  1. I don't disagree what I am not buying is that Twins would potentially give Span more $ at the 20th spot than the Rockies at the 9th. Remember. That was 2002. Contraction time...
  2. Another interesting tidbid from the same article of interest to the Twins' fans: Law indicates that Span would have been picked as the 9th overall pick by the Rockies but he wouldn't have signed for them because of the money, so he dropped to the Twins' 20th spot. I don't know whether to believe that or not...
  3. Pretty sure that he shaved it right after he got demoted in ST...
  4. Not quite I think that TK got so sick and tired of Davis (and Atherton in lesser extend) that the Twins went out and got an All Star closer with 100+ saves under his belt for the 1987 season (Jeff Reardon.) When the Twins got Aguilera in mid '89 with the Viola trade, he was the Mets RH set up man and occasional closer, but since Reardon was still with the club and Aggie wanted to start the Twins let him start for the remaining of the season and let him be the closer next season after Reardon left... but you are correct, Aggie had less that 10 career saves before he joined the Twins.
  5. Revere was promoted. It was announced
  6. Swarzak/Maloney/Deduno/Diamond/Walters etc. Let them show what they got. Swarzak started a couple games. Let him start more. Give Maloney a start here and there
  7. Trying to remember when they are opening their doors... About 15-20 min before 1st pitch for the Miracle and from 1.5 hr before to the first pitch for the visitors (they take BP last so they are on the field when the doors open) Also, if you are interested in Visitors autographs, you can stalk the team bus and wait for the players to come out after the game is done...
  8. Taking Buxton makes zero sense, unless the Twins are planning on thinning their current OFs in the minors sometime soon. Here is what They have as far as high end OF prospects are concerned: AAA- Revere, Benson AA - Hicks A+ - Angel Morales, Oswaldo Arcia A - JD Williams R - Max Kepler Add the fact that probably another top prospect Sano? Rosario? Goodrum? might end up at the OF (and so might Mauer when the bulk of these prospects are in the bigs), and the least thing you want to do is take another OF in the draft. The Catcher might make sense, but I'd rather see them go after SP because of the questionmarks they have
  9. I think that this team has to ask itself whether it is rebuilding (at least the rotation) or not. If it is rebuilding (and the answer will have to be 'yes' next season with 4/5ths of the rotation going away,) makes absolutely no sense to have another (semi) stop gap solution. Get kids from the minors (or the pen) to see what you got, at least before you start the next season. Might want to trade any veterans with any value (only one I can think of is Pavano at this moment) in a month or 2. Webb/Osward/Mays/Kazmir/ are not the solution
  10. Didn't realize that Angel Morales dropped that low this off-season...
  11. one clarification: In the Minors, there is only one DL: the 7-day So major or minor everyone goes on it
  12. late last night word from New Britain was that he has a "strained flexor tendon" (same thing that Baker had.) Does not sound too encouraging, but I hope it's nothing serious
  13. Here is this week's installment: Very disappointing loss to the Red Sox last night, but some highlight reel plays and lots of near misses. Unfortunately that left the Twins with a 5-12 record, seven games under .500 and 5.5 games behind the Tigers. The official rule 4 MLB draft order has been announced and the Twins have 6 picks in the top 100, including the second overall pick Phillip Humber, another player discarded by the Twins, pitched a perfect game last Saturday. Add that to his performance for the White Sox in 2011 and the Johan Santana package looks better for the Twins. They just did not know what to do with what they got... If you wonder about some of the activities of some of the Twins' top prospects, you got to see this And if you wonder how life on the road is for minor leagues, make your you read this blog by AJ Petterson who is playing for the Beloit Snappers This is a great writeup for another Ballpark that has an anniversary this year, albeit closer to the Twins' home Next Saturday at Target Field is "Ben Revere Bat Giveaway Day". Great planning. Twins' fans, if you are into running or even thought about getting into running (there is plenty of time), make sure that you register for the Fiteens5K this August. A great charity, run by Glen Perkins and his wife Alisha and a great downtown Minneapolis race which includes a free ticket to a Twins game in the Rays' series and lots of Twins giveaway goodies. And to sweeten the deal the race ends at Target Field, every finisher will receive a medal and Twins' players will be hanging out those medals. Just do it! I might even consider flying to the Cities for this race. This is very sad: A particular former Twins' prospect (was released before the season begun) started with this tweet and then started digging himself deeper... his timeline is here. Amazing. Not what you do when you look for a job, kiddo. An apology came later but still... The parting shot today is of Josh Burris. The Folks over at Twins' Daily have started an "adopt a prospect" theme and Josh Burris its the Twins' prospect I adopted. 15. Well... the Manager of the Millennium was outmanaged by Valentine big time tonight...
