  1. The Twins drafted him in the 5th round in 2002 and he did not sign. He was drafted by Detroit in 2005 in the 6th round and signed.
  2. I guess he takes Baker's 40-man spot. Either Revere to AAA or Burroughs waived
  3. The Twins picked up 3 Thompson pitchers this off-season (Aaron, Brad, Daryl). Why not a 4th?
  4. Hughes is fine defensively. He just made ONE error. He turn THAT DP but the umpire blew the call. Blame the umpire not Hughes (like DickNBert did.) I think the first one down will probably be Burroughs. LH bat and all but he is an overmatched LH bat and the Twins have way too many LH bats any ways. I just hope they are able to work a couple of trades for some of the players (inc. pitchers) who are out of options...
  5. Actually this is not true. The latter half of Spring Training Swarzak was starting and not coming out of the pen
  6. I will probably do it weekly for the Majors. I could do the minors as well but Seth does a great job with that. What I do as a monthly feature is "who is hot in the Minors", which lists the Twins' prospects who are performing the best year to date. I will probably have the first one up in about a week or 2 or so to give the pitchers enough time to build innings. Thanks!
  7. The problem with this is that the Twins have control of Willingham and Span at least until 2014 and Revere and Plouffe until 2017. Unless there are some trades, Hicks and Arcia will be blocked. Add Benson to the equation (team control until at least 2018) and the numbers game gets ugly. That's why trading Span soon, is a good thing IMHO
  8. Not sure about that... It looks like both Swarzak and Hendriks will be in the 2013 rotation and if Swarzak pitches another good game it will make no sense to send your (gulp) best starter in the pen...
  9. I have been on the record saying similar things regarding the Twins for a while now, but I do not buy Jesse Mandell-McClinon's premise. It is not all minorities and the Twins made an African American the highest paid player in Baseball once. My premise is that the Twins, since after Andy McPhail, are treating Latino players differently than non-Latinos in the organization. And not only on contact extensions/re-signings/non-tenders etc. but in day to day cultural & language support (compare what they are doing for the Latinos in the MLB club to what they are doing for the Japanese player in AAA). And not only players; look at how many FO and field management staff are Latinos for the Twins' compared to the rest of baseball, for example, in addition to how many Latino players are on their 25 men roster compared to the average team...
  10. He is actually ahead of schedule. I saw him a couple of weeks ago participate in a pitcher's fielding drill in Fort Myers with a whole bunch of AAA-A pitchers. They were actually throwing the ball to the catcher and he was just soft tossing it, but overhead. Which is a great sign. Here is he on March 29th. You can say that he is throwing of a mound, but he is just soft tossing: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7118/7028032639_301b773fe7_z.jpg
  11. Tonight's performance by Swarzak is critical to another member of the Twins' 25 man roster:If Swarzak repeats his performance in Baltimore and pitches well in this start, when Marquis is activated next week, it is likely that Hendriks will be sent to Rochester (and one of their starters - DeVries?) to the Rochester pen. If Swarzak falters and Hendriks pitches well on Sunday (that's when he is scheduled), then Swarzak will be in the Twins' pen and another member of the pen will be sent to Rochester. Currently the only Twins' pen members with options are Burnett and Duesning (if I am correct - Not sure about Capps or Perkins but they stay.) Duensing stays also. So it is Ali going to Rochester or someone else (Burton?, Maloney? Gray? ) through waivers....Thoughts?
  12. Another thing that needs to be mentioned for the Rochester game: It was a Butera error (almost typed Buterror, freudian slip ) which opened the floodgates in the 7-run inning against Rochester. I made an April Fools' joke about Butera becoming an outfielder in this organization, but it seems that in the 2 highest levels (AAA, MLB) they like to use Catchers (instead of Angels, bad movie reference) in the outfield (Butera, Towles, Doumit.) Might be a trend, but I hope it ends pretty quickly, since there are more suitable players to play the OF (Heck, they DH Bates last night. I bet he could do better than Drew or Towles out there when Dinkelman needs a rest) On another note, it was great to see Marquis' performance last night. I know AA is not MLB, but finding the strike zone (a problem Marquis had throughout the Spring) is pretty much the same whether you are facing little league or major league opponents.
