  1. i'm firmly in the "meh" camp. Hard to have any angst about losing a guy in such a downward career spiral. He had shown enough raw talent just 2 year ago that he had many of us hoping he could steer himself out of it, but it clearly wasn't meant to be. But, I remain appalled at the lack of FO concern for better bolstering of the CF depth. And Benson seems like he would have been an ideal throw-in candidate for a trade deal in July if he would have been able to show just a little extended string of success between now and July 31. Either way, he would have been gone by the end of the year.
  2. Except the Giants also continued to strike gold in Free Agency while their prospects were developing. So it was a joint, big picture approach to building for success, not an "in spite of" approach. The club was undeterred by the FAs they struck out on, heck, they signed Randy Johnson at the end of his career, too. It's hard to believe that this has to be argued. As far as the Twins go....their foundation is being established and has been recognized by outside baseball experts as having one of the strongest groups of talent out there. You apparently are proposing that since most of these "foundation" guys are still in A ball, that the Twins wait at least 2 more years to call them up, dump the remaing veterans, including Mauer, and then endure 2-4 more years for the "foundation" to be "ready" to add FAs. That would put the club on pace for around 2018 to making a serious effort at signing the necessary FA pieces. Maybe they could go back after Mauer at that point, signing him as a FA off of Boston or whoever, as his contract expires....? I would strongly argue that there are more approaches than just your opined "only way" for digging out of this hole. There are real-time examples to prove as such.
  3. Excellent post, markos. I was going to throw KLAW, Sickels and Mayo into the mix, but I didn't have the exact rankings at my fingertips. I look forward to seeing where their adjusted rankings are at the break. The comp is extremely helpful, as well. I guess the Meyer backers for now will have to rely on FIP as the only statistically significant indicator that suggests Meyer is not the next Perkins. I still am convinced that the mechanics-to-height factor determinant in delayed development, can work itself out over time. At the tender age of 23, the development of a halfway decent change-up or splitter for a player with this talent-level, to go with 99MPH stuff, isn't out of the realm of possibility.
  4. Of course, they likely would have whiffed at the top guys- it's simply not in Ryan's nature to ever make a big splash signing, but there were plenty of guys 2 or more levels above Leviathan's refuse and recycle heap that the Twins seem so enamored to- there were, in fact, many flippable and serviceable short-term guys that they could have actively pursued to supplement the rotation, both in the 2012 and 2011 offseasons.
  5. Not a conspiracy buff, but why do the FO defenders not see that their only acceptable "perfect scenarios" for turning this thing around actually look and sound like paens and apologias for Ryan and the ownership.
  6. Or you can do both, as the Giants did, and they still "took care of the extra funds needed" by winning, developing prospects and augmenting with FAs in real time. With Twins-equivalent payrolls. It's a complete real-time refutation of your premise.
  7. Well-stated. Expect mod recriminations and chastisement to redound upon your PM box soon.
  8. I'm a huge JJ Hardy fan, he maximizes his defensive game with great smarts and instincts, augmented by his above-average size. His overall defensive rating at the top of baseball SS since 2006 reflects this. He was the 2012 Gold Glove recipient at the position. But he is definitely more of a Cal Ripken or Alan Trammel than a Jimmy Rollins or Omar Vizquel. Two ways to skin the cat.
  9. Hardy isn't rangy, just very reliable at making 99.9% of the plays he can get to. The Twins made the decision, and we still don't know who signed off on it, that a better option than Hardy was a guy with neither range nor a hint of reliability on making any plays in front of him, somehow they concluded Nishi was the perfect option for the Twins Way of solid defense behind Pitch to Contact. I reiterate, the wheels have come off this franchise and their philosophy ever since the day they got construction of Target Field approved.
  10. I hope trainers aren't doing the diagnosing, especially potential concussions, they should just be treating the symptoms. Doctors are for diagnoses.