  16. Look at the 40-man roster and pick one: Revere Mastroianni Butera Nishioka Arcia Tosoni The last 4 are less likely for different reasons (Nishioka and Tosoni are injured) So it will be Revere
  17. Texas signed him the offseason of 2011. He needed another shoulder surgery. His velocity was like low 80s. I think that he had surgery in Aug 2011. Allegedly he was to be ready by opening day. But at this point, I will not be surprised if he hangs them up
  18. And I think that both he and Carlos Gutierrez are down to Fort Myers as of this weekend for rehab and treatment at the EST
  19. Yeah. That Range at OF and Plouffe at 2B are pretty scary. At least Marquis is an extreme ground ball pitcher. Just hope they hit them the other way
  20. Joshua D. Burris was born in Baton Rouge, LA on November 28, 1991 and was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 17th round (538th overall) of last years Amateur (Rule 4) Draft. This is his first season in professional baseball, since he singed late, on the deadline (August 15th, also know in these parts as the day the Twins traded Delmon Young to the Tigers) and has not yet played any official professional games. Currently he is in Fort Myers for Extended Spring Training and will probably be assigned to one of the 2 rookie league teams, likely the Elizabethton Twins (Appalachian League.) You will not find a fangraphs page for Josh Burris. Baseball Cube, MLB.com, and Baseball Reference have only Biographic information and this is somewhat incomplete and innacurate. Josh started playing baseball very young. His father (on this committment day to LSU) claimed that he was playing since he was 3. I am not certain about this, but Josh played baseball from ages 9 to 15 in the Scotlandville Sports Academy, "a community organization determined to enhance the lives of at risk youth in the Baton Rouge community through structured athletics and educational activities". Josh Burris in 2009 during High School http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7176/7107694573_5af8bfd600_o.jpg He later attended the Scottlandville Magnet High School in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA, where he was an outfielder and pitcher. At his senior year, he was listed as 5'10" and 165 lbs, and during High School he was batting and throwing right handed. In the summer of 2009 he was joining the curcuit of top prospects at the National Showcase, who were recruited either by pro or college teams. Here is a hitting and pitching video of Burris from the Showcase (about 3 years ago.) Scouted and touted as "one of the liveliest arms in Louisiana", later that year, on November 18, 2009, Josh signed his letter of intent to go to Louisiana State University, on his High School Auditorium among his family and friends. In his Senior season at High School Josh was the East MVP in the High School All Star two-game Series, when he pitched three scoreless innings in the first game and went a combined 2 for 4 at the plate with a run scored in both games. He was also named in the 2010 LA All League First Team. A note of interest: The only other player from Josh's High School who played professional baseball, is RHP Michael Taylor who was drafted by the Cubs in 1975 and played 2 seasons in their Florida State League (High A) team. For sore reason, Josh did not enroll at Louisiana State, instead he enrolled at the NJCAA Louisiana State University - Eunice for the 2010 and 2011 season. LSU-E, is one of the biggest baseball powerhouses in the Junior College circuit, being crowned National Champions 3 times the last 6 seasons and always competing. Burris played both in the Fall and Spring Seasons. He wore uniform #6 during the Fall and uniform # 3 during the Spring. A two-way player, OF and relief pitcher, he hit .273/.432/.364 in 55 AB (started 19 games) with 15 hits, 1 triple, 1 home run, scored 21 runs and drove in 7, while walking 17 times and striking out 11. He led the conference in stolen bases with 13 in 16 attempts. His Fielding percentage was .292. As a pitcher, in 13 games he recorded a save pitching 21.3 allowing 14 Hits, 12 Runs (11 Earned), 20 Bases on Balls, while striking out 32, limiting opposing hitters to a .203 BAA, and recording 3 WP, 3 HBP and 1 BK. During his Freshman (and only) season in College, he platooned at the OF (still hitting RH) and