  1. Here is the other thing: What is more of a danger to society: A. Having a racist bigot open his mouth on social media B. Having a drunk drive, get arrested for DUI and going to jail The drunk criminal still has a job...
  2. If it were up to me, I'd pick the starting pitcher with the highest upside who is closest to the majors. It is still way to early to even think about who that might be come next June. If the draft was held today, as far as I am concerned, this would be a high school (and not a College) pitcher who has rarely been mentioned in 2016, but is about to get a lot of helium in 2017, RHP Alex Scherff. Fastball already at 98+ with plus movement, above average to plus change, and a slider and curve. But let's see what happens till June. Oh, one more thing: Forget about slots, bargains and being spendthrift. The Twins got to pay and pay well for top talent the next few seasons to get this team to respectability...
  3. That's awful news. He was expecting his first child as well... Wishing his family the best under the circumstances...
  4. Hold it for a second. Narrowed to 5 is much different than the title of the referred piece ("could stop at five) and way much different than the line before the last in the relevant piece in the linked article: It’s still possible that list of outside interviews will grow. So really no news here...
  5. Easy one. Same thing with Tommy Milone and Trevor Plouffe: Not tender.
  6. Mixed feelings here: a. What he said is pretty disgusting and insensitive. Any way you cut it, as far as I am concerned b. Unfortunately this is a fairly common view in this country. Heck, a particular presidential candidate has pretty much said the same (if not worse) in the campaign trail and still about 45% of Americans say that they will vote for him c. Last time I checked this is the United States of America and even bigots have the right to speak their minds, no matter whether we agree or not, without loosing their jobs. d. Expect the players union to sue for wrongful suspension (and likely win.)
  7. And, I wish the ones who are criticizing Sano about his weight, did the same for other Twins' players, like Perkins. Just sayin'
  8. What we heard last year this time was someone (who thankfully is no longer with the organization) saying that he was planing to convert him to corner outfielder... Unless my memory is failing me...
  9. Totally agree about the expectations. I am talking about potential future. Do you remember Juan Morillo, in that rainy evening in Baltimore, half a dozen seasons ago? I swear, that's what he reminds me of when he pitches... (and if the Rochester radar gun is like Fort Myers', Houston we've got problems...)
  10. Am I the only one who has seen enough of Pat Light?
  11. International free agents, including young Cubans. Only way to do it in a rebuilding team. Or overpaying for the 2017 draft and used as tax money... Or to put in the bank and compound interest to extend Sano when that is needed...
  12. Kinda feel cruel doing this, but (let's say that I even accept that defense can save 0.5 a run off ERA) that would make them have the 27th best ERA in the majors instead of the 29th best. just sayin'
  13. Would Santana plus Stewart plus Gordon get you that?
  14. Ricky Nolasco Career K/BB: 3.41 just sayin'
  15. Nope. But that was not the argument I was answering. The argument was that having Santiago instead of Nolasco and Berrios instead of Milone and Duffey will make the Twins a better team. Nolasco (4.03 ERA and 1.121 WHIP btw in California) is a better pitcher than Santiago this season, and there is no reason that he will not be the next season. Yes Berrios will improve, but one improved Berrios will not turn this team into a contending team, and you got to figure out Santana's regression And if they do not turn into contenders, they better rebuild instead of wasting the value that Santana or Gibson might have and wasting opportunity cost as well by keeping Santiago around who is a perfect number 5 pitcher in a competing team in a good day and will cost $10m a year. A rebuilding team does not need that.
  16. I guess having another young pitcher (let's say Gonsalves or Jay) who can learn at the job is more valuable to me than having a tutor; but of course you need a decent pitching coach to do what Santana does. Rebuilding teams need to determine who is part of their future, because they will not compete in 2017 and 2018. Nobody who is not going to be with the Twins in 2019 should be with them in 2017, because of a. losing the opportunity for a decent return in a trade and b. the opportunity cost for someone like Gonsalves or Jay being in the minors...
  17. Here: No Nolasco (5.13 ERA) plus Santiago (6.20 ERA) no Milone (5.51 ERA) and no Duffey (6.39 ERA) plus Berrios (8.88 ERA) Methinks that the ERA with the replacements is worse...
