  1. No, then you would have to rename the game...maybe call it hockey!
  2. I was hoping that Florimon would be moved up when I saw Dozier coming up to the Twins. He has been playing very well at New Britain. You can tell every time Benson comes to the plate that he is really struggling. Hopefully, this will have the same effect it did two years ago when he went back to Fort Myers for a couple weeks.
  3. As I trust you know, my point was that several players who are being paid very well need to step up and be those leaders.
  4. I have watched about half of Rochester's games this year and you are right Seth. Just the other day he was deep in the hole and made a long throw to first. It was a one hopper to the first baseman that bounced about three feet in front of the first baseman and was 6-8" off the ground when it got to Rizotti's glove. He didn't make the pick, a pick even mediocre first basemen should have made. Dozier got the error on a play!
  5. This has been more than depressing. What I don't understand is why this lineup isn't more potent? Mr. Ryan did a good job filling the holes in the lineup with the budget he had available this winter. Defensively, they aren't as bad as they were last year, expecially at shortstop. In hindsight, his moves to sign many bullpen options appears to be holding as several are doing well and Burton has been great. But as a wise man once said, "you are only as good as your next starting pitcher." And our next starting pitcher is likely to be worse than his opponent...day after day after day. Now count me amongst those who believe that Liam Hendriks will be a very good major league pitcher, perhaps similar to Brad Radke. But that is only one of five in the rotation and he needs most of this year at AAA. Where are the other four going to come from? As much as many would like the problem solved tomorrow, that isn't going to happen. I assume that Mr. Ryan has a calendar and has circled 2014 or 2015 as the year he will get us back into contention. Every major move he makes will be part of that overall plan, beginning with June's draft and July's trades. The other moves of picking up some of these guys on waivers (Thomas, Komatsu) isn't part of that plan, those are done to try to become less bad today. As we lose every day, I ask, where is the leadership in the clubhouse? When is one of our highly paid players going to step up and say "get on my back and I will lead us to victory?"
  6. Good morning Seth, I know Marquis was all over the place, but that ump's strike zone wasn't good either. Felix also walked some guys and also looked very frustrated with the zone.
  7. It will take time, at least three to four years to fix this team. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of answers in the minor leagues for a pitching staff that is in shambles. In 2005, the Twins drafted Garza, Slowey, Duensing and Burnett. That was a great draft...two very good starters, a marginal starter who will likely become a solid bullpen arm and an intriguing bullpen arm that needs to take that last step. Yes, two very good starters which included Slowey before his wrist injury. He hasn't been that same since! In 2006 and 2007, they went young...high school position players at the top. In 2008, Carlos Gutierrez was coming off surgery and Shooter Hunt was a mistake. In 2009 they took three college pitchers, Gibson, Bashore, and Bullock. Two of three have had major surgeries and they are hopeful that Gibson can return. In 2010, Alex Wimmers also has been dealing with an injury/problems since being drafted. Yes, scouts can't foresee injuries. But in some of these cases they could have as the player had a history of injury. The bottom line is that since 2005 they have taken six pitchers between the first and second rounds and haven't had an inning pitched by any of them on the field at the Dome or Target Field. The only value they have gotten is that Bullock brought them Scott Diamond in a trade. I know you will disagree, but I believe there is some truth to the comment I once told you about that a wise friend once told me, a comment about the changes in their scouting/drafting responsibilites.
  8. Do the Twins have to write the checks to Nishi? The answer is yes, so it must be included.
  9. Good morning Seth, I agree that it is time to do something and had been thinking about Hendriks. He has the potential to be another Radke which this team really needs, but needs another half season at Rochester. I think the smartest move would be to send him back down and bring up Jeff Manship, who has been great of late. Slide Swarzak into the 5th starter role and let Manship take over long relief. Although Manship will need a couple days as he pitched 3.1 no-hit innings last night for his second win. Agree that there should be more moves, although that may wait a few weeks to see if Ramirez is for real. I would also prefer to keep all the kids at Rochester until mid-July then bring them up as a group after Mr. Ryan opens several spots on the roster with trades. This year's draft is considered weaker than normal, does next year have a super star (ie, Strasburg or Harper caliber player) for our #1 pick overall?
  10. A snake native to the dodgeville/spring green area, or an import?
  11. Seth, Hermsen is moving up to fill Luke French's spot in the starting rotation. French also moved up to Rochester, likely to fill Deduno's spot in the Red Wings rotation.
