  1. I think that there is a disconnect with actually "Good" (which I think as "better than average") and "better than some of the rest of the Twins' relievers, like Breslow". 3.90 ERA, 4.91 FIP, 1.23 WHIP (.266 BABIP) , 12.8 % K-BB%, 79.3% LOB% Bosher's numbers this season. Not much "good" about them. Pretty average to below average, and about to regress. I don't have much problem with this dumpster diving, other than the facts that: a. it really has not been that productive at the major league level b. Too many of those types of players block younger players (eg. I'd rather see Melotakis rather than Buddy Bo with the Twins, and Romero rather than Melville with Rochester) c. Yes, some of them have potential (eg. Turley) that's why they are still playing baseball. Having potential and realizing at the majors are 2 different things.
  2. Tonkin has proven that he can get out AAA hitters, but not MLB hitters. Same old with him. Dunno about Melville. To tell you the truth, I'd rather see what Turly and Busenitz can do in the pen than Melville... Garver is having an amazing season. Here are a few more 800+ OPS seasons by Red Wings' Catchers that should be mentioned: Chris Herrman hit .304/.373/.505 in 60 games (228 PA) in 2014 Dan Rohlfing hit .314/.402/.430 in 26 games (103 PA) in 2013 Jose Morales hit .336/.413/.436 in 58 games (242 PA) in 2009 Corky Miller hit .229/.379/.465 in 59 games (219 PA) in 2005
  3. Better than average? In which way? Dozier's rankings among second basemen: fWAR: 13th wOBA: 17th wRC+: 16th OPS: 18th fangraphs Clutch: 29th That's looks pretty mediocre/average to me. Objectively.
  4. Dozier is part of the problem here, since he keeps Escobar on the bench when everyone is healthy. The Twins are a better team with Escobar at second than with Dozier. I know all about "digging the long ball", but Esco is a phenomenal .322/.366/.545 with men on (Dozier's pathetic numbers are up there.) Plus there is a long line of middle infielders waiting in the wings (or the Lookouts for that matter) Dozier is part of the problem here, and if they have the opportunity to move him, they should. If DeLeon was offered 1:1 for him last season, I suspect that they are regretting not pulling the trigger. Dozier should be upset with himself and his pathetic performance on the batter's box with men on. Big part of the reason the Twins are sellers (and that pitching thing.) Mauer is also sub par as a first baseman, but the Twins do not have better MLB-ready options at this time point, and he is an immovable object, and not only because of his contract.
  5. Johnathan might have had a good July, but his July was not as good as Alberoni's (and you gotta love that name) From the ignored affiliate down South, July notable hitters: Alberoni Nunez: .500/.554/.793, 6 BB, 14K, 5 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR Yeltsin Encarnation: .365/.431/.615, 6 BB, 5 K, 2 2B, 4 3B, 1 HR Estamy Urena: .346/.417/.500, 6 BB, 7K, 2 2B, 2 HR
  6. And from the ignored Twins affiliate down South: Michael Montero: 5 GS, 2.59 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 24-1/3 IP, 9 BB, 27K
  7. Logistics: Adrianza and Gimenez are not FA. Both are arbitration eligible. Gimenez will be a FA in 2019, Adrianza in 2021. Boshers and Vargas will not be Arbitration eligible until after next season.
  8. Escobar (102 vs 101 OPS+ total, .336/.377/.575 vs. .215/.309/.326 with men on.) Polanco until further notice is a SS.
  9. Nope. The existing 40-man by the end of August (during the season) influences that, because someone needs to be on that roster by 8/31 to be called in September. Trades also need to be taken into consideration. Let's say that the Twins fully plan to protect Gonsalves, Stewart, and Curtiss (just throwing names out there) . However, they work a trade with (let's say) Tampa and all 3 are included in a trade for (let's say) Archer. They do not need to be protected. And even if they were planning to protect them, for sure they would not need to do that in August so they can pitch in September...
  10. He is either "solid" or a "journeyman". Can't be both. I'd take door number 2 and say that he just got lucky and will get exposed big time.
  11. Here are a few reasons: 1. So they can get something for him before he walks as a free agent 2. So that they get someone at 2B who will reach his prime when the core of the team does 3. Because he is getting worse with both the bat and the glove, and is past his prime 4. Because some one else at second base will give the Twins a better possibility of winning 5. Because getting 5K a day and not getting benched the next does not teach his teammates a lesson 6. Because he is an almost near collision on any infield fly ball 7. Because he is hitting .217/.311/.329 with men on and he his on pace for a 2 fWAR (or less) season; and he is getting older (and worse) 8. Were he a "leader", the team would not had lost 100+ in his career season. 9. Because he does not close the door to the bathroom when he does his business, and he makes it a point to make his private business public, in general Want any more?
