  1. At some point last (off)season when the Twins were ready to send Plouffe to the OF, I compared him to Cuddyer. I think that I did him a dis-service because he is a much better player than Cuddyer was and his ceiling is higher than Cuddyer's. About that "thumb" injury: It was probably worse than it seemed. Plouffe at some point on Twitter admitted that he was undergoing TENS (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) treatments. These are the type of treatments people with neurological issues (like dropped foot) receive. So he did have some nerve issues and probably lost feeling there at least. I suspect that there were some issues in grabbing a bat tight or even a ball tight to throw it.
  2. Methinks that the team in question is hiring an analyst/statistician/sysadmin/DBA all in one. From that description:
  3. If the Twins need to clean house in AAA it should start with the likes of 35 year old plus had beens (Elarton) and never had beens (Lake). De Vries, Walters and Deduno do have some value. And I would rather see May in Rochester (and it might happen the way TR is talking) than the 2 mentioned above and Redmond. DeVries Deduno and Walters are about the same age as Redmond (28-29) so you are not getting much (like more prime years) by replacing one of them with Redmond.
  4. Interesting stuff but it makes about zero sense This argument misses one single really important reality: When the HP ump is crouched behind the catcher, he just sees the trajectory of the ball and he is totally blocked seeing the catcher's mitt. So he really calls balls and strikes based on events that happen before the ball hits the catcher's mitt. So this whole argument is kinda BS. Catcher might be framing a pitch for the CF camera, but it is not the CF camera that calls balls and strikes
  5. The question should have been phrased more like: "would it make sense for the Twins to sign him instead of a 36 year old (Elarton) pitcher who just doesn't have it any more or a 35 year old catcher who wants to be a pitcher (Lane) or the usual independent league crowd that makes its home in Minnie" Then I would get it and would say "maybe" (But still would rather see the kids up)
  6. Chris Colabello and (this might sound like a surprise to many) Deibi Romero (and he can play third and first and some OF)
  7. Call me a cynic, but Clement reminds me a lot of Sean Burroughs (minus the eating from garbage cans before detoxing drama)
  8. Butera's scholarship got renewed for 2013 when the Twins decided to offer him arbitration and pay him $700K instead of refusing and signing him to a MiLB contract with a ST invite (which would have been the thing to do.) He is not going anywhere, unless Gardy goes.
  9. Podsednik? I watched him play about 15 times last 2 seasons (once in ST 2012 against the Twins) when he was with the IronPigs. His fielding skills are still decent but not as good as Mastroianni's at this point and his hitting is Buterrible. I'd pass
  10. This is an interesting discussion. Wish there were internets a while back, so the similar discussion on whether Cal Ripken is too big to be a shortstop would be googleable I think that he will probably end up smaller than Miguel Cabrera and definitely smaller than the Panda. Whether he grows as a fielder is more important than size. Travis Harrison (albeit a bit smaller, but equally stiff) is in the same equation and with a slew of OFs coming up, you cannot have 2 first basemen. And if Kennys Vargas hits in A+/AA this season the way he hit in A last season, there would be a third name in the equation. This is a good problem to have and I think it is just too early to tell (or even ask this question...) We shall find out in time.
  11. That seems just about right for Gardy and with Diamond pitching if healthy. Ideal for me : 1. Hicks CF 2. Benson LF 3. Mauer C 4. Plouffe 3B 5. Parmelee 1B 6. Doumit DH 7. Arcia RF 8. Dozier 2B 9. Florimon SS Harden SP. This assumes Morneau and Willingham are traded for prospects. Hopefully one of them is a middle infielder who would start in place of either Florimon or Dozier. But it will happen when pigs fly.
  12. I think that you missunderstood me. I am hopeful. I am always hopeful esp this time of the year. But the last 2 seasons were (as I said 3 posts up there) cumulatively the second worst back to back seasons in Twins' history by a single win. Then the cherry on top was blaming those to Jerry and Stelly (also mentioned above). Thus the glass not only half empty but "shattered to pieces". No reversal at all. Hopefulness for tomorrow and truthful assessment of yesterday (and today) can co-exist...