was used in long relief/closer role. He struggled early in the year with command. But, has been extremely dominant in his last few outings. His fastball averages 93/94, and his excellent curveball was his main weapon. He was also named in the 2011 Louisiana All State Team Burris with the LSU Eunice Bengals Uniform: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8143/7107694535_617d9656e2.jpg After the College Season ended, Josh Burris signed with the Acadiana Cane Cutters (Lafayette, LA) of the Texas Collegiate Summer League. There he was also a 2-way player, but primarily a pitcher. He was listed as 5'11", 195 lbs at that point. He pitched in 9 Games (10.3 IP) recording 5 Saves, accumulated a 7.84 ERA, allowing 6 BB and striking out 14. His WHIP was 2.400 and the opponents' batting average was .367 BAA. All of the runs scored in 4 games, and he was near perfect in the last 5 games he pitched. As a batter he started switch-hitting in the summer league. In addition to OF he played some second base also, as he did during College. He hit .261/.358/.296 in 39 games (115 AB) scoring 16 runs and driving in 11 while walked 16 times was hit by a pitch 2 and struck out 27. He stole 23 of 27 bases and his fielding percentage was .946. He wore Uniform number 2 and he was named the 4th best prospect in the Texas Collegiate League by Baseball America. Burris in the Acadiana Cane Cutters uniform http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7223/7107694659_c6faedcab8_o.jpg Drafted and signed late by the Twins, Burris will focus on pitching. Will probably start the season in Elizabethton's bullpen and work to develop an off-spead pitch to go with his lively fastball and excellent curve. I had an opportunity to see him pitch this Spring Training at Fort Myers and it was a delight. Also he looks taller than last season's 5'11". I would say that he is probably 6'1" and close to 190 lbs. Excellent raw stuff, but had issues with command. Once that his harnessed he has a very high upside and could be one of the surprises in the organization. Anecdotally, I was watching an intersquad game between the Twins AAA/AA groups while Anthony Slama was pitching for the AAA squad and the sound of the ball hitting the catchers mitt at the field behind me made me turn and look and I moved away to watch Burris pitch. He was that good. You can follow Josh Burris on twitter @CurlyCurveball (appropriate handle) and he has a MySpace page, you can find here (with some HS prom pictures) I will update as soon as news happen. 22. The players sign autographs before the game. The best sections to sit are by the Miracle dugout (third base side), esp if you want autographs to be signed. There are really no bad seats in the ballpark as long as you are below the walkway and not on the bench seats (and those are not even that bad). Look for a section that the numbers are in the 100s vs the 200s. The ballpark is pretty full try more like 5-6 thousand not couple hundreds. The ballpark sits 8000 people or so. Scalping is legal (seems to be) in Florida so there will be many offers to buy tickets in the parking lot if you cannot find them at the ticket booth. I think parking is $3 or so and you park right at the ballpark.
  23. 1. No. Look at his peripherals. There are the same as every of his other mediocre season. He just got lucky in the SSS (18 IP, just 6 IP/game btw) and stranded 92% of the runners who reached base... Usually he strands 60some% so when that 30% scores the ERA will be closer to normal 2. Yes Yes Yes! Yesterday
  24. The Twins lost 99 games last season. They are on a pace to lose 111 games this season. Lots of agruments and fingers pointed against players. But... how much slack do you cut the manager and his coaches? And the interim GM who made this team. Methinks that they should be feeling their seat heating up pretty quickly. What do you think?
  25. Not that simple... Talking about a guy who was on a Cy Young level discussion because he used to miss bats and after the injury the pitching coach did not help him get back there because he was trying to make him a different pitcher And the same pitching coach has messed up other pitchers who were much better after they left the Twins. And that same pitching coach was a scrub when he pitched so his credibility is about as much as the hitting coach's about hitting