  18. Indeed, that's why, since the Twins will not be seriously competing in the remaining period of the contracts of Santana and Dozier (and likely before Gibson, but for sure before Santiago becomes a free agent,) makes no sense keeping the above
  19. I think that if we should be able to even pencil in names for the rotation right now, that means that the new head of baseball will not be doing his job... This is a team that is projected to lose 103 games, and primarily because of its pitching. The 2017 rotation should look totally different and this team should rebuild. The core of this team is at about 23-24, so everyone over 27 should go. This includes Santana, Gibson, and Santiago. The last 2 are at their prime and the first one past his and coming from a season that screams "sell high" as much as Dozier's does. You cannot do much about Hughes, but you cannot count on him. If he does not come back, insurance will mitigate the loss, if he does, he will be a gift (hopefully wrapped for another team or anchoring the pen...) Duffey has done everything he can to show that he does not belong in a major league rotation, but he could be good out of the pen, where he should be in 2017 Who would I pencil in? Nobody. I'd acquire 2 arms at least at the projected Berrios level who are at the AA/AAA level for Dozier, Santana, Gibson, Stewart, Gordon or whomever below A+ and/or over 27 will make it happen, and would let: those 2, Berrios, Mejia, May, Gonsalves, Jay, Romero, Jorge and (Randy) Rosario fight it out in Spring Training. The rest (other than May (*) who has no options) can start in Rochester. That's 10 arms. (*) this might sound that I am penciling in May, but if he does not work, he can go to the pen... That's how teams rebuild
  20. Dozier and Gonsalves would not be enough for Fernandez by himself. Also, the Marlins are competing. And makes no sense for a competing team to get rid of an ace to get a second baseman. Fernandez' price tag will probably start with Berrios and Buxton and would need a couple more high end prospects (I am not talking Walker) to make it happen...
  21. De Leon has seen a lot of press. Not sure that he will be available. I think that the Yankees might be a better partner. Dozier for: RHP Chance Adams, LHP Nestor Cortes and C Kyle Higashioka Nobody they cannot part with or their fanbase will scream, but I really like all 3 at this point (and more than I like De Leon, who might be Phil Hughes 2.0.)
  22. Great stuff! Here is who I would have had: I'd go with Lewin Diaz at 1B. His .928 OPS vs .792 for Weil is too much to ignore, esp since Diaz is 1.5 years younger than his league average while Weil is 1.5 years older than his. Third base, I'd have Niko Goodrum who with a .816 OPS (vs .755 for Molina) had the season of his life. At SS, I might consider the 9 games that Javier played a SSS for his 1.054 OPS, but Brandon Lopez' .814 OPS looks better than Gordon's .721, bloodlines, first round pick or not. So Lopez would be it for me. At OF, Palka and Wade are fine, but Granite and his .729 OPS is not. As a matter of fact, there are (in addition to Palka and Wade) 10 more OFs who did not make the majors with better OPS than Granite and none more deserving than Jaylin Davis (.864). DH, yes Walker would work, but Travis Blackenhorn (.850 OPS vs. .784) had a better season. Cannot argue against Romero, Gonsalves or Hildenberger. However, Andrew Vasquez (1.41 ERA, 0.913 WHIP, 11.97 K/9) had a better season than Theophanopoulos (2.20 ERA, 1.163 WHIP, 11.57 K/9) Very close, but still better.
  23. That 1997 team needs an asterisk because it was a World Champion team. After winning, the Marlins decided to have a full rebuild and dismantle that team. The average age of the 1997 team was 28.5 for hitters and 27.5 for pitchers and dropped to 25.4 and 24.5 for 1998. And a rebuilding team needs few years to stabilize. There is the progression of the Marlins (in Wins) 1998 - 54 1999 - 64 2000 - 79 2001 - 76 2002 - 79 2003 - 91 World Champions I'd take 5 years from 100 L to a World Championship any day. If the Twins did the right thing and rebuilt in 2012, that could had been next season for the Twins... Unlike that young Marlins' team that lost 108, the 2016 average ages for the Twins is 27.1 for hitters and 28.4 for pitchers. That is the problem there... If you go back to the last 100+ L Twins' team, the 1982, you will see that it was the only time the Twins have rebuilt seriously. The average ages for that team were 25.3 for hitters and 25.5 for pitchers. And like the Marlins, we all know what they did in 5 seasons...
  24. There is another set of number for Sano there, that sheds light to how much one should believe the rest: He is listed as: 6-3 / 195
