  1. Is the DH part of the bench? 13 man pitching staff = 3 man bench+DH I would do a 6 man rotation because most of the pitchers are young or have some injury concerns. Take a little bit of the load off of them so they end the season strong. Hughes - various small issues with the Yankees and only 140 IP last year Gibson - a rookie with 150ish IP last year May - 160 ish innings last year Meyer - on a big innings limit - bring him up and let him get a taste of the majors before moving him to the bullpen in Sept Nolasco - elbow issues (TJ waiting to happen) Milone or KC or Pino or I don't care who #6 is Of note the Twins have 11 games in 10 days in the middle of August.
  2. Milone >> Fuld but at the end of the day Milone is pretty meh. His stats look nice but so did Worley's. This profile of pitcher has such a small margin for error. If he's off just a little then he's going to be a pitching machine.
  3. He wasn't throwing 100mph during the college season from the sounds of it. If the draft were next week it's likely that he would be drafted but this is exactly the kind of guy that can slip through the cracks of all of the scouting teams. There was absolutely no reason to draft/sign any D2 baseball player just because he's a physical freak.
  4. I have never heard of a manager swapping his LF and RF'ers during an inning for an extreme pull hitter. Why have Delmon in RF against McCann if you have Revere in LF?
  5. We know this in hindsight but dropping 40-60+M on guys that haven't played MLB was a big gamble before there was much of an established track record.
  6. I hope a manager starts swapping OF'ers in key situations just to show you how ridiculous this is.
  7. You have greatly misused statistics if you only believe that Willy is marginally better than Nunez or Colabello. The message that this team shouldn't be sending is giving away a good player in order to play a much worse player in his place. Players understand if a veteran like Willy is traded but if there is no interest in getting something back and there is nobody with a future to replace him then it sends a message that we are trying to make this team as bad as we can but we expect you to play hard. I also think it's hypocritical if people are both calling for Gardy to be replaced and judging him by his 90+ loss record. The road to 90-100 losses is this strategy of giving away anybody that is good but 30+. Trading them for a decent prospect or to open up playing time for a good prospect is one thing but giving them away for nothing and replacing them with Colabello is dumb.
  8. Getting rid of the micro-managing doesn't mean getting rid of basic managerial roles like using relief pitcher and using your limited subs. Calling for a hit and run isn't comparable at all to micromanaging.
  9. How is this comparable to taking on 3-0? Shifting in baseball is not like using zone defense in other sports. In pro basketball they have rules that don't allow teams to play straight up zone. There are schemes that are allowed but there's an illusion of man on man basketball. In all sports I can think of they aren't allowed to delay the game while they shift players all over the place. In football the offense can snap at any moment. In basketball there is no delay. Everything happens on the fly. In baseball the 3Bman has to run to the other side of the field and the pitcher just waits for it to happen. I'm only emotional about the over managing of everything at the MLB level and how slow and boring the game becomes. I would also like to see rules that don't allow a pitcher to be pulled until he has pitched to 2-3 batters. A delay of game issued for those long, slow walks to mound allowing the bullpen pitcher to throw 2-3 more pitches. I just don't see how the shift actually benefits the game of baseball. I can see how it benefits a certain team that uses it but as long as the rule is the same then baseball would be better w/o the stupid shift.
  10. The Appel thing should be a complete non-issue in an organization. The fact that it pissed people off says that this is a very unhappy clubhouse. I wouldn't think anything if the Stewart or Thorpe (in Cedar Rapids) were given a bullpen session at Target Field if their mechanics fell apart. Frankly everything should be tried when a top prospect (pick 1.1) completely falls apart like this.
  11. Different games. Very different. This would be like saying that soccer should get rid of the offsides rule because basketball doesn't have offsides. what I don't like is the micro-managing that is done in baseball currently and the time required to setup each defensive set. We're not talking about a manager shifting a guy over 10 feet. I think I would lose my mind if I saw this used in a HS baseball game. Let the players play ball and take the manager and statistician out of the game where possible.
  12. typically 23 yr old rookies K more and walk less than they did before. He's going to regress for sure. If he didn't then he would be an all-star but I see him regressing more towards that solid SS that doesn't kill you with the bat. Maybe high .600's OPS. Somebody to hold down the fort until something better comes along.
  13. Okay then stay in that zone for the entire inning. I think it's silly repositioning players mid inning for each batter. Players have always shaded players towards their tendencies (like lefties pulling the ball) but this is just ridiculous.
