  1. That. Manship was with the big league team several times. He got a chance to prove himself and he never did. Compare that with Slama, for example and compare their numbers in the minors and figure out why Manship even got all those chances over Slama... Complaining that Manship did not get a chance as a starter is like complaining that Matt Tolbert did not get a chance as a first baseman (similar performance level btw; and actually Tolbert was more productive than Manship in the majors) I think it comes down to that starters and relievers are different animals. Some pitchers can do both, some can't. Just would like to have seen more of Manship as a starter. I'm betting some other team figures this out and he ends up starting somewhere. Of course, I could be wrong! You can make that argument about Slowey, Swarzak, Duensing, Robertson, Burnett, RA Dickey and a lot of others who have been starters and the Twins turned into relievers with mixed results

  3. Agreed about why Steinback and not the other 2 are bench coaches. Steinbach was definitely a surprise since his only coaching job has been at the high school level. This is a pretty big jump... Food for thought: If/when Gardy gets thrown out again during a game, I suspect that it will be Scotty still managing the team as usual..
  4. last time I checked this forum has been happy and aye-live (and killing it in ad revenues )
  5. Greinke should not and (thankfully) will be not singed by the Twins
  6. "clubhouse cancer" so I am sure that you made up your mind based on that characterization... The issue with Escobar (that one, not the Twins' one) is his play. Below par and Florimon is better. So that's that and as far as "clubhouse cancers" go, the manager of the millennium is the biggest...
  7. Well... could be a technicality: The Japanese have a draft. If he is drafted after he finishes high school is he considered an amateur if he does not sign with the Japanese team? Probably not but will be interested to find out. If he is considered an amateur then his bonus would count for the limit.
  8. I might be wrong, but I am pretty sure that the cap is for amateur international players. Thus the Japanese (and maybe even the Cubans) are excluded. Otani is a high-schooler and would be interesting to see how this will play...
  9. Interesting thought and it might worth its own discussion (and y'all know how I feel about the Twins' brass). That said: Several of the college relievers they drafted last draft have started before. The same with the 2011 draft. The old scout complaint that "a guy has only one pitch so he better be a reliever" should be mediated during player development (and the Twins practically never did that - that's part (like 20% - small) of the reason I am saying 'good riddance' to Rantz). So: the margins and definitions of a reliever and a starter are vary hairy. Couple fun Twins names to throw into the mix: Rick Aguilera and Brian Duensing. And they both fought (and one is still fighting) to be starters. Eddie and LaTroy gave the ghost up early. But, yeah, in my book at least 5 of the kids they drafted as relievers the last 2 drafts can be starters.
  10. Good to see Hicks produce this season. Got to try to dig some of the shots of him I took during last ST but he seemed like a man with a mission. Much focused. The SH argument has always been a valid argument. I think that he can be a Granderson type player if he gets his hitting going for that one side. That said, he is still young. He just turned 23 a few days ago.,
  11. Nobody this season... This team is not a single player away. And the biggest problem is the mind-set... you mention Scherzer. Here is how the Tigers got him: Max Scherzer & Phil Coke & Austin Jackson (their Number 2 SP, their closer and their lead off man) for Curtis Grandenson & Edwin Jackson in a 3 team trade with the Yankees and the Dbacks. I am convinced that Ryan would never ever pull anything like that.
  12. Ask him whether he holds himself accountable after a 96 loss season. Or, in other words, does he think that leading the team to 96 losses last season was successful enough to warrant removing the "interim" tag?
  13. Plenty of examples that the Twins did not start the best 5 out of Spring Training in recent seasons... 2006: Liriano had to start the season in the pen. 2007: (the year of Sir Sidney and Ramon Ortiz) Garza had to start the season in Rochester to pay his dues; 2008 (the year of Livan). Liriano has to stay in AAA forever so the super 2 clock will not click; 2011: Slowey was much better than Blackburn in ST, Blackburn gets to be in the rotation (because of the scholarship) . 2012: Marquis has an atrocious ST, he is not ready and he still wins a spot. So it is the norm vs the exception in Twinsland....
  14. wonder if he has ever seen him play.
  15. Indeed that is what matters: throwing hard with no pain. And Joe C's numbers are pretty conservative. Mackey indicates that PitchF/X had him at 93-95. He will get a chance this ST; up to him to grab it by the horns...
  16. I think that Hicks will develop some power at some point. Look at Carlos Gomez; some guys just take a little longer. The more and more I see Arcia play, the more and more I think "Kubel"; pre-knee injury Kubel. And this is a compliment.
  17. So part of the root cause of the Twins' problems is thankfully gone. A few more remain... Good to see a young 30 something replacing Rantz. At least he grew up with computers Are you even aware that computers are only as good ad the person programming them. The same data about players is available now as when when he started. You remain clueless what people of any age are capable of. Brock can give me a weeks vacation from this boar but Thyrloss's cluelessness about people older than thirty is sickening. hmmmm I suspect that you are referring to me with that "Thyrloss's"... Unfortunately, I got to confess that I have been personally so not clueless about people older than thirty for the best part of 2 decades now...
  18. Are you sure you understand what that word means? I think the word you were looking for was hyperbole. Nope. Marquis is younger and had a better season that Pavano could dream of, once he left AndyNGardy. The other 3 are about at the same level of decrepidness but they are not hurt. Seriously
  19. If one thinks that longevity in a position due to factors other than merit, should demand "respect" automatically, methinks THAT Is a pitiful (and mightly pathetic) outlook on life...
  20. Interesting quote in that linked Strib article about what Rantz has done to this organization, by the former interim GM: So part of the root cause of the Twins' problems is thankfully gone. A few more remain... Good to see a young 30 something replacing Rantz. At least he grew up with computers
  21. In all seriousness Jason Marquis, Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez and Livan Hernandez have a higher probability of being decent pitchers in 2013 than Pavano. Pavano is old and hurt. He should just hang them up.
  22. um this could have been true other than a little detail: When he was young and in the Twins' minors Kirby was about as "chubby" as Ben Revere is So file that with the other suburban legends
  23. penny pinching might: - make this an 85 loss team - be the last nail in the Gardy and Ryan coffins...
  24. Upside? What if we've already seen it? I think we just have to consider Liriano as one of those players who had great potential but could never put it together, for whatever reason. That's hardly uncommon - there are more of those than there are aces. Well.... truth of the matter: he did put it together. He was the best pitcher in baseball in 2006. Then stuff happened. Cannot forget that.
  25. Here is the thing: The Twins have not won a WS since 1991 (this is 21 years ago). The Marlins have won 2 in that span with build up and burn down plans...