  12. He walks to many batters and has never been able to fix that. In the major leagues, his control (or lack of control) will cause him to be constantly behind in the count. We all know what happens when you are constantly behind to big league hitters. It is a shame, cause he could be very good if he could get his walks under control!
  13. If we are going to talk about Dozier's error, we should include that it was a ball in the dirt that the first baseman should have picked on an easy hop. He didn't and Dozier got the error. Guerra was excellent and provided what for me was one of the few good points on an ugly day for the entire system. Back to Rochester, they gave up a run on a ground ball to third base with the bases loaded and the infield in. The third baseman, Ray Chang, threw the ball into the runner when he was more than 10 feet from home plate. A good throw and they get no runs in the third and the Red Wings are up 3-1 rather than tied going into the ninth inning. Esmerling Vasquez was terrible in the ninth. Matter of fact, he hasn't been good all spring. You can't win close games if he is pitching and he has pitched in to many close games which is why he is 0-3 with a 6.94 ERA! It was great however, seeing Benson get a couple hits. He had two other at bats that he stung that ball that was hit right at someone.
  14. Does this tell us we should trade down to #12? Oh, I forgot, this isn't the NFL and we can't do that! Bah!!!
  15. Jack, you are just plain wrong to say that upper management doesn't care. My only hope that Mr. Ryan has the courage to stay with it long enough to fix it as he has a huge job facing him. Take a look at this team, how many players on the current roster would you want on a team in 2014 if you wanted to contend? I am afraid it isn't more than a handful.
  16. I got so bad I switched to CBS and watched NCIS reruns. Flipped to FSN on commercials to see if the Twins were getting back in it. Nope, just got more ugly every ten minutes.
  17. Another great read Seth, Thanks! I watch most of the Red Wings games and saw both of his diving catches Tuesday night. They weren't his best, but were outs that 80% of centerfielders don't get to (yes, he was in left field). As for John's question, I believe that Ben Revere will be a productive starting outfielder for a long time. He will just be a bit different than what most fans like to see...ie, fast with almost no power. My other question that you touched on is what happens to Parmelee when Morneau is playing first base half of the time? With Gardy preferring to have Mauer at first a few games a week when Doumit is catching, Parmelee could be down to a couple games a week at first. Does he go back to Rochester? I don't see that as a problem if he does as he needs to play every day. Personally, I thought that is the move that was going to happen yesterday.
  18. This stinks. Count me amongst those who believed that Hughes can be a solid player, assuming he gets more than 3 ab a week. Why not Burroughs instead of Hughes? I think we are finding out that Gardy is in love with Burroughs. Gotta have that big left handed bat to come off the bench, don't ya? As Soucheray would say, this is B. as in B., S. as in S! Will Hughes make it through to Rochester? Very unlikely in my opinion.
  19. Wimmers has a tender elbow. They don't think he will miss more than one start. Please!!!!!
  20. With two pitchers currently with gimpy arms, maybe they won't send a pitcher down. With Mauer playing a few games a week at 1B and Morneau playing there a few games a week...Parmelee isn't going to see a lot of action. Wouldn't surprise me if the players sent down is Parmelee!
  21. The USA total includes 27 players. Baker and Waldrop were both included because they were on the 25 man roster (on the disabled list). Marquis wasn't eligible for berevement leave as that ends at seven days. Thus, the Twins actually optioned him to New Britain, thus, removing him from the 25 man roster.
  22. That would leave Rochester with only two catchers. Would they be able to continue playing? Or would they have to forfeit their games?
  23. John, Shouldn't you have included the two players that the Twins are paying $3.0mm each to when writing this rather than going with USA Today, who fails to include them? Adding Marquis and Nishioka increases the Twins opening day payroll to what it actually is...$100,085,000. Granted, Hendriks $480,000 should be deducted as he would have been in Rochester if Marquis was with the team. I would expect (I don't have USA Today's 2011 numbers) that five and a half to six million changes the relationship between the Twins and other teams significantly and they are not fourth and fifth in terms of dollars and percentage.
  24. Why would Baker agree to anything less than $9.5mm with the Twins? It is likely that Baker is healthy enough to be in Florida and throwing during the FIL in late September/October. So the Twins will have a good indication of how his comeback is looking. If things look good, you either pick up the option or negotiate a multi year deal at less than $9.5mm. If you want to retain him, the safest route for the Twins would be to pick up the option and sign a new deal with him after next spring training.
  25. You have to include Matt Carson in that outfield. Is a toss up whether Carson or Dozier is their best hitter. I agree that this is a good move as Revere needs to play every day. He needs to work on the little things that will make him a good major leaguer. Things like bunting for base hits, etc!
