  1. My first venture onto ESPN was on the Braves board my freshman year of college. By the time BYTO came about, I had done a tour as a moderator on the Braves board. I remember ruffling plenty of feathers as I was a Braves fan, but then I'd discuss being at a ton of Twins games (hey, it was the late 90s/early 2000s...$5 on a Wednesday got you a ticket and 3 hot dogs!) and generally just talked baseball, and I've been the token NL guy in the room for nearly 20 years now! That 4 number begins my age this fall...
  2. I won't get into the whole story, but my housemate when Klobuchar ran the first time ended up being the baseball card in the spokes of her tires. She used the case against him, which was completely wrong and ended up nearly completely thrown out on appeal, as a launching pad in her campaign, specifically as a champion for women. I was one of few very credible witnesses to the events in question, and I was not once called in the initial case. I ended up in South Dakota by the time the appeal came around, and my recorded testimony was a big chunk of what got the case overturned. She had my initial statement, which showed her case to be bunk, and still chose to pursue the case due to the publicity of his job at the time, a career he loved and ended up dismissed from. She pursued the case with an agenda, suppressing witness statements that had no business being suppressed (she flat-out lied about the nature of our relationship, which REALLY irked me), and used it to get her first election, but when it came up for appeal, she didn't appear once.
  3. I had lunch with a refugee from what used to be Burma this week. He talked about studying English in the refugee camp because they were praying to come to America. Now he's teaching his parents, who are both very hard workers at their jobs, even though they do not speak as they understand the language well. He's helped his family to buy a home for 7 of them to live in a 2-bedroom home and now he's purchased his own 2-bedroom home. If you ask him, he's living a dream life compared to the horrors of the refugee camps, something he can relate to as we hear about the terrible conditions of the Muslim refugee camps from the area right now and the possibility that those people may be forced back to their country. He's already gained his US citizenship, as have his sister and 2 cousins that are "younger". His parents, aunt, and grandparents are all working toward that and want to do the same, though he lost his uncle in the refugee camp, so he knows it's feasible that his grandparents never get the chance. People leaving a horrific situation aren't looking for a handout. They're looking for a chance, and like Smerf said, they're willing to risk life and limb to get away from what they're fleeing for many reasons. Address those reasons rather than vilify the refugees themselves.
  4. When Ann Coulter is calling you out...yeah.
  5. One of my neighbors (and the lawyer for our adoptions) is a pretty staunch Republican, but also a pretty adamant anti-Trump Republican, of which he said is a majority of those who attend many national convention planning meetings (something he's been involved with). Could the Republicans seriously offer up someone to challenge Trump as an incumbent, or would something more damning need to come out to move that needle for the Fox News core of the base?
  6. I just don't want to see Klobuchar on the ticket. I'd never vote for her, no matter the seat. She is the type of lawyer who trumpets protecting women by creating charges out of things that don't exist. It makes it even harder for a woman with a legit complaint to get respect and be heard when someone like Klobuchar is falsifying charges to appear more "pro-woman". Carol can chew me out on this one all she wants, and I'm "glad" to go private with more details, but the woman should be disbarred, not running for president.
  7. I think they were hoping he'd have it back after time to recover fully, and he did get better feel for the ball than he showed last summer, but he still didn't have his velo back, and he's just too much around the zone to get away with that.
  8. That's laughable to say the least, but even if so, nearly any other total can be viewed as tainted as well. It's not surprising that 61 happened the season it did. Essentially every year with expansion has produced ridiculous home run totals. Go back to Babe Ruth's 60 then? Wait, he never had to face an African-American player, many of whom were superior to the major league competition at the time (let alone not having to face anywhere near 90+ MPH heat on a consistent basis). Giancarlo Stanton had 59 in 2017 in a pitcher's ballpark with PED testing in place. Maybe he's the guy you want to put on the pedestal? Oh, wait, no, there was the whole ball controversy that took hold in 2017. Greenberg and Foxx were pre-integration. I'm sure Ryan Howard will be presumed dirty or have his little league ballpark (also a point in Ruth's favor) tossed out on him. Most likely, there will be whining of PEDs on McGwire in 1997 along with ARod and Luis Gonzalez. That would make the new home run king Ken Griffey, Jr. with 56 in 1997 your new champion.
  9. Interesting that one of the best young prospects in the game makes his debut tonight for the former Expos as well as Carter Kieboom has come up. He'll potentially bump Brian Dozier from the lineup when Trea Turner returns.
  10. It's change. Having the truck not operated by a human is one thing. Getting my load from point A to point B is the main concern, and some who rely on truck transport are the ones who really push industries like coal, so, yeah.
