  1. Watching the Marlins feed tonight against the Braves, and Larry Beinfest stated pretty flatly that Josh Johnson is not being shopped, all movements on Johnson have been "incoming calls"
  2. Sally Ride dead at 61
  3. The ESPN Baseball Today podcast discussed this with their second half predictions, and there are still one-game playoffs for division winners according to their podcast.
  4. Reminds me of the horror in college of coming back to the res hall after morning classes and watching the horror of Columbine, only 15 miles from where this happened. I cannot even imagine the grief, fear, and shock in that community right now.
  5. Once again, that was not the point I was making at all. There were comments about whether all of Wisconsin is Brewers or not, and someone brought up the western part of the state being loyal to the Twins, so I mentioned the Braves fan base in the state. There's also a pretty long-standing Cubs fan base in the southern part of the state.
  6. Where did I say that it was Braves territory? My comment was about the entirety of Wisconsin being Brewers, not just Milwaukee, and I made the comment that there are pockets of Braves fans throughout a lot of the state that remain loyal to the team.
  7. Until the 1998 home run chase, MSC (FSN) was the only regional channel in any of South Dakota, even the farthest west. The Rockies had a pretty good fan base in western SD from the time they started in 1993, but the Twins have been the dominant radio/TV team in the entire of the Dakotas since they came in the 60s, and you'd find the same in a lot of Montana/Wyoming as well, though those states start to get to Mariners long-standing fan bases.
  8. A lot of the state as in there are strong Braves fan pockets in a number of places throughout the state, and their fandom is strong as it has stayed the test of time and success of the local squad. You're trying to make it into a numbers thing, which is in no way, shape, or form what I was referring to in my statement. I have been to a number of Brewers/Braves games, and there are heavy Braves fan populations at each of those games. I would also say Wisconsin is in the top 3-4 states represented outside of Georgia on Braves message boards throughout the internet.
  9. I'm a Braves fan because of a great-grandmother who loved Hank Aaron rather than a Twins/Royals fan as geography would say I should be. Believe it or not, regardless of geography, some families all share fandom. I know it may shock you, but it happens.
  10. That or any children, grandchildren, family of that market. Pretty much spot on.
  11. Milwaukee (and a lot of the state of Wisconsin) are also very large supporters of the Braves, based on the previous status of the team there and their success while in Milwaukee. Typically Braves/Brewers is a very, very good draw in Milwaukee, moreso than some of their more regional competitors (Twins, Cubs, etc.).
  12. While I won't debate the believer/athiest deal here, I will say that in every faith/race/demographic majority, work has been done to suppress the minority, and that is work of the human spirit, not something that is unique to white people, Christians, Jews, men, or any majority group. Mainly, these conflicts and forced states up on others all boil down to a human desire for power and control, and that's not unique to any faith group, any race, or any other demographic section.
  13. And this is why I am having such a hard time starting to sell mine.
  14. Opposite view - since he's a pitcher, it made a lot of sense to take the money now rather than gamble on an injury free 2013 season that could cost him millions and possibly ever playing pro ball.
  15. Yep, I mistook that in reading the CBA.
  16. I was mistaken that it cannot be used in international, but it is draft bonus pool usable for the entire pool. There's a limit on how much you can use in the first 10 picks, but if they chose to spend that $4M on various other picks it's perfectly fine, as long as they stay within their top 10 pick limit.
  17. Well, they have that money and more that they can use, but they would have ~$4M to use toward international free agents that can come around or toward other picks they have not signed. That number is toward drafting/signing new players as a limit by MLB, not something set forth by their ownership, which would reflect on the MLB payroll.
  18. This could be the first Matt Harrington of the new system.
  19. Technically, Boras is not his official agent until AFTER he signs. He's an "advisor", a messed up system that's been there for years.
  20. Another signing period, another high prospect threatening up to the last moment that he won't sign. Wake me up when he hasn't signed after the 14th.
  21. It should only be a factor if two players are very close and one is in the playoffs and the other is not. That's the only reason playoff standing should come into it. Otherwise a guy like Yadier Molina would win it every year because he is the absolute most important player on his team, and they're playoff bound most years. If you don't agree with that, then you do see that the award has a significant amount of it's definition in the "best player" award. Otherwise, prepare to write down Andrelton Simmons as the NL ROY and NL MVP this year if you're pure basis is the "most valuable" player on a playoff competitive team.
  22. Hard to see where pitchers with the following lines would benefit the Twins: 3.25 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 4.13 k/bb 2.43 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 7.1 k/9 3.73 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 2.53 k/bb 3.50 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 2.59 k/bb 2.62 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 8.0 k/9 4.05 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 3.41 k/bb 3.51 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 7.0 k/9 3.69 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 6.9 k/9 3.44 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 2.52 k/bb
  23. I'm not distorting anything, just stating what I have all along. And I do not see a preseason top 50 guy available for Span. That's where the whole Zach Wheeler for Beltran argument came in. Wheeler was not a top 50 guy going into 2011. I'm not sure that there's a top 50 guy for Span out there. I don't doubt a top 100 guy, but drawing any line in the sand at top 50 is going to guarantee Span is a Twin.
  24. Batum agreed to a contract, per ESPN: http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/8134117/agent-says-portland-trail-blazers-nicolas-batum-verbal-agreement-minnesota-timberwolves Now let's see what the Blazers do...