  12. 3 plus WAR in their dreams, or in the past. After 103 games: Dozier 1.3 fWAR, projects to 2.0 fWAR for the season, Ervin Santana 1.1 fWAR, projects to 1.7 fWAR for the season They are 2 WAR players who are aging and getting worse. They both need to go.
  13. This is about 3.5 months premature Lots of transactions until then and I suspect that some of the names in the list will not be with the Twins. BA called Gabriel Moya "arguably the most dominant reliever in the minors". To me he is automatic. Reed is kinda of a borderline guy. I'd put him behind Burdi and Bard at this point. And behind Curtiss and Moya. The previous administration loved him, but the decision makers will be different by then. Have to factor the upcoming changes in the FO, as well. That's why I am thinking that it is way too early to even think about this.
  14. Do you doubt the second part? Do not go far, just look at what Liam Hendriks, Anthony Swarzak, Brian Duensing, and Jeff Manship did after they left for nothing... And I should not even mention Pat Neshek and the way he was treated by the front office.
  15. Realistically, why should there be a stronger marker for an aging rental with one effective pitch (sinker,) a 3.68 FIP who struck out only 5.4 per 9 innings for the season? And in the second half, he has had a 6.00 ERA and 1.67 WHIP (even with a .280 BABIP). I think that the Twins made a killing here. Kintzler is just not that great. In a competitive team, he is a decent 7th inning pitcher, probably a notch or two worse than Matty Guerrier in his prime. In a competitive team, he will have the role that Belisle has for the Twins. Kintzler and the Twins lucked out by the circumstances, but there is nothing elite about him. And I hope that the Twins do not even think about re-signing him as their closer next season. They can do better.
  16. With the results they have had and esp. the way they played against Boston, Houston, and the Dodgers (all teams they need to beat to win this off-season), how can they not "give up"? Oh, they have to pass the Royals too.
  17. Baseball America is a bit more conservative in their assessment of the Yankee's prospects. Littell sounds a lot like a Haley type (wasn't Haley ranked at that level by MLB.com last winter, as well?) and Enns sounds like a LOOGY. Who knows? The Twins had to do that trade. The fact that they "ate" $4M makes me think that they are not done and will recover that by other trade(s), be it Santana, Dozier etc. Kintzler will likely go, but his $ owed is negligible. Good beginning so far. They got 3 arms close to the majors. I suspect that we will see Enns sooner than later with the Twins
  18. And not without cause. It is their job to light some fire under the players. Like his predecessor, Molitor has failed to do that...
  19. If the Twins can get the guy that Baseball America called "arguably the most dominant relief prospect in the minors" for John Ryan Murphy, they should be able to get someone with a heartbeat for Hector Santiago. The Twins should do now, what they should had done last off-season: Trade Santana, Kintzler, and Dozier, as well as Garcia, for good young controllable pitching. Btw, not sure that the Twins were "wise" in not trading Dozier for DeLeon (if that were the trade offered.) DeLeon has higher probability in contributing for the Twins when their young core will be getting into their prime (2019-2020) than Dozier. Again, I don't get the lack of love for Rosario vs Buxton. If Buxton is still that highly regarded within the league, I'd love to see the Twins try to see what they can get for him. If they can get someone like Starling Marte, who is a gold glove centerfielder who can hit and steal bases now (unlike Buxton) and Felipe Rivero (who is probably the best young bullpen arm in baseball), they would be nuts if they do not do it, because it will improve the team now and in the future.
  20. Not really. Sulbaran brought Nunez who brought Mejia. I'd trade Buterrible for Mejia every day of the week.
  21. In chance you have not seen it, the Baseball America take on the trade is here. From their description of Mora: "The Diamondbacks signed Moya out of Venezuela in 2012. Five years later, he’s evolved into arguably the most dominant relief prospect in the minors. Moya is on an historic run, having not allowed an earned run since May 2 as Double-A Jackson’s closer. That’s a stretch of 24 appearances and 30.2 innings. The 6-foot, 175-pound lefthander does it with a deceptive low 90s fastball that looks like it pops out of his ear in his delivery and a plus-plus changeup regarded by many as the best in the Southern League this year. He also has a slider and curveball he can mix in to provide a different look, throws strikes and earns raves for his competitiveness. With deception, an out pitch, and a closer mentality, Moya is a perfect 17-for-17 in saves this year and has a chance to be in a big league bullpen shortly."
  22. Good trade. From Rauch for Mulvey to Palka for Herrmann, I cannot remember a trade with the Diamondbacks that actually was not good for the Twins
  23. To succeed in the post season the Twins do not need to beat Oakland. They will need to beat the likes of the Astros, Red Sox and Dodgers. And they have proven that they cannot win a series against those teams, neither at home nor on the road. The Twins are 20-30 against opponents with winning record. Even if they beat another horrible team this will not make them contenders.