  11. Yeah, I was just talking the trucks. One thing this company was still doing was keeping the full gas engines. That meant the vehicle could not be fully autonomous as while it could pull itself into a gas station, the "rider" would at least need to fill the gas tank. I'm curious how that issue with location changes with different engines as they transition to hybrid and eventually full electric engines. I know the concern of some with tractor trailers transitioning to full electric is handling the pull of a full load in varied terrain. I still think it's an incredible shame that we can push hard on electric, but pushing hard at full implementation of a non-petroleum fuel source is non-existent because of "big oil" and their influence on Detroit.
  12. Vice News had an intriguing special report recently that led me to a company, and I found a town hall last evening (then got into researching two things and lost the link - sorry!) the company did with truckers, and one of the issues they still are trying to figure out is how to better protect their laser guidance/sensory system while also keeping it in position to be the most accurate that it can be. I do know that was one major issue that took nearly a decade with agricultural GPS to get where it's at now, and even then, it can get knocked out by the right hit to the vehicle by a pheasant or something like that.
  13. He's a lawyer. That's part of his job to participate in lawsuits. He's pursued lawsuits for police MISCONDUCT. The misdirection/dishonest takes, whether intentional or not, do not serve anyone in having a real conversation.
  14. Completely nonsensical post... With Biden running, can we please have Amy Poehler at every one of his rallies? That has to be one of my favorite character quirks in a recent sitcom.
  15. I'm usually not one to track guys shooting for 6th place on the single-season record book...
  16. Or you could live in a state that actively discourages it...
  17. Yeah, that's my main point. The technology RIGHT NOW has not shown to be effective in a rural environment. That's going to change, and I'm eager to see it do so, but in the Van example of my children, they will most certainly need the skills to operate a motor vehicle. It is akin to electric cars. It is still quite cost prohibitive (and even less effective) to utilize a vehicle powered with no fossil fuels at all in many areas and in many vocations. That time is coming (sooner than fully automated), and it will be welcomed as well.
  18. ...and "worked on" is the key, key phrase. GPS technology was dominant in new tractors rolling out before I graduated high school. That was over 20 years ago, and they're still working on the technology due to plenty of different environments in agriculture making it not perfect for all users and requiring more tweeking. That's my exact point. There are a ton of variables present in non-metro settings that will take work to develop, test, and reconfigure. That would make an autonomous car in rural South Dakota a risky proposition until the technology has been truly worked out, and especially for me as a parent to put my children into. Even being kind and saying the autonomous vehicle push will move faster than the worldwide agricultural market push on GPS has, giving 15 years to get technology adequate to be safe on rural roads means my youngest is 19. That still means that yes, they all have to learn how to drive.
  19. ...and when those washed out roads now have load upon load of soft gravel, making each 100 feet different than the last? I've lived all my life driving gravel roads through some nasty stuff, and I felt unsafe driving one of the main roads locally over the weekend due to the issues in road quality. There are so many things that play into this beyond just traffic. Sharing the road with a 12-wheel tractor pulling an air seeder Driving a wet gravel road just after a tractor has left significant ruts in various points that could do significant damage to the underside of the car God forbid the various differences in open range laws from state to state that could change the software's response to animals on the road.
  20. About like the people who claim the Angels are doing nothing to support Mike Trout, this misses a huge portion of what makes a major league team. The Orioles have made huge strides in the last few years and hired all the right people this winter. Things are pointing the right direction for the franchise.
  21. I hope Dan Winkler reaches out. Dan's given great interviews about coming back and being comfortable again on the mound going full-effort after his dramatic injury.
  22. All while one of the leading innovators in the arena completely trashes that technology: https://techcrunch.com/2019/04/22/anyone-relying-on-lidar-is-doomed-elon-musk-says/
  23. Tuition dollars can support University general-use facilities. Some schools go about that by having their shiny new athletic workout facility open to all students for certain hours that make it near-impossible for the average student to utilize, but even then, the entire facility has to be open for public use in that case, and most athletic departments don't enjoy that. In general, though, football and basketball revenues are utilized to fund the general costs of other sports (and if you consider the costs of scholarships, many programs don't break even at mid-level D1 schools that try to compete with the "big boys"). Athletic use of any tuition money is fairly minimal, outside of facilities or activities that are to be general use.
  24. ...or the brand new science building they had to build to just recruit more tuition dollars. In the end, it typically goes to a University President or other similarly-designated position, making well into 7 figures while some of his/her professors tend bar or donate plasma to make ends meet.
