  1. Fellow Dakotan, and hardcore Braves fan. The Twins are my secondary team, which is why I am here. I think I've been interacting on message boards with some guys here for over a decade at this point, which is scary to consider.
  2. You and I shall box. In an old-timey way. Friday henceforth at three stones past the noon bell.
  3. Twins. That's why I'm here!
  4. The other end of that is the amount of lawyers who would line up to do the representation pro bono. I have a good friend who is a lawyer in the Twin Cities who has represented churches in various cases pro bono a number of times.
  5. It wouldn't let me edit, so I deleted and re-posted with changes: Arizona Diamondbacks - 71.5: Under Atlanta Braves - 73.5: Over Baltimore Orioles - 82.5: Over Boston Red Sox - 86.5: Under Chicago Cubs - 82.5: Over Chicago White Sox - 81.5: Over Cincinnati Reds - 77.5: Under Cleveland Indians - 84.5: Under Colorado Rockies - 71.5: Under Detroit Tigers - 84.5: Over Houston Astros - 75.5: Under Kansas City Royals - 81.5: Over Los Angeles Angels - 88.5: Under Los Angeles Dodgers - 92.5: Over Miami Marlins - 81.5: Over Milwaukee Brewers - 78.5: Under Minnesota Twins - 71.5: Under New York Mets - 81.5: Under New York Yankees - 81.5: Under Oakland Athletics - 81.5: Over Philadelphia Phillies - 68.5: Under Pittsburgh Pirates - 84.5: Over San Diego Padres - 84.5: Over San Francisco Giants - 84.5: Under Seattle Mariners - 86.5: Over St. Louis Cardinals - 88.5: Over Tampa Bay Rays - 78.5: Under Texas Rangers - 78.5: Under Toronto Blue Jays - 83.5: Under Washington Nationals - 93.5: Under Tie breaker 1: The two AL WC teams will be: Boston and Kansas City Tie breaker 2: The two NL WC teams will be: Pittsburgh and San Diego
  6. Not all of them were with Boras when their deal was signed, but even then, the words I chose were intentional "nearly all". He has taken nearly all of his clients to free agency. You found 8 of the thousands of clients he represents.
  7. ?? If you seriously have an issue with Braves as a team name, you'll need to convince actual Native Americans that they're being offended. There are old logos and other things that should never be brought back, but the team name is certainly far from offensive. No more than Rangers.
  8. See, that's just it, I'm not anti-Boras whatsoever. The guy does what he needs to do to get the best for his clients in a business where his clients are drastically undervalued in the entire scheme of the money coming into the game. He doesn't cut "home-town" deals for guys because he knows that the team they're playing for has typically already reaped tons of value by paying a guy $500K for production that would cost at least 10-30 times that on the free agent market. If I were a major league player, I'd want Boras as my guy any day of the week because he is the absolute best at what he does. All that said, when you have taken nearly every single player to free agency instead of signing an extension, the team who has your player will ensure they get as many years of team-controlled cheap play as possible before they have to bid for your client's services on the open market. So, Boras really only has himself to blame for Bryant being in minor league camp right now, but I don't think any of his clients would want him to change a thing about his approach.
  9. Well stated. To give the Atlanta fan perspective, there's a few wrinkles. First, Jace Peterson is a much better player than Atlanta realized when they acquired him as really the 3rd or 4th piece of the Justin Upton deal. Second, Peterson's emergence has sent Jose Peraza back to AAA, where he'll get some outfield reps as he's never played outside the infield before. Third, Melvin Upton is injured with a fractured foot right now, so the Braves may have a spot for CF and LF both, and Benson is one of the few guys in camp with defensive ability at corners AND center, most only offer one or the other defensively. Lastly, outside of Peraza, the Braves don't really have an outfield "prospect" close to the majors. Their two best outfield guys are likely Mallex Smith and Braxton Davidson, who will likely be at least two years away each, so a guy who is still relatively young, has pedigree, and could surprise for a year or two on the cheap is a positive thing for Atlanta fans. It certainly beats paying someone $5-7M per season for likely similar production.
  10. I loved Boyer as a young pitcher coming up for the Braves. He was a local Georgia boy who made it on the major league roster and had a very nice rookie year before injuries/surgery really changed his career trajectory. I'm glad to see him make it back, especially for the local team. Perhaps I can find my way to a Twins game this year to catch him in person.
