  1. Yeah, Willingham and Doumit are terrible. Is there an "ignore" feature on this website? Or do I have to do it with my own eyes.
  2. It's apparent you don't think much of Span, which is probably where the disconnect is. Span was rated as the 3rd best defensive CF in baseball by the voters giving the Fielding Bible awards and he's a pretty darn good leadoff guy who sees a lot of pitches and has a team friendly contract. I guess some of us feel there's more value there than you think there is. I see a lot of value, just not as much as a starting pitcher who's been healthy, under twenty five, and under team control for four years. Span's health issues do play a big part in my view of his ability to fetch a return, which is something I think we've been understating.
  3. I think the Rays trust Jennings to play center. I don't think they trust him to bad leadoff. Tampa Bay got a .314 OBP from the No. 1 spot in the order this year and .304 from the two-hole. You've gotta believe a stat-centric organization like that is going to be heavily targeting affordable high-OBP options to plug into the top of the lineup, particular since it would lessen their reliance on a breakout year from Jennings, who was nothing special this year. Joe Christensen recently called my suggested Shields for Span-and-Hermsen deal far-fetched. And when I think about it, maybe he's right. But I can see plenty of reasons that the Rays would be extremely interested in acquiring Span. This is a good point, although Jennings did post a very strong walk rate throughout the minor leagues.
  4. Span for Mike Minor seems pretty wishful to me.
  5. Well, he can go there....not sure if he can do the job in CF. Some TB fans I know seem to doubt it, but honestly I'm not sure. He did play more than 400 career minor league games at CF, not that it means he's major league capable, but that certainly was his trajectory as he was developing. If I'm TB, I'd use Sheilds to get a better than Span/Revere can offer.
  6. I agree. In any case, a one year deal doesn't work to the Twins advantage as it would in most years, with Morneau's 14mil coming off the books. Signing a pitcher (esp. one with a better recent track record) to a two or three year deal isn't the sinking ship it could be in most years because of the future payroll flexibility. There's nearly a half dozen (if not more) FA pitchers I'd rather have than Santana, who might even come cheaper.
  7. TB does have Jennings. He can play CF, can't he?
  8. Sarcasm? What's worrisome is that if they sign Greinke they might not be in first place each of the next 3 years.
  9. Sure, but the pitcher whom they acquire actually does matter. In FA they can acquire a pitcher for nothing but salary. Santana has all kinds of questions marks, and might be the wrong pitcher, even if the right type of move.
  10. The Royals acquired a scuffling, but talented Sanchez last year, and that didn't work out well at all. I question the Royal's ability to spot major league arms.
  11. We didn't need a gold glove award to tell us Hardy was a good defender. In fact with Jones winning over Trout, I think the gold glove works against Hardy's ability to play defense. Gold glove is a hustle/good guy award.
  12. Joey Devine became a FA today and would certainly be worth a minor league deal...
  13. Wait. We're endorsing marriage now? Wtf guys.
  14. Pitchers. Duh. Chief is right, that the relievers in the past year (two years) haven't been battled tested. Throwing relievers out there in low pressure situations doesn't tell us much about their value as a reliever. That said, we should be looking for Fiens and Burtons not Capps. There's nothing keeping the Twins from bringing in lots of minor league FA guys. Terry Ryan might be talking less in terms of dollars committed to the bullpen, so much as the time the Twins spend scouting/scouring the wire and free agency for arms. Each minor league signing is more than a whim, there's investment on the scouting/front office side. And frankly the gains made from mining the lower rungs FA are more likely to show up in the bullpen than anywhere else. Put another way, the FO doesn't need to invest scouts/personnel into investigating whether Grieke or Marcum or Sanchez are good; those scouting/personnel assets are better used towards investigating players the team might have both questions and beliefs about/in.
  15. I wish the FO had the balls to do this, but his contract works totally against a deal. Timmy had a bad year, but he kept the Ks up, which makes me think there's some aberration in his overall numbers, and a home court like Target Field might dramatically improve his numbers. He's signed (I believe) through '13 for 22 mil, and than an FA. So that's a no go. Moreover, the way he's pitched in relief, his trajectory is towards the role of closer. 2013 will be an interesting year for the Freak. But we can dream, right? Maybe the Giants pick up a chunk of salary, maybe the Twins sign the guy to a team friendly deal. Then again, signing Grienke and trading Span for other parts makes even more sense--since, after all, we're dreaming.
  16. As Jim insinuated, I also doubt TR had anything to do with this firing and wasn't consulted for it. Any connection made between front office firings and the business side of the Twins is specious at best. That people use this as a sounding board for "The Twins don't know what they're doing! See!" routine is all too typical.
  17. Disappointing, to say the least.
  18. Marcum would be a great addition. He'd be the best pitcher we've signed in FA since Kenny Rogers.
  19. Fair enough. I just tend to give people a bit of slack when they are also playing the PR game after a publicly denounced transaction. I just don't think there's really any reason to mistrust TR more than any other GM or Manager; I think some of the job involves PR-speak; in fact, TR has struck me as one of the more straight forward guys in the industry.
  20. Nice job, guys (and fine design job, pig!). TR's a little feisty in the interview; I like it.
  21. Our own Mike Redmond is rumored to be the frontrunner for the job.
  22. Ryan has been caught in a straight up lie more than once... I'd like to see evidence of this. I'm sure he's guilty of misrepresentations, half-truths, distortions, but "straight up" lies? When he trade Castillo, he said he only traded him cause "I didn't anticipate re-signing him at the end [of the season], so we ended up getting a couple players in return before October,". Then a day or two later he said he would have traded him even if he wasn't a pending free agent. So one of those statements is a lie. That's pretty thin, especially without a quote to support the second assertion. Even if he made the two assertions, I'm not sure it makes TR a straight up liar. The first quote can be found here for those curious.

  24. Well he had 57 pitches through three... He wasn't exactly dominant.