  14. The problem is that basically just dumping one of the best players in the lineup sends the wrong message to the team. Somebody needs to be kicking their butts and motivating them instead of gutting the team for nothing of value. People like to think that players just perform to their level regardless but losing is contagious and dumping productive players to play marginal prospects like Parmelee and Colabello reinforces that. If there was any interest in seeing Pinto or Vargas then they could just dump Colabello and parmelee. There's almost no chance of these guys becoming productive MLB'ers. At least Willingham is productive now. now I'm perfectly fine if Willy is traded for anything useful. Morales wasn't traded for anything useful but he sucked while he was here.
  15. Arcia is frustrating. So much talent but he just can't get on a roll due to some poor habits. I drool at the prospect of a breakout season next year. Santana has had a very nice rookie season and looks like he could be a solid starter at SS. Tonkin - I want to see more before I grade him. I think he could be good but he had a terrible initial callup. Hicks continues to plummet down everyone's list. He's still young and he still has tools but that's about all you can say after the disastrous first two seasons. Perhaps people will stop criticizing the Twins every time a prospect isn't promoted after 60-80 great games at a level. Polanco gets an incomplete. Pinto better improve his catching because I'm not convinced that he will ever be a guy that you want to enter the season as Plan A at DH. Like Doumit he will probably be a nice hitter but not exactly the guy you want at DH. It's actually kind of scary to compare their MiLB stats. Almost the same # of G/AB's, AVG/OBP/SLG/OPS, K's, BB's and exactly the same # of 2B's. Escobar and Nunez are fine utility If'ers but hopefully Santana claims the SS spot at some point. Most of the rest are just utility players or practically the last guy that should be allowed to make an MLB team.
  16. To me the shift is just another example of the epidemic of over managing with the result of 3+ hour games. There might be some historical precedent of the shift being used 60-100 years ago but I doubt it was ever as often and as dramatic as now. right now the 3Bman has to run out to short right field. This over managing is just getting silly.
  17. I could change it to: one of our only good hitters. And the benefit is that we open up more playing time for Colabello, Parmelee and Nunez. Awesome. go for 100 losses. this isn't like DFA'ing Correia who isn't actually good and would guarantee that at least Mays would be up.
  18. Why on earth would you just cut Willy? He might not be here next year but that doesn't mean that you just cut one of your best hitters. And the twins don't have that many prospects that are being blocked. They have already opened up playing time for the immortal duo of Colabello/Parmelee. At least try to get something for him. It doesn't have to be a lot but at least get something.
  19. Likewise they are 4 games out of the 13th pick but they look awful this year (again).
  20. People need to remember that the early version of Yunel Escobar was really good even if he wasn't acknowledged for it. His first 3 seasons he had an .800 OPS. Things went downhill fast when he approached 30 though. If gordon hits .290/.375/.425/.800 with more SB's and better defense then the Twins have an all star SS.
  21. I hadn't really considered this as a possibility but I'm not really a fan of the IF shift. Yes, players should have freedom to position themselves based on tendencies but I like players being in the traditional area of the IF. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/23/verducci-baseball-should-think-about-an-illegal-defense-rule-to-combat-shifts/
  22. The correct way to approach this is as if Castillo is a FA. he seems like a legit MLB starter and the Twins need OF'ers despite everyone thinking that it's an organizational strength. This will likely still be true in two years unless multiple prospects become good in a short amount of time (usually doesn't happen but could). Some think he will get 25-35M but I wouldn't be surprised if he gets 50-60M. Imo this bidding is going to get crazy since there are teams that aren't able to spend all of the money they have. FWIW - 28 teams attended the workout so it doesn't mean anything that the Twins were there. At least they aren't 1 of the 2 teams that didn't attend the workout. Imo the Twins should have more interest than they have shown since they are one of the teams that can't spend all of its money and Castillo should be good and he's 27.
  23. I don't really care as long as they stay in the top ten. Despite signing Nolasco they will still have money to spend and a FA like Ervin Santana could slip in FA for a bargain again. There is no way that they can justify losing pick #11 but losing pick #45 is justifiable. Unlike many I actually would like to see them win some games and create a better clubhouse atmosphere. It's something to build on next year.
  24. How will we complain about how conservative the Twins are if they call up A ball players to the majors?
  25. I think I will make do with Gillaspie at 1B. It's helps to collect a prospect or two since I wouldn't mind flipping them for an undervalued starter. It seems like every year my team (basically every team) is held together by band aids. I have just enough to field a lineup. Looks like you picked the wrong week to match up with me. My team has been coasting for awhile but they have stepped up so far.