  11. As someone who's been participating on forums with Brock for quite some time, this is absolutely an issue that he would be more than well-versed in. Now, I wouldn't only go by any person's opinion, regardless of how educated it is, but Brock's opinion on this topic is very, very well-informed and trustworthy, certainly moreso than about 99.98% of the people from either side that have been on television talking about it. Take the time to do your research and weigh Brock's opinion on the matter in that light, but calling his opinion as anything but based on intense research and knowledge of the subject area bugs me, and I'm not even the guy who's spent the time doing the research.
  12. Also, for those who feel terribly bad about Kris Bryant, he was paid $6.7M by the Cubs before he ever stepped onto a baseball field, and if he would have ended up flaming out in AA, you wouldn't hear the Cubs wanting that money back...
  13. I honestly do believe with the Cubs and Theo that they know Boras, and they know that with some of their other "superstar prospects", they'll be able to work extensions as they blossom into major leaguers. With Bryant, they won't, and it has to do with his agent. I don't have any issue with Boras getting the best for his clients - that's his job, but then don't come crying when your own tactics are costing your players somewhat in the front end.
  14. George Springer last season was held for a couple weeks.
  15. Benson has not hit well, but he's been about the best defensive outfielder in camp.
  16. Look at the Braves right now. They'd still have another year of control on Jason Heyward if they would have held him in the minors for two weeks instead of starting him in the majors on opening day. His agent wouldn't work out an extension, and now he's been traded with one year left of team control. Having that extra year of team control would have gotten the Braves into a bigger revenue stream with their new stadium and likely a new TV deal. The cost is substantial for teams, especially with guys who have Boras as an agent due to his lack of desire to negotiate extensions before reaching free agency.
  17. The Cubs traded away Valbuena, but they retained Mike Olt, who has hit quite well this spring and reportedly shown a ton of growth defensively. This is the system. Get over it Boras.
  18. The Braves have grabbed a few of these guys in the last couple of years, then stored them in the minors without giving them a chance, even when they produce. See Cedric Hunter's career revitalization in Atlanta's system. Based on that history, I'm pleasantly surprised to see them give Benson a true shot.
  19. Healthy exchange? Terry Ryan traded his banana for Mike Pelfrey's celery at the team's bag lunch on Sunday.
  20. I don't think anyone directly sourced it at the time. It's something that's come out in bits and pieces after Frank Wren's firing last fall. Like I said in my post, it depends on which story you believe. The Twins were quite interested in trying to "buy low" on Teheran after his rough season in AAA, but the Braves didn't want to give him away by any means. The Graham for Span offer was "confirmed" as something heard in that time by David O'Brien, the Braves beat writer. It's been held up as a "what if" as Upton has gone bad.
  21. The Braves' #1 target for CF that offseason was Denard Span. When they moved away from him, they attempted to strike fast, believing there would be a big market for CFers in free agency.
  22. His reasoning is BS. One of his benefactors is Ted Nugent, so you'd think he'd know that it wasn't just country music who used the tragedy to make money. I personally lost a lot of respect for a number of artists in country music for some very obvious pandering to make money off of the tragedy.
  23. The point is that pastors on both sides of the religious spectrum do these things, and they absolutely should not. Similarly, a police officer is encouraged not to appear in uniform or identify himself as an officer when participating in politics, unless it is in his job role. The other end of things is some churches actually WANT their pastor to be overtly involved in politics, and we should not judge all pastors unless we know for sure that pastor isn't asked to push this agenda by his church, in which case, we need to come down on the church as much or more than the pastor.
  24. Was he acting as a pastor or a community leader? You're opening a can of worms completely here. I believe what diehard was talking about is direct church involvement in politics through church-based funding in politics or preachers using their pulpit to further a political agenda. Whether we as Christians want to admit it or not, pastors are human beings and citizens of the country that they serve. Their involvement in politics on a personal level is as encouraged (and expected, in my view of citizen rights and responsibilities) as any other member of society. The difference is whether Pastor John comes out by saying that "I, John Smith, do not support...." or "I, Pastor John Smith of Holy Hills Christian Church, do not support...". The difference there is incredibly important.
  25. I've been one of those leaders, working in churches in the Twin Cities in the mid-2000s before leaving for social work. I will tell you that the biggest issue most churches are TRULY worried about is the mixed PR and battle that comes from both sides when discussing homosexual marriage. One large church I worked with simply required at least one member of a wedding party to be part of the church in order to utilize any of the wedding services. That cleared any issues immediately. It's really a cop out excuse. I've been in the church leader shoes. There are few places you'll find with better ability to fund a legal fight than a church, so they're not scared of that cost whatsoever. If it was truly about their beliefs, they'd buck whatever PR they'd get from their legal position if things were challenged. Especially since most cases simply get thrown out before proceeding to trial now because of the precedent of higher court rulings.
