  1. Yeah, that series in Oakland really tested my nerves.
  2. I don't think any of us want to see what you do with your hands during a Twins game.
  3. I understand Ron Gardenhire has a picture like this in his office too.
  4. To be fair, personal hygiene wasn't as big a deal back then.
  5. That post is out of bounds - as per recent changes to the comment policy all mentions of whisky must include age and brand.
  6. For the Twins to win the game. Was that not implicit in the post?
  7. On the bright side, after 1 inning Scherzer doesn't look dominant. Could this be an opportunity?
  8. It says a lot about a season when a fanbase is glad to get out of the first inning only down by a run.
  9. Interesting quote from Ryan. Wonder if that was an accidental slip or an intentional one.
  10. A good gameday manager, with tactical skills and acumen, can make a difference in close games. I have no problem with that being a part of the equation. It's like a symphony orchestra - you have to have quality musicians, but a good conductor is also an essential piece of the puzzle. Same idea here.
  11. I've wondered for some time whether they should go to a system similar to the NHL and the lower minor leagues. Maybe have 30-man rosters, but only 25 can be dressed and play in any particular game. That would make it easier to put somebody on the sideline for a few days to handle a niggling injury without having to do the "should we or shouldn't we DL him" thing. It also gives you more bench and reliever spots for any particular game as resting starters would not be taking a uniformed spot that day. The same thing could apply in September after callups - 40 players on roster, but only 25 dressed for any particular game.
  12. If I was a professional ballplayer, and I already had more money than I needed for the rest of my life, I would have to give serious consideration to exactly this. Morneau made a similar comment a couple of years ago, to the effect that it might get to the point where it's not worth continuing to play, and if that happened he would be OK with that. I think it would be very interesting to see the reaction of the fanbase if that actually happened (and note I am not in any way predicting it nor anticipating it - I'm just speculating for the sake of speculation) - how many would respect him for doing right by his family and how many would feel betrayed by his decision?
  13. I know. I like it anyway. It's right up there with: Billy Beane: Would you rather get one shot in the head or five in the chest and bleed to death? Peter Brand: Are those my only two options?
  14. One of my favorite parts of Moneyball: Scott Hatteberg: [Responding to being asked to play first base for the Oakland A's] I've only ever played catcher. Billy Beane: It's not that hard, Scott. Tell him, Wash. Ron Washington: It's incredibly hard.
  15. Where does Sano play then? First? Short?
  16. I would be curious to hear from those who have advocated him remaining as catcher because of the greater difficulty of finding a catcher who can produce offensively than a first baseman. I wonder if the length of his being sidelined, which is far longer than most people were anticipating, has given them any pause.
  17. One could make the case that it was allowing the move to drag out that allowed the Twins to get someone like Meyer in return. I seriously doubt (though I could be wrong) that his name was mentioned the first time Washington approached the Twins. And just because pundits or journalists are mooting a possible trade does not mean it was actually in the works. And certainly no one (or very few people) expected Revere to go so quickly afterward.
  18. The one thing I would add as something that should be looked at is not just acquiring prospects but are we being effective in translating them into true major league talent. I don't know the numbers on this, but certainly anecdotal evidence shows we are falling short in developing pitching. Rather than spending money on FA, I'd like to see more put into helping our current and future prospects truly reach their potential - if that means more money in minor league training, identifying needed coaching talents, etc - whatever needs to be done. They say the draft is somewhat of a crapshoot once you get beyond the first few picks. Anything we can do to increase the chances of finding and developing talent will help give us a competitive edge.
  19. I was just genuinely curious as to what he would do differently. Saying the Twins are doing it wrong doesn't help anything. Highlighting areas where changes to the current method of operations might be lead to more effectiveness can lead to a positive discussion. Of the 6 he mentioned, I would see #6, updating their scouting and analysis infrastructure, as the one that can have the most impact long-term and provide a cutting edge, and it wouldn't cost all that much (certainly much less than a top-line FA pitcher). #2-5 are all basically the same - spend on FA. That's been covered enough for my taste in this thread so I won't add my thoughts, other than it is highly dependent on who is available year to year, and that I understand the concerns about getting FAs and flipping them the same year - it could hurt the ability to recruit FAs in the future. #1 - trading Mauer is somewhat problematic, given his no-trade clause and given that he is, rightly or wrongly, in the eyes of many fans the face of the franchise. But for the right return I'm open to it. Same with Perkins - for the right return. I am not one of those who advocates becoming Houston and playing for draft picks - just not the way I'm built. When I'm at the ballpark I want to see a win; I don't care about the impact on draft position. I understand others feel differently and that's fine.
  20. Regardless of whether he is more than deserving than Mauer or not, kind of a nice change of pace to be talking about Dozier this way when last year many were ready to write him off as a failed experiment. Maybe we'll be having the same discussion about Hicks next year.
  21. What would be your advice and plan?
  22. Good points, and I hope no one is discounting either of these two based on first year performances. That said, how many other players struggled in their first season, and then continued to struggle simply because, for whatever reason, they just couldn't make the transition? Obviously I hope Gibson and Hicks don't end up in that category (and I suspect they won't) but we never know for sure until they show they can cut it up here.
  23. Maybe I'm dense here, but I don't understand the whole piranha reference in the first place. I go with he's out of things to say.
  24. Is anybody else really missing Morneau at first yet?
