  1. Frank Wren has said that Minor/Delgado would require a monster return this offseason. Hanson was the piece they were hoping to move for an outfielder, but when you get a shot at a cost-controlled reliever of Walden's calibar, you jump on that. Bowden reported that the Twins came in asking for Minor or Medlen, and the Braves said Hanson or minor leaguers, and the Twins insisted they wanted MLB ready guys - then acquired a guy who might be ready for a September 2014 callup.
  2. If there is, it'd involve Salty, so Ross really doesn't change that. That said, it'd be incredibly surprising for them to make that move after just dumping the long-term deals that they did.
  3. Reading comprehension - it's FUNdamental!
  4. Minor/Delgado were never in play for Span, according to Mark Bowden. Hanson was gone last offseason when he turned down an offer to buy out his arbitration years, but strung the team along long enough that they couldn't afford to do the same for Martin Prado.
  5. Ross signed with the Red Sox about 3 weeks ago as the back up to Salty, reportedly because he was told he would start multiple times per week as a back up, something the Braves couldn't guarantee.
  6. Yeah...and somehow keep up two jobs, help with the family farm, run the youth ministry at the church, and find time enough to make cable and Netflix worthwhile things in my life. I have a feeling that if things progress, I may have an objection from a future Mrs.
  7. That's not what you'll hear on any Braves board or from any scout in the business. Hanson has major concerns to worry about with declining velocity, declining mechanics, and already a poor attitude with management. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Hanson missed 2013 due to surgery.
  8. Seriously, you used to recruit for the football team? Under which coach(s)? I'm a big Gopher buff, particularly football and basketball. Do you belong to the Gopherhole by any chance? I did campus tours for recruits under Coach Mason after I couldn't play anymore. Basically, they'd come to a weekend to do their official campus visit, and I would do the campus tour portion of the day. I do not belong to Gopherhole...just too many message boards (about 3 Braves ones, two minor league baseball ones, Twins Daily, and roughly 60-75 fantasy leagues each year among baseball, football, basketball, and March Madness pools).
  9. I HATE John Lannan. Seriously, the Braves acquired a power arm today, had a press conference to announce BJ Upton, but the best news of the day is no longer facing Lannan 3-7 times per year. He is like Braves kryptonite. For his career, he's a 4.01 ERA and 4.7 K/9 guy. Against the Braves for his career, he's a 3.20 WHIP and 5.8 K/9 guy. It's ridiculous.
  10. Lots of talk in the Minor League section about Meyer...

  12. In all seriousness, Brock and Parker, I'm a bit of a history buff on the Gopher athletics (part of being a tour guide for the school and then a recruiter for the football team along with working for the women's athletics marketing department). If you ever want to go down that road, my email's attached to my profile here, and I'd be more than willing to hammer out some possible ideas. For instance, did you know that the U of M was the school that "invented" cheerleading?
  13. I wouldn't touch him. The Braves made him available for any sort of trade since July all the way up to today, and no one bit, and for good reason on that. He'd be perfect on a Jon Lieber deal (one year of basically nothing with a huge second year based on performance of first year or after surgery is done). He's still likely going to need more surgery, but he refused to get it, which is one reason why he didn't see the MLB roster in September for the Braves.
  14. Hockey is huge, but many years the basketball merchandise is nip and tuck for the biggest sellers at Gold Country. Football isn't tremendously popular, but then again, going more retro and bringing out some of the history of the program would make for cool shirts. Something like "My favorite college football team is the last team to win 3 consecutive national championships, and my grandpa was 12 when it happened!"
  15. 8? Really? So you're not giving him credit for his upside, which is immense. And you're not giving him credit for his performance, which has been excellent. And you're not looking at his projectibility as a 6-foot-9 22-year-old who throws in the high 90s. What exactly are you looking at that has you ranking him that low? Nick, he's also still getting a lot of scouting reports expecting his major league future to be in the bullpen because of the wear of his mechanics over a major league season as a starter on his body and his arm. I think I'd have him about 6-7, but not above Gibson for sure.
  16. That is where I'd have issue. Unless you're okay with a guy who is still about a 50/50 bet to be a bullpen guy ranking above a sure starter. I'd still have Gibson over Meyer any day of the week, and twice on Sunday - and I own Meyer in a dynasty league, so I'm well aware of his talents.
  17. Oh, and if you'd like any ideas for Gopher stuff, just fire me an email.
  18. If the size keeps coming off, a 3x is possible, but it will be a bit. My issue is more the length of a shirt usually, though.
  19. Not now that he was traded for a minor league pitcher, but the Braves have $25-35M to play with.
  20. Upton would move to left, and they still have interest, but the Twins have reportedly been asking for Mike Minor or Kris Medlen.
  21. Hmmm...Gopher stuff? Just saying.... Also, us "hefty" men will have difficulty with only XXL offered.
  22. Who? They have Pastornicky and Ahmed, both of whom project as utility guys. We're not getting Andrelton Simmons for Span. Dozier is absolutely just as good and maybe better than Pastornicky. Ahmed has a lot of variety in opinions. He could be anywhere from a low-end utility guy to a lower-first division shortstop based on different prospectors. He's a guy who could be a solid hitter (.270-.290 with some pop and a little speed) and his defensive value has drawn a wide variety of opinions, depending on the day you saw him. You are correct on Simmons. You wouldn't get Simmons for Span and Sano, let alone Span.
  23. Not so fast. There has been significant reporting the last few days that Upton is not assumed to start in CF for the Braves in 2013. They could slide him to left, move Prado to 3rd (which was the plan anyway), and still pursue a center fielder. That would give them the best defensive outfield in the game, as they also enjoyed this year, something vital for the young pitching staff.
  24. Wait...what? The NFL tests for more masking agents, has options to test players via blood after previous offenses, etc. that baseball is nowhere near accomplishing in their testing system. That's just the beginning of it as well.
  25. Some always will. Baseball's system is light years behind the NFL's system, for instance, but there are still those who get away with steroids in the NFL. Random testing will allow that. You start doing mandatory testing 1-3 times per year on players, and it will become near impossible to dodge drug use unless, of course, that darned Fed Ex guy screws up again. It was my understanding that some of the latest cream based steroids were clear of your system in 24 hours and undetectable after that. Mandatory testing 1-3 times/year will catch a few guys but it would be impossible imo to make a dent in the problem. The synthetic testosterone creams are undetectable within 24-48 hours in urine, but for months in blood tests. The blood test would also have to be part of it.
