  1. You know, I know he doesn't hit for power, but Span has been pretty constant on defense in CF. I'm starting to think he should be our all-star rep.
  2. Interesting. They just said on TV that Matt Capps is not available - sore right shoulder. He'll be reevaluated on Tuesday.
  3. Well, it looks like the hamstring is affecting Mauer - that ball he hit to the wall could have been a double if he had been running hard.
  4. There we go! Small-ball ties the game.
  5. I almost hesitate to say this, not wanting to jinx this, but Blackie is pitching fairly well today. A couple of hard-hit balls, but he seems to have better control than we've seen recently.
  6. So do you all think it was intentional that Weeks tried to take Mauer out, and even moved inward to do so? I know that's part of the game, but Mauer was not really blocking the plate, and they could be testing his hamstring.
  7. Thanks! I find this stuff interesting. Do you see any unsigned draftees who might be sent here if/when they sign? Or are they all destined for GCL?
  8. If only we could do the same to Braun...
  9. I like to dream as much as the next guy, but isn't Greinke just that - a dream? We're not gonna sign him. He's making 13.5M this year, and there is nothing in his performance this year to suggest he'll have to take a paycut. Somebody will give him a big-money, long-term deal. And even if the Twins (foolishly) tried to compete salary-wise, why would he come here? If I had spent my entire career playing for Kansas City & Milwaukee, I'd be wanting to play for a contender on my next deal. That's not the Twins.
  10. One problem with that is that if Bard doesn't sign, they can't reallocate that slot money elsewhere - it just disappears.
  11. Twins Lineup Span, CF Revere, RF Willingham, DH Morneau, 1B Doumit, C Plouffe, 3B Dozier, SS Mastroianni, LF Carroll, 2B SP: Hendriks Brewers Lineup Aoki, RF Morgan, CF Braun, LF Ramirez, 3B Kottaras, DH Weeks, 2B Green, 1B Ransom, SS Maldonado, C SP: Fiers Mauer out due to a sore hamstring.
  12. I've always thought of AAA rosters being composed of 3 groups of players: 1) True prospects sharpening their skills before going to the bigs (although there has been a trend for them to skip AAA in recent years); 2) AAAA players who are good enough to do spot duty in the majors to replace injured players, to give them a place to play until they are needed; 3) Minor league journeyman who will never be quite good enough for the Show but who still have some talents and don't want to give up the game (and there is a need for those to fill out AAA rosters; some of them actually make some money, too).
  13. You are correct. I had forgotten that.
  14. Why not? Minor league contract. If he blossoms, great. If not, Rochester needs starting pitching right now anyway.
  15. Good! Liriano didn't deserve a L tonight - maybe we can still get him a W.
  16. And also because he's starting to lose his effectiveness - but all in all a good outing for him. Twins need to be scoring enough to cover a 3-run starting performance from Liriano. If we lose this, it's on the bats, not Liriano.
  17. For Minnesota fans wanting updates on Mitch Brown, he has now signed with Cleveland, for a $800,000 signing bonus ($140,300 over slot). The terms also include the value of a 4-year scholarship to USD, valued at $196,000. Way to go, Mitch. Good luck!
  18. I'm thinking about taking a road trip myself in August, to visit all the Twins minor league affiliates. The schedule aligns almost perfectly to get in 2 games at each club and still be able to drive between them. I might also be able to take in another MLB game (in Cincinnati) and some other minor league games in other towns as I drive through/stop for the night. Call it a mid-life crisis, or being inbetween jobs, or whatever.
  19. While I understand the appeal to keeping Morneau and hoping he regains his form and stays injury-free, I think if they can get something decent in return, and if they can offload his salary, then it is a no-brainer - make the deal. He's had spurts of effectiveness this year, but look at how he's faring against lefties. He's not the same player as pre-2010. Will he get there again? Maybe. But do we really want to spend another $20M to find out? At this point he is NOT irreplaceable. JMO. As far as Willingham, he stays unless they offer a starting pitching prospect who is a good bet to be on the big league roster this or next year.
  20. While you can go up to 5% and only pay a small tax, there is a possible future consequence for even exceeding by a penalty. Any draft pick which is forfeited by a team for exceeding the pool is giving out to another MLB team via a lottery prior to the draft's start. Exceeding the bonus pool invalidates participation in that lottery. This may not be a big deal; how many teams are going to exceed by over 5% and forfeit a draft pick? But it is a possible consequence.
  21. Get better players? Sorry, couldn't resist. Actually, Rochester is starting to show signs of life. They are only 6 games under 500, and while they are in last place, they are playing in the IL's version of the AL East. They'd be middle of the division in the South or West. And they're managing that with not much starting pitching (we took all their best guys).
  22. All-star voting is basically a popularity contest - it doesn't reflect actual performance. That's why I've always put more stock in the manager's picks to fill out the roster - those usually better reflect who should be there - although even then their decisions are often handcuffed a little by having to make sure every club is represented.
  23. That's the new thinking in how to improve an organization in general - appreciative inquiry. The model used to be to improve an organization you help people identify their weak areas and then help them improve those areas. Turns out it didn't work well; there might be some improvement, but not enough to justify the cost spent on the process. Now organizations seek to identify a person's strengths and then place them in a place where those strengths can really stand out and excel, and if there is no place for that in their organization, you cut them loose.
  24. Twins Lineup Span CF Revere RF Mauer C Willingham LF Morneau DH Plouffe 3B Parmelee 1B Casilla 2B Carroll SS SP: Diamond Phillies Lineup Rollins SS Polanco 3B Pence RF Thome DH Victorino CF Ruiz C Wiggington 1B Mayberry LF Martinez 2B SP: Blanton
  25. I did a quick check at baseball-reference.com, and here are the K/9, batting average, and OBP for the last 7 years: 2012: 7.5 K/9 .253 avg .319 OBP 2011: 7.1 K/9 .255 avg .321 OBP 2010: 7.1 K/9 .257 avg .325 OBP 2009: 7.0 K/9 .262 avg .333 OBP 2008: 6.8 K/9 .264 avg .333 OBP 2007: 6.7 K/9 .268 avg .336 OBP 2006: 6.6 K/9 .269 avg .337 OBP After that it balances out again for a few years, but clearly there has been a gradual trend toward more pitching and less hitting.