  11. I'm not suggesting any sinister motives. It's just that human nature comes into play, publications can potentially increase their credibility by trying to have it both ways with a prospect...all with the chance in the end to claim: "See, I told you so...!" His performance at AA thus far should at the least encourage objective analysts that he still has an excellent shot at becoming a quality front-line starter. Gausman is only one year younger and though a higher-rated prospect, they produced close to the same numbers in their first go through the EL.
  12. The difference is that for Sid, it's been his modus operandi to gain access by shamelessly becoming "close personal friends" for whomever to gain the story. And has been rewarded handsomely for some 60 years. I think Seth needs to be granted some slack in this regard, I would tend to think this TD venture is a labor of love as much as anything. Still, that being said, I would like an elaboration on how he came to his stated conclusions. Especially for Rob Antony....
  13. Still, all we seem to have is an anonymous report. Was no one willing to put their name to this declaration that Meyer might be a bust? I agree about not penciling him in. As I posted at the time of the trades, the "seashells and balloons" crowd were misguided in their bubbling optimism that the Twins had acquired 2 Aces and a solid back of the rotation guy, when a 50% return rate on pitching prospects is very good and even a little on the high side.
  14. Was this report published before, or after, his performance thus far this season?
  15. He's only 23 and 6'9". Young, tall guys already loaded with good stuff and physical talent certainly deserve the benefit of the doubt about their developmental ceiling. I think it's pretty much accepted gospel, that Meyer's height, and tall players in general, means they automatically take longer to refine their mechanics. For example, the video of Meyer I saw of him after the acquisition showed that his release point varied wildly from pitch to pitch
  16. Who are the "respectable scouts" being cited?
  17. Well, they did wind up playing Revere in RF, which gave them probably one of the rangiest CF/RF combos in baseball last year. It seems to me that over the last 10 years or so, the Twins were looking for Corner OF range-less thumpers with a lynchpin strong CF to make up for their lack of range. Their MInfielders up until recently were pretty rangy. Starting in 2010 with Hardy, then Valencia, Plouffe, Nishi and the flavor of the day at 2B (exception, UI Casilla), not so much.
  18. Rowand and Zito at the top of the whiff list, yet 2 World Series to show for their alleged "risky and franchise-crippling" lack of prudence and foresight. Their payrolls essentially match the Twins until very recently, and even now is only in the $130M+ range- a number that could easily be justified is within shooting distance for the Twins "devote 50% of revenues to payroll model" claim- with a full ballpark nightly and the new TV deal.
  19. These are the same people that pronounced the Angels offseason as a complete flop after the first month of the season. (LA is currently on an 8 game winning streak as their bigger-name players are beginning to produce at rather predictable career rates of production) FWIW, after today, Revere for the month of May is now slashing at: .333/.377/.383. That SSS argument means as much in terms of evaluating the trade as what the original poster proffered. IE, nothing.
  20. This! For the life of me, how are these obvious points even debatable?
  21. I documented that the Giants were in a similar place as the Twins just a few years ago, they have also done perhaps the best in taking the big picture approach model. They've made a mistake or two on big-name FAs without crippling the franchise in the process. Exactly the opposite of what the Twins have done.
  22. Meyer is taking his first crack at AA and he is essentially #2 in the Eastern League in FIP (2.42), tied with Kevin Gausman who just debuted last Thursday with the Orioles. I think it's a little soon to take any reports seriously that would make those remarks. Are you confusing Meyer with May?
  23. Way back at one time, defense was a key component in doing things the "Twins Way." When your are down to Hicks as your only supposedly MLB-viable, key position, up-the-middle defender in CF, coupled with bad Range Factor ratings for your corner OF and 3B, this whole philosophy coupled with "Pitch to Contact" has come completely off the rails. And no, at this point, you would notice little difference with either Parm or Escobar in CF as alternatives, you might even see an uptick in quality.
  24. There may have been some bad luck involved on the play in question. But the THREE previous batters did hit the ball on the screws, Pelf's a gamer and a warrior and I for one appreciate the gutsy effort, but at that point, he was already on life support.
