  1. What money and trade ammo the team has needs to be focused on the bullpen and the catching position.
  2. Nope. Mauer's status as alive, unretired, and a Twin eliminates any chance of adding 1B help.
  3. Justify? No. My gut tells me they over thought it. The sneak should've been the first down play on a quick count. Then bust out the bag of tricks for a passing try after a tonight.
  4. Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory....
  5. I agree with you Dave, I just try and make a point to push back as often as I can to this bizarre trend to call everything we want a "right". The way the term is being employed by many groups is really problematic and, to me, annoying. It seems like a disengenuous way of trying to make your plight more sympathetic by describing it as something it isn't. And given the enormous changes religions have undergone over the last few hundred years it should be obvious to anyone hiding behind their faith that it's only a matter of time before most major faiths recognize it. Don't make the world drag you along and stay on the wrong side of history. Get over it and let committed individuals marry and raise a family if they choose to. We are all better off for it.
  6. Marriage isn't a right, it's a license you obtain by meeting certain conditions. A license you can also opt out of. But a license gay people should be allowed.
  7. Yeah, Towns is even better than any of us could have hoped. His offensive game has serious polish and he is clicking with Rubio.
  8. I would suggest that some of that retort is simply him saving face. Many, many people caught saying something stupid plea "taken out of context" and rarely is that defense warranted. We know he said these things verbatim, whether they are put side by side or apart doesn't change their content. It's clear how Torii feels (against SSM) so I'm not sure why anyone is taking the absurd position of spinning that. Some of the arguments minimizing or deflecting those remarks in this thread are just flat out stupid. The larger question for us reasonable folks is how to appropriately respond to his opinion. Personally I think there is too much vitriol directed at him for it, but I also think his opinion is stupid and backwards. I'm hoping since Torii seems like a he's generally a good guy that his opinion might be won over in the future.
  9. It is certainly true that there are a host of things impossible to specifically prepare for, but im not sure thats a sufficient response. Afterall, many CEOs surround themselves with something of a cabinet as well. While the issues arent exactly analogous, you are still talking about a lot of delegation, setting the tenor with your leadership, and navigating a complex field of obstacles. I struggle to think of anything, though imperfect, that comes close.
  10. I guess I'm not sure what the point is then? What is good previous experience?
  11. With this thread the offseason is officially underway.
  12. And that's fine, but other than politician what would that be? If we are talking good prep for all the things a presidency or governship will throw at you, I struggle to think what is more well rounded prep than CEO. The nature of governance makes analogous situations difficult. Mind you not all CEOs are good candidates (as this year clearly shows), but I do think it can be valuable previous experience.
  13. I agree with your points Pseudo, but nothing can really prepare you for government but government if we define it that narrowly. What else is there that can prepare you any better than being a CEO if you want to be a governor or president?
  14. I always thought the value of Grantland was bringing a variety of people to the sports table through a wide range of interesting articles and writers. I read the pop culture stuff as much as the sports. But it was also a money pit.
  15. You've gone further than that. You've eliminated any valid criticism of him other than for reasons of racism. And you doubled down on that in your last post, strongly suggesting that to criticize Hunter is to be a racist. I'll politely call that preposterous, though stronger terms are warranted for much of what you've said in this thread.
  16. Well, I guess that settles it. You clearly have to be a racist to criticize Torii Hunter's comments. Woofta.
  17. Seriously, you think that clown Kluwe's version of how things happened is more reliable than a guy who has a tape recorder in front of Torii's face? Good lord man. I'm sure Preifer shares the same beliefs Torii does. The only difference is Torii's were shared with the world by a journalist and Preifer's were shared by an attention starved doofus. They both think the same thing, I'm not sure what your point is other than you appear to be resistant to the idea that Torii has made some very criticize-able comments.
  18. I thought a lot of their sports analysis articles were very well done. It was a bit more irreverent than many other places along with being pretty sharp in what they did.
  19. So Mike Preifer can't claim "out of context" or "misquoted" but Torii Hunter can? Good gravy that's a terrible defense for Hunter's comments. And I think he's generally getting too much crap for it!
  20. ESPN announced today that the site is closing down. Thoughts? I'm really sad to see it go.
  21. What are you talking about, where did I quote Torii Hunter?
  22. Yeah, that was his predecessor.
  23. I don't know how good AA is, but finding someone to take Vernon Wells alone is more than Ryan has accomplished in a LONG time via trade. Then the "Yes, I'll take Josh Donaldson for this turd sandwich" trade puts him EASILY ahead. The guy has taken advantage of a lot of opportunities. Is some of that luck? Sure, but you can't get lucky if you aren't even in the conversation.
  24. I would agree with you jim. I think that approach to Hunter (and it was done in a post about Daniel Murphy too for that matter) is a problem. Hunter is entitled to his opinions and you are entitled to criticize him for them. But criticism can certainly be taken to unfair levels and that line has been crossed more than a few times relative to Hunter. I'm thrilled gay marriage is legal. I greatly dislike, and try to change anyone who claims it, the opinion that gay marriage is wrong. But there is a scary trend of trying to destroy people for having opinions we don't share. We should try to change minds, not destroy reputations.
  25. You're the only one who cares about LGBT? There is an entire thread of me taking on some stupid attempt at a logical refutation of gay marriage long before Hunter was here. Yeesh, get off your high horse. Making vague rips on people in the manner you are is completely uncalled for. I'm sure it's possible for people to both dislike Hunter on here and be doing things to positively push gay marriage that may not be evident to you. I'm sure it's also possible to just dislike some things that Hunter said. His approach to what he was trying to say about the latino players was so stupid it deserved to be criticized. Especially since what I believe was his point (people think there are still black men playing baseball, but they are mistaking darker latino players for black) may be an important one. He does a disservice to the very point he's making by approaching it like a total idiot.