  13. This time of year it is about hope. All teams are tied, every one has the same chance to win the world series. There still is a flicker of hope. Two seasons of miserable performance (cumulatively the second worst back to back season in Twins' history by a single win) plus 21 since the last trophy, tends to make people less hopeful. And more and more people are having negative outlooks. At least more and more people are trying to look into root causes and try to see why things happen. This is a positive. I think that every single fan should want their team to win every single season. And if their team plainly sucks, they should be upset. And if their sucky team does nothing to improve, blames the last 2 seasons on Jerry and Stelly and the people who drove the team to this condition have no accountability, they should really be wondering about the direction this team is going... But there is still hope. Twins Win! (but otherwise TR, and Gardy and Andy and Co have to go)
  14. Despite the fact that he is the only person of the 2012 rotation who is pretty much guaranteed a position in the 2013 rotation, this does not make him a "de facto ace". Based on who the Twins signed so far, I'd put Harden, Pelfrey and Worley ahead of Diamond at this point... So, the de charta ace is Harden who has about as many question marks as Diamond on returning to form following surgery... We shall find who the de facto ace is after Spring Training. Heck, Gibson might be it, seems healthier than the bunch these days...
  15. They already have 6 years of control. He is 25. So they control up to his age 31 season, which is just past his prime. No need to control post prime years.
  16. This is kinda a pet peave of mine Innings pitched is about as meaningful stat as minutes played in basketball. It is manager's choice. Gardenhire tend to let their veterans (see Pavano) go over imaginary limits despite the number of pitches thrown, while limit the innings of rookies despite how well they are doing. Quality matters more than quantity, unless a pitcher takes himself out of the game (and they don't)
  17. Like that, but I'd raise you: 2012 Capps = 2013 Correia = 2011 Pavano.
  18. I beg to disagree. My biggest issue (maybe) with TR is that he does not have a consistent plan, but he does half rear end reactionary moves to say that he did something: He trades his 2 CFs for a 25 and two 23 year old (in 2013) pitchers with upside (excellent), so the Twins can compete in 2014-15ish, but keeps his aging first baseman and left fielder, extends his aging DH/C, signs Blackburn's reincarnation (Correia) to a 2 year deal overpaying, and signs a couple of SPs close to 30 with lots of health questions. If this were a plan, it is made by a schizophrenic individual.
  19. Not sure where you are located (and the logistics work the same way for June and July) but it is crazy hot and humid in the summer over there. Like 95+ and extreme humidity. Something to keep in mind.
  20. Little known fact about Pedro: His breakthrough season was 1997 with the Expos when he had the most strikeouts a season by a RHP since Walter Johnson. He contributes his success to his new found change up. The guy who taught him that change up is the same guy who taught Randy Johnson and Johan Santana theirs: New Twins' bullpen coach Bobby Cuellar. He was the Expos Pitching Coach then. All three pitchers mentioned here have publicly said that they would not be where they are without Cuellar. I will withhold judgement on Berrios until after I see him this Spring Training. As far as Slowey goes (btw, new Miami Marlin), a better comparable is Greg Maddux
  21. I am a huge Anthony Slama fun, and hope he makes the team out of Spring Training, but this is for Starting Pitching
  22. There is an additional complication about this whole age thing, which definitely works on the players' favor: For Dominicans, MLB goes and does a whole series of tests and examines a whole bunch of official records including birth certificates, hospital records, school records etc. MLB has access to those records (and the player's family) in the Dominican. They do not have any access to any of that in Cuba. Matter of fact, they are not even allowed to set foot on Cuba. Major difference. That's why Livan and his brother claimed to be as young as they are with no issues.
  23. Thanks. Yeah I do know the value of each level is way oversimplified. To actually try to give a proper value for each level, I would need to do some sort of regression analysis of the last 10 years or so by plugging in the numbers of all Ps and see how they did on each level relative to MLB and create an average value for each level (actually would be better if it is per league; because I suspect that the Pacific league pitchers are having a harder time than those of the International League.) That is probably the best way of doing it. But it does take time and computing power... What I am doing is a quick and dirty approximation (and easy ) Yeah. I assume that players spent about half of their time in each level. Weight would be better. Again, quick and easy Age is taken care in the equation, since axPE is a number where xPE is divided by age and multiplied by level value times 7.
  24. Actually, since your favorite player is a non-roster invitee, the earlier you go the better the chances you have to see him with the big team. But that would be just practicing because President's day (the 18th) is 5 days before their first game (the 23rd in Sarasota against the Orioles). The Twins will be practicing mostly at the North East most practice field (next to the Stadium) with occasional practices in the Stadium and the other fields. You might get to see some scrimmages as well; these are pretty fun.
  25. Indeed. The traffic is an issue and great point about coming early. I guess I never been at the ballpark later than 10AM because I want to catch the minor leaguers play and some Twins taking BP outside the ballpark before the game. Great point about the shade. Last year temps were close to 90 in late March. Last season they did not sell standing room tickets. Not sure whether the RF walk space will be ready this season. If it is, I bet that will be standing room only. They do sell $10-12 tickets at the grass area at short RF.
