  1. I just do not know many pitchers who went elsewhere and did not do well, unless injured. The other list, the one of Twins' pitchers who did better elsewhere is long. And I am talking about starting pitchers mostly. Can you name any names of players who did worse after they left the Twins, with the exception of injuries and aging? And I really mean the Anderson years.
  2. This unfortunately is true of most pitchers who were paraded in the Twins rotation last season. Come spring training, if he is among the top 5 Twins starting pitchers, he should be in Minneapolis. All depends on whether they will sign someone and who will that be. Right now his stuff is pretty much ahead of mostly everyone in the organization as is. And I'd rather see pitchers who throw 88 mph breaking stuff on the dirt on occasion (hint hint) rather than 88 mph "fast"balls down the middle.
  3. 3 years. No $ talk
  4. Totally agree. Trade deadline or off-season the earliest, but he has to be good at Fort Myers.
  5. That ^ Most of these guys will not be targeted at the MLB portion of the draft but at the AAA portion, which means being on the Rochester roster protects them. I have a hard time seeing any team give a 25-man roster spot to Polanco or Kepler. Too raw. Or Wimmers. Too hurt. Vargas maybe because of his power. The kind of players that teams might select in the major league portion of the draft are pitchers for situational relievers in the majors (Darnell, Dean, Achter - think Pressly) and maybe to fill some holes, but the semi-MLB ready players the Twins have (Romero, Ramirez etc,) were all free agents and could have been signed by a team if was aggressive. I'd put Vargas on the roster. Switch hitting 40 HR power does not grow on trees. That leaves the Twins with 3 open spots. And I'd switch Darnell with Hermsen, just because. The rest are fine on the AAA roster. Maybe take Colabello off too. Another thing that one needs to consider, is that, because this is the roster shakeup time and people are taken off and going through waivers, the Twins would need a spot or two open for their annual waiver claim dumpster diving...
  6. That's a name that nor really mentioned among the Twins top prospects, but is a guy who is about to surprise a lot of people next season in the Midwest league...
  7. Exactly. And I don't know where LaVelle came with that idea...
  8. Here is the thing with Kepler: -First base for the Twins is spoken for until 2019. -Walker, Harrison, DJ Hicks and Vargas at this point seem to have better bats for the DH/1B/OF types. And they have more power than Kepler. And probably better hit tool. So I really think that Kepler is a sell high type of guy...
  9. Just agreed with the Rockies for an one year $2.5 M contract to be their closer.
  10. How about all 3, but I'd take Kazmir ahead of all of them...
  11. Yeah. Rickey is a good comparison. But better defense and better concentration than Rickey. The thing is that in the older days they use to run more and get kids up in the majors young, so Rickey's records will stand.
  12. Rosario had around .770 OPS in New Britain. He is a doubles hitter. This is fine in the middle infield but not at corner outfield. There are fewer .770 OPS middle infielders than corner outfielders. Agree about having the best 9 on the field, but likely Rosario will not be among the best 3 OFs. As far as Arcia goes, there is something called learning skills and developing. Koskie and Morneau were brutal on the field at first. Brutal. But a 23 year old can learn better and be more adequate than a 33 year old with a beaten up body. So there is an age cutoff before you make someone a full time DH.
  13. 30 MLB teams 30-40 Cy Young winners. Mean ( = Mediocre) is 1-2 winners every 15-20 years. The Twins are the definition of Mediocre as far as this goes. Bell curve. The majority of the teams are mediocre, and few are good and few are bad. Most fans are not alright with mediocrity and want their team to strive for excellence. For some Twins' fans (and the team management and the local press) jumping from horrible to mediocre seems to be enough unfortunately. Even going back to horrible seems to be ok...
  14. If "all right" is to develop a single Cy Young winner or even contender in a decade plus, then they have done "all right". In my book, 1 Cy Young winner in 10-20 years is mediocre.
  15. Arcia is way to young to be a DH and Rosario way more valuable in middle infield to be an OF. I'd rather have Arcia at LF. He is a better fielder already than the starting LFs the Twins have had for half a decade (easy to do, if those were Delmon and Willingham...) I just do not see Buxton in the bigs yet. I want to see him against AA pitchers and he did not do that hot against them in AFL... If he breaks through in New Britain there may be a September call up, but 2015 is more realistic.
  16. It's a little more complicated than adding and subtractive WAR "Wins". One has to look at the losses of last season. If, let's say (I don't know how many were, this is hypothetical,) a third of the losses (that would be 32 games or so for the Twins) were of the 2 runs or less type or in extra innings, one would think that by getting better pitching and improving their hitting they can win half of those (50-50 chance). That would be a net 16 games or an 82-80 record. If the number of close losses is higher, the higher probability of winning. It is not even that simple. You got to put every game in a curve, right a pretty complex algorithm and overlay potential replacements (and potential changes in the competition) to get to a closer guess. But my point is that a better pitcher can affect a 2 run loss but not a 10 run loss... Edit: I went back and counted. The Twins lost 38 games with a differential of 2 runs or less in 2013.
  17. You got to add Levi Michael into the equation some place too. Likely New Britain. But Polanco is a better prospect than both Michael and Goodrum at this point, so he should be starting at short. La Troy Hawkins? Can he start? (rhetorical question.) The Twins have way too many bullpen guys and more in the pipeline at this point
  18. Terry Ryan v.2 has a worse record than Bill Smith. And Bill Smith did not make the Gomez, Hardy and Capps trades, the Nishioka acquisition and the ill-advised contract extensions to Blackburn, Pavano etc by himself. He is not a baseball person. He made them because of recommendations by Gardy (n Andy) and the Front Office scout people. How Smith is to blame and all of those others who actually made the recommendations are not, is a mystery. If you blame Smith for 2011 you have to blame Ryan for 2012 and 2013 and give Smith credit for 2010. And as far as who "destroyed" teams, Ryan is the one who "destroyed" the World Champion teams that MacPhail had built. But he never gets any heat for that (or for his role in the contraction business.) Teflon.
  19. Totally agree, but for some reason, for some people Ryan, Gardenhire and Anderson & Co can do nothing wrong. And I don't know a single other organization in baseball that would have kept any of the three after the 99+96+96 in a row.
  20. Need a control for this experiment: Do the same exercise for the 2012 team and the new pitchers in the 2013 team and see if the wins you would come for the 2013 team will match what they got. Nope.
  21. Only Eduardo Escobar remains from the ill-advised Liriano trade now.
  22. Well... Yes. But, if you don't do that (and some teams have proven that you can build World Champions via free agency) you got to follow the Cardinals' and Tigers' model and play young players. Look at Wacha this season. Verlander was in the majors the year after he was drafted. In those teams Gibson and Meyer (and not the likes of Hernandez, Albers et al) would have started for the Twins last season in the majors. I'd give you the injury concerns. But this season, Meyer is healthy. He should be in the starting 5. But the Twins do not do that either. Cannot have it both ways, otherwise you do not build winners.
  23. You can view the page at http://twinsdaily.com/content.php?r=2473-One-Starting-Pitcher-the-Twins-should-target-in-a-trade
  24. Not quite... The description clearly indicates that this mound was used "since March 2004"... Not much history there, unless you count the Santana years
  25. This is a lot like the Tim Wood contract last off-season. He was handed a 40-man spot too. The Twins can remove him from the roster tomorrow if necessary, they still have this ability plus there are some others (BJ Hermsen) who can move off as well.
