  1. Totally unrelated with the topic, because I just saw the pic posted with this... Do you all realize that only Mauer and Morneau are left from the players in that game? (Perk was in AAA - begrudgingly- and Duensing did not make the team until the season after)
  2. well.. do you remember the OF of Delmon-Cuddyer(CF)-Kubel? That would be a fun comparison
  3. Fun. But hold it for one thing: If Arcia will have more of an impact than Hicks and Thomas will make the team, does this mean that Thomas ( who almost killed Meyer btw) will be the Twins starting CF? An OF of Willingham-Thomas-Parmelee would be very very interesting
  4. Better than Slama? (other than the injury part) Methinks not. Slama: 2012: 1.24 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 13.9 K/9, 3.11 K/BB 2011: 1.28 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 13.6 K/9, 2.63 K/BB Wood: 2012: 2.19 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 8.6 K/9, 2.91 K/BB 2011: 3.49 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 6.2 K/9, 2.27 K/BB (and these include Slama's injury)
  5. Played in College; secondary to FB. Pitched. I could never hit worth anything. Really. Not even a softball. After college (Grad School and work and life really takes off ), I kept pitching in summer leagues and in city beer leagues till 2 years ago when finally my UCL gave up and I figured that this north of 40 is no need to keep beating a dead horse. Coached kids in one of my local colleges (Head Coach was city league teammate) in a totally unofficial capacity but it was lots of fun. And I think that the kids had a good time too. I got into baseball as an adult in College. Never grabbed a baseball before in my life. I just felt that standing on a mound feeling the ball on your hand and thinking about delivering the perfect pitch would be an amazing zen moment and would totally balance my nutty all cajones out SS FB experience. And it was. And, frankly, that moment, when you get the sign, and the head nodes and the hand grips the ball in the glove and you take the next breath before the windup is a total zen moment. And I still miss it. But: one could have never played an inning of baseball and still have an opinion (or even manage a major league team or be a GM, plenty of those and some successful)
  6. Another thing regarding sample size: the sample size of someone's performance in ST as reflected by numbers is actually greater than the sample size of someones' performance as reflected by "scouting opinions" because scouts do not see every single pitch and every single swing a player has. Chew on that...
  7. How about latitudinal data instead? Small Sample Size alright, but it is better than non-sample size and making (subjective) decisions based on perceived "stuff" and the way "the ball comes out of ones' hand". There are some players who are better than what the scouts thing. If you don't believe me, ask Mr Slama whose performance in actual games that mattered mirrored that of ST and really has been against Scouts' opinions. And some players, mind you, do better in ST because they play every day. If they are used as once every third day PHs or every 4th day starters (Luke Hughes is a prime example, so is former Twin Garrett Jones btw) often fail. Some players need regular time to produce. And most of them get that during Spring. Some pitching data mater a whole lot. Believe me. If you cannot find the plate in ST and you are throwing ball after ball after ball, you will likely not find it during regular season. And if you consistently miss the strike zone it does not matter who is at bat whether it is a little leaguer or Miguel Cabrera. If you can steal every time you go for it in ST, you will likely have a great SB% during the season. If you cannot get to fly balls in ST, you likely will not get to fly balls during the season. So, it's a combination. And you cannot take data away when there are close fights because otherwise your opinions are subjective. It has to be a balance. Otherwise, let them make the roster now.
  8. I think that the Twins just do not have many options here. If not Florimon, then who? 55 year old Carroll? Dozier? Escobar? Danny S? Beresford? Good Rum? Who?
  9. It is not only scouting... it is player development in the minors as well. Someone can have incredible ability but if he has flaws that do not get fixed early and often (Shooter Hunt anyone) forget about it. Luck too. Good medical stuff as well. Identifying talent and pushing it up the ladder fast. Lots of factors.
  10. Check him tip the pitches with his back leg Look at when the back leg comes up vis-a-vis his shoulder crossing and how high the foot gets, and look at what pitches he is throwing Interesting.
  11. I think Josh Roenicke should be in the conversation there as well. Arguably he was Colorado's best 'pen guy last season and was a large outcry in Denver when the Twins picked him up. Casey Fien did OK last season but only in 30some innings of .229 BABIP and lots of them during the expanded roster time; he is about to return to his average self. Tim Wood would have had a hard time making the team if his first name was Kerry or Travis as well. Did ok with the Pirates AAA last season, but Slama has done better consistently. I just think that all the 'pen positions after Perkins, Burton and Duensing (now that Swarzak is hurt - and I don't believe that he will be back that soon; bruised ribs are not an easy thing) are wide open. Throw in De Vries (who was a lights out closer in AA for a while btw), Deduno, Perdomo, etc and the competition for those pen spots will be fun.
