinion we maximize Span by dealing him for something akin to what KC did for Broxton. Or we trade him for someone with team control. Shields is a good pitcher but he's unlikely to stay here long-term when he has a chance to cash-in and you won't get as much for a pitcher in the final year of his deal. (See: Grienke) And all of this is assuming the price with Span isn't high. (It likely is) So, for many reasons, Shields doesn't make sense. Dangle Span for someone with 3-4 years on this team or start dangling Willingham for the Sheilds-types.
  5. Drudging up the overly optimistic Dave predictions would take centuries - there have been so many comically awful examples that it doesn't pay to just pick one. You're an optimist, great. The rest of us in the real world suffered with awful game experiences, no ability to sell season tickets when we couldn't make a game, inept play, and a product barely worth paying attention to unless you are a diehard. I've earned the right to be a pessimist and so has any other Twins fan. So no, I don't feel trading Span and a prospect for a two year rental is a sound idea. You want to swap him for Mike Minor, Tommy Hanson, or some other expanded deal with a prospect - fine. At least then you're helping the organization long-term and not trying to chase some naive delusion of contention.
  6. I found this hilarious today. One of my 7 year old students came up to me and told me that she hoped Mitt Romney didn't win because her mom said everything would change if he took office. So, she hoped Obama would win because he "wouldn't change nothin." No political slant, just ironically hilarious and a mood lightener for me today.
  7. I would give a late rounder for Flynn and draft a QB. If the guy can start right away scrap the Flynn move.
  8. Dave goes beyond optimistic - I was replying to him. He is right now planning the next ten years of World Series parades after Deduno took a minor league deal. He's in his own ballpark.
  9. Love the new defensive focus. Shved is the kind of versatile slasher you need on a second unit too. Only complaint is D-Will must have run over Adelman's dog - guy never sees the court after the first subs.
  10. They are 2-1 with reasons to be optimistic. Back to back 90+ loss seasons deserve pessimism. You are entitled to be optimistic but ridiculing pessimism because it doesnt make you a real fan is stupid.
  11. Where do I get the koolaid that makes almost laughably, childishly naive? But if you want to start a T-Wolves thread I'd be really optimistic! (Hint: They don't suck)
  12. The analogy doesn't work (not well for Bark either, but to stick with it) because the problem here isn't that you totally punt 2013 and 2014, it's just that you avoid investing money and assets into acquiring someone who won't be here any longer than that. If you want to pour a bunch of money into a guy like Grienke or Marcum or someone likely to be here 2-4 years. Fine. But trading Span and a minor leaguer to get a guy there is virtually no chance you resign in two years? That's bad organizational planning.
  13. I think my favorite part was when it was said that we could "realistically contend" if we just add "three more pitchers." When you couple that with the idea that Span is worth a top starter and you can tell why this thread is getting pretty silly. Span isn't going to land you Shields unless you're willing to attach a significant prospect to it. That's far too many assets devoted to the immediate future after two near 100 loss seasons. It's just a foolish waste IMO.
  14. Ponder can't set his feet, doesn't progress through reads, and panics even when the pocket naturally collapses....sadly I think Tebow may be an upgrade.
  15. At least all the Ponder excuse-makers are starting to back-pedal.
  16. Over a quarter in and Ponder looks god awful again. Harvin had an easy six with a decently thrown ball and he couldn't deliver. All of his roll-out throws have been erratic and he's had a ton of time. He's a failure people, let's accept it.
  17. No FA offers that are willing to overpay or match + terrible team = not an attractive destination.
  18. I think through business regulations and other things that came out of the bailouts you see his true colors. The system is supposed to work to moderate candidates this way, but what shouldn't happen is constant gridlock which I would agree is largely at the feet of the Republicans. Obama isn't this socialist monster he's made out to be, but he's left of center and significantly left of Clinton.
  19. The point is - you don't get to demand reasons, dismiss them, and say "Nope, wrong answer, you're right of center". If you want to make that charge, be prepared to defend it. You don't get to not like the answer and then declare everyone else has the wrong perspective without at least attempting to defend your position. You absolutely had that coming after twice demanding that the opposing viewpoint wasn't detailed enough and then, when it was, you start throwing smug grenades and labels around. The reason I didn't get more detailed in the beginning is because I know anything other than abstractions with you is a waste of time. You fall back on "well you're a conservative, so that's why you're wrong" line of argument. You and other liberals don't want resentment? Stop doing exactly that!!!! I've met a handful of liberals I could actually say "alright, here's the problem, what do we do" without it turning into a smug ****fest about stupid conservatives rather than anything pragmatic. It easily builds resentment.
  20. So you want specifics, get them, and then whine some more? Cmon man, this is pathetic. As drjim rightly pointed out, it's not just the tax hikes, attack the wealthy rhetoric - it's the combination of that with weak proposals to balance it with spending cuts. You believe what you are isn't as far left as it is and it skews your opinion and then you're preaching to all of us about how blind we are about where things stand. It's smug, annoying, and (sadly) predictable. It's yet another demonstration of why I just can't stand liberalism no matter how many points I might agree with it on. At least many a-hole conservatives can blame an all-powerful god for making them idiots, most liberals have only their own smug, head-up-their-butt naivety to blame. Excellent demo for us though, yeesh.
  21. Well said.
  22. I would argue you are looking for it to be uncaring rather than looking at it practically. Sometimes it's appropriate to call it uncaring, but not every attempt to reduce government is an effort to crap on the little guy. As I've said before, sometimes the left-wing agenda is far more insulting in the guise of being "caring". We should get past that as a country and as individuals and talk realistically about these issues.
  23. Tossing tons of money into an overpriced market and giving away high draft picks sounds like a good recipe to guarantee you suck down the line for only a marginal shot at being ok next year. This is not how you build a strong organization.
  24. If that's true then I hope the next time the issue comes up you avoid painting any position in opposition to the current system as vile. You have done that in the past Pseudo and, as I've said then, it's the same problem we see nationally. It's hard to have reasonable ideas on the table when even wheeling out the table makes you an uncaring, conservative prick.
  25. Then you haven't done a very good job analyzing your stance either. Your consistent need to paint every idea against the current lefty driven social welfare system as vile, evil, and uncaring is care-bearish. Taking a step off that ledge would be a good start. Then the issue is what level of left-of-center you consider "liberal" - I consider moderate Bill Clinton. Obama is significantly left of him, hence my claim.
