  2. So if fatbeer wins, and he's not on the site anymore, does a tree fall in a silent forest?
  3. You've been shown your "hurt" comment is incorrect, so that's not worth arguing. I've been conversing with many on this board back to the days on ESPN, and I'd hardly consider what I do trolling. I also participate in a Mets message board as well, and though they're a rival, I've never once been accused of trolling on their site either. Holding fast to arguments that are continually proven false would be a much closer definition of trolling. Ur trollface. My trollface? I am trollface? Bueller?
  4. I want to say my thanks as well. I was concerned about the transition from BYTO to Twins Daily as many of the other Twins-centered sites very quickly deteriorated into a STrib message board or Rube Chat. I enjoy the format and thank all those, both those "in authority" and the community, for making this place a good place to discuss the Twins, baseball, and life in general.

  6. He needs to be on the team as of opening day to be eligible, and you would need to offer him a qualifying offer, which is very different from arbitration. A qualifying offer level will be determined each season, but it's based on an average of the top 125 salaries for the previous season. For 2012, at the last time it was updated (early August by Buster Olney), it was going to take a $13.3M offer for one season for a qualifying offer. If the player accepts that, you pay them that amount for the next year or negotiate a longer term deal. If they reject that, then the team will be eligible for a compensatory draft pick. If the team does not make an offer up to the qualifying level or the player accepts the qualifying offer, there is no compensatory pick. If Johnson is hurt in 2013, it is highly doubtful he would get an estimated $13.7M after 2013 (current number for after 2013 in Olney's August article), so the Twins would be stuck with him at that number if they even offered that amount to him. So there's a fairly high chance that Josh Johnson would bring you back no picks in 2013, and there's a nonzero chance that Johnson provides you less WAR than Scott Baker (Baker earned 1.1 fWAR more in 2011 in a season where both missed time due to injury).
  7. I've got another one of Victorino but it won't upload. I also want to post the video of Randy Johnson destroying a pigeon that flew into the path of one of his fastballs but the quality of the video clips on the web is terrible. That Randy Johnson one is gold, as is the similar one of Dave Winfield as a Yankee unloading a throw toward home and hitting a bird.
  8. You know what Joe Torre was before he was a manager - a long-time player. Joe Girardi? player. Buck Showalter? Minor league player. Basically, it's very rare that you see a manager that wasn't a player along the way, even if he didn't make the majors. That said, Joe Torre is a monstrous rarity - a successful manager who was a "star" player in his day (9 All-Star games, 1 MVP, 1 Gold Glove, etc.). Yet, because of that, he had clashes along the way, most infamously as the Braves manager when he tried to wield his "I was a star for this franchise" over the reigning MVP at the time and lost. Right now, some of the former players who I think are probably going to get a shot soon include Eddie Perez and Terry Pendleton of the Braves, Brad Ausmus of the Padres, Ryne Sandberg of the Phillies, Jerry Browne of the Nationals, Steve Decker of the Giants, Brian Harper of the Cubs (yes, THAT Brian Harper), and Joe McEwing of the White Sox. There's a huge list of former players, and guys like Pendleton and Sandberg that won MVPs or were legit Hall of Famers are the rare air here. Molitor would be rare as well, but if he has the gumption to do it, who are you and I to tell him no?
  9. The one of him running around the bases on a foul shot on minor league injury rehab while the other players just let him because he is so despised is glorious as well, but I cannot find it for the life of me.
  10. Exactly. Like I said earlier, it took Hanley to get Josh Beckett moved. I would almost guarantee it takes Sano to get Johnson moved. The Marlins had huge reported offers this summer and didn't move him, so I doubt they'll move him without a big return. It took Gomez and Humber to get Johan... DING DING DING! And Johan had a long term contract in place before they accepted the trade AND Johan was the best pitcher in all of baseball. 2 prospects in BA's top 52, yet another in the top 100, and another in the Mets top 10 for Baseball America. Yep, not valuable prospects at all!