  13. Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch --- The Twins are 2-4 in this early season, after being swept in their first series at Baltimore and winning the series against one of the AL darlings, the LA Angels at the home opener at Target Field, 2-1. This series win is very hopeful, because if they Twins win 60-70% of their series, they will be in the post-season. They stand at 50% right now and winning the Rangers' series, will put them at 66%, which is right on course. A position player and a pitcher stood above and beyond the Twins' peers this week and they are the Twins' players of the week. Position player: Josh Willingham: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7045/7073742679_f68b0dc8b3_o.jpg .409/.458/1.000 4 HR, 7 RBI, 1 2B, 1 BB, 5 K, (24 PA) Pitcher: Glen Perkins: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7058/6927661912_4eac00f7b5_o.jpg .000 ERA, 0.545 WHIP, 2 H, 0 BB, 6 K (3.2 IP)

  15. To reply to the original question of the title: Joe Benson had 4 strike outs in 5 PAs tonight. His batting average is down to .133. For comparison purposes, Butera's is at .213 (Small sample size, but I'm sayin'...) I don't think that Joe would look at the CF this year for a while.
  16. Broke a finger. Out for a bit and with Carson and Benson the only outfielders, Hollimon, Towles and today Butera (and Dinkelman of course) have all been playing OF.Tosoni will be back next week it sounds like. Wilken Ramirez on the DL does not help either
  17. Of course he assumes that the Rangers and the Yankees will have a better record than the Twins in a few months. That's a bad assumption.
  18. I think that the best thing about Willingham is that he made Twins' fans forget about Cuddyer. (And he is better than Cuddyer)
  19. The Miracle has a hand-written board at the concourse as well. Not sure about Rochester. I've only been at their away games
  20. No. For the "I do it" board, look at the DIY channel website.
  21. Yes. That's were it landed. Either onto the concourse or over it and out
  22. I think that competing or not the Twins should trade Span at the deadline to help them compete (if they are competing in 2012 and) in 2013. In recent memory a similar trade was that of Nate McLouth from Pittsburgh to Atlanta (when he was at the peak of his value as Span is) for 2 of Atlanta's top 5 prospects and a young MLB-caliber SP all under team control for many years. If you look at the Twins' rotation in 2013, you have to see that it needs work... So got to give something you have excess (OF depth and in 2012 became more that in 2011 because Angel Morales is back and stronger than ever) to get something you don't (SP.) As a matter of fact in some Twins top 10 prospect lists there will be at least 4 outfielders in the middle of the season (Arcia/Benson/Hicks/A. Morales - alpha order.) Cannot accomodate them all. Something has to give. Also, I think that an OF of Willingham/Revere/Plouffe-Doumit is not much of a drop-off than one of Willingham/Span/Doumit-Revere-Plouffe. It seems that Plouffe has been the odd man out in the OF equation so far and at this point getting him some PAs instead of Span would not hurt.
  23. Did you wonder when is the Birthday of your favorite player in the Twins' Organization? Did you know that Brian Dozier and Justin Morneau shared Birthdays? So do Chris Parmelee and Nick Blackburn. And the NewBritain clubhouse will have a lot of fun on August 20th, the shared birthday of both their pitching and hitting coaches (Bobby Cuellar and Tom Brunansky). And do you know the most popular day as far as Twins' organization players and staff birthdays go? It is November 24th when 6 members of the organization celebrate their birthdays. Here is the list of more than 200 birthdays in the organization; it can also serve as an organizational roster. A couple of caveats: A. Some players who are mentioned in the list are no longer with the organization. This will probably clear when the short season leagues are announced. B. Some players in the Twins' organization (esp. the new International Signees not in Extended Spring Training who will play in the DSL or will join the organization this summer,) as well as the managers and coaching staff at the short season leagues are not listed. I do not list front office/announcer/broadcaster etc birthdays. Without further ado (and please help fill any gaps) : For space considerations, please visit The Tenth Inning Stretch for the full list of the Twins' organization birthdays
