Article: Twins Sign Closer Rodney To One-Year Deal
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I beg to differ. If Rodney implodes, the same way that Perkins imploded the second half of 2015, and has the same leash, it will cost the Twins potentially the post-season, like Perkins did back then. Crappy relievers cost ballgames. That's the risk here. Not the $. Allegedly the Twins are competing. -

I sure hope that he is not the closer. Won't mind him as a 7th-8th inning guy, but the Twins need better and younger end of the pen arms. And I hope they make a rule about wearing ballcaps the proper way. -
Article: Twins Sign RHP Michael Pineda
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Before he threw a pitch for the Yankees he tore his labrum and had surgery. Was out all of 2012 and in the minors in 2013. In the DL with shoulder issues and short minor league rehab assignments in 2014 and 2015 and healthy finally in 2016 and 2017 until he got his elbow issue. Velo went down after the shoulder surgery and close to 2011 last season. They must think that the shoulder is fine to pull the trigger, but I see this more of a rink than the elbow. On the other hand, given the fact that he got less than Swarzak $, he can be in the pen if it does not work out. -

Which would have been 15th highest (smack dead in the middle) on opening day 2017. That's the minimum they need to be. -
Article: Winter Meetings: Reliever Roulette
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A. The Twins paid Joe Nathan $11.25M per year from 2009-11. In today's market, that's about $15M equivalent B. Those 3 names listed are kinda plan D to me. Rodney? Seriously? I would not mind the Twins bringing Nicasio or Kintzler back as 7th or 8th inning guys. That's where they fit in a contender. C. Wade Davis is still around. Also, there are better options in trades. And the Twins need at least 3 back of the pen arms to contend deeply. Long ways to go, but there still is time. And it does suck that they passed on Morrow and few others. -

Better not, because they are not closers in teams that hope to go deep in a post-season. The Twins need at least a pitcher better than those- 169 replies

Cole makes sense, but If I was talking to the Pirates, it makes more sense to package him with MacCutchen and Rivero. Here is what I proposed.- 169 replies

Article: Official Winter Meetings Day 0 Thread

Here are their stats (the best in all is in bold.) As far age goes, other than Reed everyone else is 31-33 Morrow: 2.06 ERA, 1.55 FIP, 0.92 WHIP/.288 BABIP, 29.4 K%, 24.1 K-BB%, 97.7 mph FB Davis: 2.30 ERA, 3.88 FIP, 1.14 WHIP/.262 BABIP, 32.6 K%, 21.1 K-BB%, 94.3 mph FB Holland: 3.61 ERA, 3.72 FIP, 1.15 WHIP/.252 BABIP, 29.8 K%, 18.7 K-BB% , 93.5 mph FB Reed: 2.84 ERA, 3.67 FIP, 1.05 WHIP/.266 BABIP, 24.8 K%, 19.9 K-BB%, 92.3 mph FB Shaw: 3.52 ERA, 2.96 FIP, 1.21 WHIP/.311 BABIP, 23.4 K%, 16.3 K-BB%, 95.0 mph FB McGee: 3.61 ERA, 2.93 FIP, 1.10 WHIP/2.87 BABIP, 25.3 K%, 18.3 K-BB%, 93.5 mph FB I said that he was "probably" the best FA reliever available, but if you put the numbers down, it is not even close...- 66 replies

Gonsalves is of Portuguese origin, Gonzales is of Spanish. Different names from different origins. Likely lazy expert, in the manner of Bert as far as finding out name pronunciations.

I am still waiting for the smoke to clear before I start mine (just because of things that happened this week and will happen the next), but I see a really big omission here: Rainis Silva. The guy has always been the top defensive and game calling catcher in the system but could not hit his way out of a paper bag and was pushed to Cedar Rapids last season because of his game calling and D and got a .551 OPS. Back to EST and extensive work in his hitting and to Etown this season he hit .356/.446/.446. Something definitely clicked. I am doing my prospect lists a bit different (i.e. if someone has played in the majors, has graduated from my list - btw, you are missing Chargois as well ) so Garver is out. Pending further research of Banuelos and transactions, Silva would be my highest rated C. Has been hovering between 20-30 or so in my lists for a while and definitely will shoot up at top 15-20 or so. Kirriloff is way way way too high, but that has already been discussed. Interestingly enough, I think that that guy who dropped the most in your list (Jay) will likely be the guy who did so in mine as well. The one thing that is certain is that the Twins system is much better this year than last, despite not having many "flashy" prospects. I think that the top 20 or so will have a good chance of making it to the majors (and I mean from my list that does not include the ones who did,) which is more than most systems can claim. And Falvine are not done yet. I hope.

The core of this team is 23-26 years old. In trying to build a long-lasting competitive team, it makes no sense signing/extending/re-signing much older players, esp. if they are not at the superstar level and the DH position. Rooker will be the Twins' next first baseman, with maybe someone like Vargas (or a free agent you can sign to a 1yr contract) as a 1 yr stopgap. I think that Ryan Eades and Mark Appel have higher probabilities of being picked up than Kohl Stewart at this point. He has not shown that he is close

Wonder whether there would have been such a scrutiny if Jacob Pearce and David Banuelos were IFA and the Twins have given each $1 mil bonus. Because this is pretty much what they did, other than the $2M was opportunity vs. actual cost. I think that these guys come with some critical flaws, but I would venture an educated guess saying that they are better than any IFA available before July, including Atlanta's freed agents bunch. Pearce has Ben Revere written all over him. Similar speed, equally "strong" arm, bit less hit tool, bit more power tool. He also has second base written all over him. Banuelos is interesting. Allegedly he cannot hit. BA has Rene Rivera and Jose Molina as comparables. He hit well enough in college to be a First team All American. Had a .280/.369/.432 career line in college, which is not horrible. His defense is allegedly phenomenal. Started his pro career in ss A ball, which is a bit too high probably. Regardless, he can hit better than Navarretto and maybe Rortvedt Neither is a top 20 prospect for the Twins, but they are top 60 prospects, and the Twins as far as catchers go, had only 2 of those (Garver not included) Great move

Article: The Impending Rochester Rotation Crunch
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not necessarily. If he starts the season on the DL as soon as he is game ready, he will probably make some rehab starts likely with the Miracle and then with Chattanooga or Rochester. One important point: May has another option left, which can be useful to eg. help him build endurance in Rochester, even if he is not crisp with his pitches and would be a liability if in the majors (where it counts.)- 102 replies