  11. That trade was several years ago, the way teams trade prospects has changed quite a bit, just look at the Grienke etc moves. Yep, and they were still asking for similar return to move Johnson this summer. Some teams have changed, others have not...
  12. I posted that one via link earlier. Great image, though Phillies Santa is not amused!

  14. They didn't salary dump in 2012. They traded for big prospect hauls. You can criticize not getting a particular top prospect in their deals, but they did get a good haul in each deal, and they'll be looking for top prospects in any deal they do.
  15. Think what was given up for Josh Beckett. Expect that much of a return. Hanley was part of that deal as was Anibal Sanchez. I'd not be surprised if one of the top 2-3 prospects would absolutely have to be involved to come to the table.
  16. Ah, that's fair. I've long believed that the best return on Span will be a player in the low minors. I'm not against the Twins making a run at a Johnson or Shields but if the asking price is too high, Ryan should try to move Span for prospects. It's the smart move, IMO. Trying to get a ML pitcher for Span is going to prove to be a tall order, I think. The best long-term solution for the team is to stock the farm as much as possible while also attacking the FA market. I really think the Braves do offer the opportunity for the Twins to get a high-talent MLB arm while Atlanta can get the leadoff CFer that they covet.
  17. My point on Shields has nothing to do with his real value. It has everything to do with what the DRays ask for their players. They tend to ask the moon for return on their guys and offer the toilet for other teams' players. It has been their reputation for a number of years now.
  18. Um, no. You can't use replay to look at any judgmental calls in ANY sport. This would 100% not be reviewable in baseball. Replay would not be an option here. Bad call. MLB and the Umps need to man up and at least admit the mistake. No changing it now, but at least acknowledge the mistake. Then every call in baseball and football should no longer be reviewable. The umpires mentioned the idea of allowing the staff on the field to overturn fair/foul type of calls which are the epitomy of judgement calls that could be reviewed. If staff on the field could have seen the video and compared it to the rule itself, it would be overturned.
  19. It wasn't as bad as the Chuck Knoblauch game in the dome, but it was terribly embarrassing for this Braves fan to see how the hometown fans responded. It was a horrid call and yet another example of why baseball needs replay, but committing 3 errors cost that game, not the call.
  20. Bourn is arguably the best defensive center fielder in the game. On any team but Atlanta, he's a guaranteed 50+ steals and he hits for solid average. The biggest knock on him this year was his heightened strikeout rate. Regarding Hamilton's contract, I'd wager he's going for 5 years, 105-130 million. And that does not include the 4 paid staff members that he requires the team he goes to to employ for him in order to keep him in check.
  21. I'd rather have Bourn or Upton than Hamilton. Hamilton = Much, much more money, substantial risk and possible franchise destroyer, which = Not worth the gamble. I can understand that, but I doubt either Upton or Bourn goes for less than $15M per.
  22. I said anyone NOT named Hamilton. If money was no object, I'd want (in order) Hamilton, Bourn, and Upton as my top 3 position player free agents.
  23. Um, I'd rather have Michael Bourn or BJ Upton than anyone not named Hamilton that's an offensive free agent this year.
  24. Frankly, neither one of them will be able to get done any of "their" plans without the help of Congress, so why do we care what anyone's "plan" is? Romney could have a plan to have every person in America be making six figures before the end of his presidency. It's not logical or probable, but neither is either candidate's economic plans in totality or their foreign policy plans or their health care plans or a single bit of what they're selling. Rather than talking about plans that neither of them has the overarching power to make happen on their own, I'd love to see a return to a Nixon/Kennedy type of debate where we were truly exploring the candidate's feelings and position on an issue, not so focused on what the plan was.
  25. There's nothing in either the Twins Talk or the More Baseball feeds that would suggest it. My apologies on the repetition. Oh, no worries! Just that I'd put in a whole Braves postseason preview into the last one, so I didn't want to bore everyone with it again! This is my absolute favorite time of the year. There is no such thing as too much postseason baseball talk. It's the NCAA tourney for professional baseball.
