  1. Man is this thread filled with poor arguments from the Butera defense hiding behind what has to be the premise of infallible decision makers to over simplified AAA >AA arguments. The two sides of this are both rational but holy Christ on a cracker the arguments in favor aren't.
  2. i am fascinated, thank you. Your comments say a lot about how eager you are to cry "negativity". The busts and flops are the ying to draft day steals yang. It's part of the unique intrigue of sports and everyone should be able to enjoy that discourse without your nonsense.
  3. Thank you scrooge. Sometimes it's just interesting to talk the many strange ways baseball is both positive and exciting but depressing and bizarre.
  4. What do you think happens with EVERY SINGLE OTHER TEAM? Even Vin Scully is the same thing day in and day out, he's just a pleasure. Your distinction is pretty irrelevant.
  5. I think most people who have listened to alternatives around the league realize Blyleven is easily in the top half of all color guys.
  6. The point is that if you want to lump a drug with the more sinister and powerful drugs in the same family, you could do that to make coffee drinkers into drug addicts. Just like caffeine isn't as potent as speed, adderall isn't crack. It was a stupid comparison. Maybe the extra focus and concentration allows them to recall past at-bats. Or zero in on their pitching target. Or focus better on the seams/spin of a baseball traveling 90mph. Or maybe to tune-out the crowd. By all means, organize a study. But just because one hasn't been done to confirm the effects doesn't mean labeling people drug addicts based on a flimsy idea of "thrill seeking" and even flimsier lumping of all drugs with their most powerful cousins is a cogent argument. The simplest explanation is usually the right one - in this case - because baseball players believes it makes them better baseball players. Your fallacy-ridden mess of an argument is little more than tinfoil hat ridiculousness.
  7. Pfft all thrill seeking drug addicts. Especially this 18 year old kid with a onetime mistake. Lets comp him to crack heads and meth heads....because that makes sense.
  8. You realize by this same ridiculous logic one could call coffee drinkers "meth heads"? Is this some kind of hilarious attempt at the utter destruction of your own credibility? If so, you sir are doing a mighty fine job. With each subsequent post in your "all athletes are meth addicts" rant, I know I am taking you less seriously. In all seriousness, we are talking about some kid and his future and you are taking the discovery of a one time use of a prescribed stimulant and positing him a drug addict. That's just.....wow.
  9. Wow. Just....wow. I concede, clearly the accusation that most athletes are addicts stands on irrefutable logic. Wow.
  10. No, I deny rushing to the conclusion he is a drug addict for using a substance players across eras and sports are/have been using as a performance enhancer is reasonable.
  11. I would argue its not, in fact, just as easy to assume that everybody is a drug addict. That is such a ridiculous leap.
  12. That may in fact be a more dangerous conclusion, but in no way does a lack of studies confirming its use deny the potential positives on performance which I would argue was your actual point I'm refuting.
  13. I too believe that neither the world, nor any of it's phenomena, exist prior to double blind studies.
  14. Well your earlier point was to refute it because it wasn't a physical booster and my point is that even in largely physical sports, mental acumen is crucial. i don't know if it helps, but it sure seems there is a rich history of guys in baseball who believed it did.
  15. More NFL players are using stimulants to improve performance. The brain is the master control for the body - sharpening your reflexes and attention to detail in a sport could very easily create some significant advantages. I've read a few stories NFL-centric (out of Seattle I think) saying stimulants like this are becoming a backdoor way for players to try and improve performance. If a sport like football - FAR more physical - is finding a use for this stimulant, I imagine you could in baseball as well. Especially when mental fatigue in a 162 game season is a very real factor.
  16. Where did I claim he could? I don't know why he can't. I could see off-speed pitches as a reason. (But that could be changeups, not curveballs too) It could be that he's had some nasty injuries the last two years. Or he just might have stunk in his first couple partial chances. I don't know, but I'm not claiming to know. I'm simply asking someone claiming to know to give more some more information about his claim.
  17. Well, the one above is because you still haven't provided anything but anecdote to support it.
  18. I was more surprised by the casual brutality of Bolton. He's been presented, thus far, as a mostly loyal, ho-hum character. I mean, he let Jaime go secretly and that was a bit alarming, but he's hardly been portrayed as a ruthless turncoat waiting to happen. Frey has always been shown, at least to some degree, as a tentative/undesirable alliance. I read in a review that the salt and bread thing was highlighted early in the episode because that was an ancient Westeros tradition meant to ensure safety against betrayl. So not only did Bolton and Frey betray them, they basically took a big steaming dump all over some very engrained traditions in doing so. I love the nuance and the brutality of it even more on the second viewing.
  19. "Middle Outfielder" We need to get that one to Bert.
  20. Yeah, I love how Cersei is portrayed. I think sometimes it's too easy to make a character campy or too over the top, her cold indifference is really well acted. As for last night, the slow build to that gutting of the moral core of the show was brilliantly done.
  21. I think you're missing the context of "meaningful". Ryan said that as a way to imply that the Twins would still be fringe contenders in the last months of the season. It's hard to see this team doing that with the current slate of issues they are facing. This winning streak has been nice, but these trends have to continue to improve. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of volatility in then instead.
  22. That depends on what you ask for in return. I think you are framing most of your responses here too simplistically.
  23. I would agree, but I see these comments and others as deoderizers. Kevin Correia doesn't wake up tomorrow giddy to hear his manager has his back or that he feels appreciated. Now Hicks or Dozier after their games? Maybe they would. (And I'm not sure, maybe Gardy did that. I hope he did.)
  24. Also if the best we can do to explain these comments is to say Gardy is basically on autopilot for how he talks about players isn't that a major indictment of him at this point? I am in the camp that doesn't put a ton of tack into manger impact but I am a strong believer that the human element is critical to success and managing personalities is critical to that. So I guess I'm not satisfied with dismissing comments as irrelevant due to oing through the motions.