  12. It is not about wanting to win the World Series. Of course they do. This is not what I am arguing here. It is about setting the bar of what success and "winning" are, up to there. Setting expectations. Saying that every season their goal (not their want, or they'd love to or whatever, because every team does) is to win the World Series... If the bar is set lower, mediocrity will "meet expectations" and everyone will be happy. BTW, this quote is from Mauer, and not Ryan or Gardy. Still waiting. Also, if the post-season were a crabshoot, the Twins would have won a World Series in the 00s and have been in at least another one. They haven't. On the other hand, look and the Giants and the Cards on relative post-season to WS success. Not a crabshoot.
  13. Look at the Mauer quotes. He said that he wanted to get "back" (like win a weak division and then one and out) instead of saying that he wanted to bring a World Series trophy again to the Twin Cities. Are you not bothered by that? I am. And unless Twins' fans are bothered by the attitutes of managers/GMs/Owners/Presidents/Stars that mediocrity is ok, the Twins will never win (a World Series) again. And that is that. I'd love to hear someone associated with the Twins to say that: Yes we are striving to win the World Series. (again. Last person who said it out loud was Andy McPhail) Find me a single reference of Gardy and/or Terry saying that their goal is to win the World Series and I will shut up. Good luck.
  14. I cannot wait to see the kid next month in Fort Myers. One thing I am puzzled about is that 93 mph. After he was drafted I do remember the scouting reports saying that his fastball (four seamer) was 92-95. And reports from E-town were similar. Of course, it is Spring and he might not be pitching all out yet, but still surprised.
  15. Yeah, Ryan has to re-capture the success of his multiple World Series winners. Sad to hear those quotes from Mauer: Unless you strive to win it all, you will never win it. If you strive for the mediocrity that the Twins were this Millennium (which, yes is better than the previous horrid Ryan years) you will never win. I wonder how many New Yorkers (since that article was published there) would love it, if their Yankees had the same results as the Twins this Millennium.
  16. Make it 90. It was in 1919 and 1920.
  17. Um... Try a manager/GM/owner: The Twins' Franchise very own Clark Griffith (he managed the senators from 1912-1920; had a minority stake since 1912 and became a single owner for the last 2 seasons he managed the team,) uncle and adopted father of Calvin Griffith who moved the Twins to Minnesota. (the concept of GM did not exist then, but owners had GM responsibilities as well)
  18. His team has always quit in the post-season. Always. Post-season record is a very important factor as well (and I don't buy the "crapshoot" analogy; were it one, the Twins would have won one World Series and been in at least 2 others this millennium. And they didn't; and I cannot help pointing the finger for that at the Manager of the Millennium, esp the season they had both the MVP and the Cy Young award winners.) Firing a manager, a general manager, a coach gives a message to the fans and the players that the people who are running the team care. The people who are running the Twins apparently are fine with the way this team has been going and by the fact that this team has not won a world series since 1991. I have a problem with that. Maybe they have been fine when a mediocre product was selling tickets. Now that it is not, I hope they are not...
  19. Number one starter in the Twins (and a lot of other teams) is not the same as an Ace, since Santana was traded...
  20. I think that the Twins should fill the bench spot from the inside. Absolutely no reason to bring anyone that old (other than selling tickets if that is Thome) where they are. Colabello/Ramirez/Romero probably have more pop than Thome and the Lees at this point. Give them a chance.
  21. I stand corrected, my friend (why do I feel like I am in a conclave? ) I got it that the "Now" on the title was the cause of most of the objection. Wish it were "yesterday", which would had been more passable albeit less "immediate" and more "nonsensical" in February 2013. What needed to happen after 2012 did not happen. Hope that the Twins win it all in 2013, like all of us here and that there is a parade down University Avenue in October (hope they have that there too). But if that does not happen and they suck, they have to go. Period.
  22. Seriously: Ronnie's W-L record with the Twins is worse than Chilly's record with the Vikes. Seriously. And I am not talking post-season. Just regular season. One of these two became the Manager of the Millennium because a totally sucky team (and TK was at the helm when the turn happened in 2000) happened to be mediocre while he was at the helm (other than the last 2 seasons, in which the team sucked more than it ever did in 2 seasons in a row) while the other one was ran out of town because a mediocre team could not make it to the Superbowl. The last time the Twins won was in 1991. Then 'roid A's happened, strike in 94 happened and TR happened. And the team hasn't won for 21 years Gee... how unspeakable to ask for the removal of the people who are ru(i)nning this team... (and yeah, it is Molitor and not Moliter or whatever the OP said up there, but what matters more is that TR said that this Hall of Famer is not "a good fit" to be a coach for this team, while he got Steinbach to be a bench coach after he coached his son's little league team to a championship... Really.)
  23. kind of a detail but Blackburn will not be ready until June. I just hope that Harden is healthy and ready and he got it, so he can be this team's ace. Otherwise these Twins are not going anywhere
  24. Here is another one in the same set: The transformation of Carlos Gutierrez (It is Mike Tonkin)
