  1. Kirby Puckett nailed it, in postgame interview after an infrequent Twins win in '95: "What happened to this team? We used to have Herbie over at First Base, who's that guy over there now (referring to Coomer)? Barney Rubble?"
  2. To be fair, he was struggling at the plate before the hamate bone to the wall, was there another injury that was hampering him going into 2012? Exactly when did the knee injury get diagnosed- no surgery until the post-season. And the bad hitting trends of last year carried over, even though the club has announced him "fully healthy." (Being that was Rob Antony saying that, probably want to take that with a grain of salt).
  3. Brad Swanson summed up Benson's ouster with this: "However, it is pretty clear that Benson did not fit in well with this organization. I really bristle at the Terry Ryan quote. I understand the desire to have Benson control the emotional part of his game, but if that is something he has been trying to do over the past two seasons, it isn't working. " We've been hearing reports about how high-strung Benson's personality is for quite a few years, and comments from inside that at times Joe was his own worse enemy. The challenge proved daunting for him at AAA, coupled with the string of injuries, the reports of emotional outbursts on the bench and the behaviors disrupting the rest of the players, are all out there. It's certainly in great doubt if Benson can ever be a legit big league player, this seems to be one of those classic instances that illustrate that "getting a new start" is the best outcome for both parties.
  4. And of course, his early season frustrations and apparent mental fragility led to him likely breaking his hamate bone by hitting a solid object of some kind.
  5. last season, Terry Ryan has this to say: "We just need to control the emotional part of his game; he gets a little excited," Ryan said. "We don't want to change his personality, I can tell you that, because he brings a little edge to him."
  6. That's certainly your prerogative. In this particular case, he confirmed what previous reports had been saying about Benson's struggles, and more of the same came just today from the Rochester beat writer, as well as from the Twins FO in explaining the DFA move.
  7. Just refer to every thread on Benson in the last fortnight of days. All the links are there- start with Thrylos's eyewitness report of about a week or two ago.
  8. There's your one-off, a marginal poster on TD, at best.
  9. All eyewitness reports, from TD participants, to Rochester media members, up to, and including from the Twins FO itself, indicate that Benson had checked out and was his own worst enemy. This is really beyond dispute. Yes, the upper levels of baseball do present a challenge, Benson's athleticism indicates he is better than the crash-and-burn numbers he produced at AAA and AA, both this year and last. The mental aspects to the game ( ie, the endless and inevitable repetition of failure over success at the plate) appears to be Benson's major impediment.
  10. No. The Twins don't tinker too much with established players, it's the younger up-and-comers who are getting the "message" as to the "acceptable" Twins approach to hitting.
  11. Are there ANY that have given up on Hicks?
  12. Shane, you do realize he left the Twins organization practically in full-fetal position? This game as much as any, perhaps except golf, is so mental. The guy had completely checked out, for whatever reason(s). Be that as it may, this is still close to 4/5ths on the Twins for not aiding Benson in unlocking whatever demons he was battling. If all it took to unlock the conundrum that Benson found himself in was a change of scenery, this obviously could have been handled better.
  13. He's clearly a curious case. He's played every position this year except P,C and 1B (and he played 1B last year). Another Cesar Tovar with a better bat? It seems the Twins are not sure where he fits in yet in the field, but they obviously feel he has enough talent to hit at Hi-A- and in 17 games he's proving them right. I'd like to hear a scout's analysis about his best fit, I hope he doesn't need to go back to rookie ball to learn his position- let him learn whatever it turns out to be at the highest level possible for his hitting prowess to continue to blossom.
  14. I believe the master of graphs, himself, can create one reflecting Mauer's rather curious on-again, off again contact rates this year.
  15. Penciled in for E-Town...it would be just like the Twins to demote him back to short-season, even if he keeps this up, can't mess up the "master plan."
  16. I believe there's an app for that. DicknWhoever are pretty much unlistenable, Gladden on play by play, as well. He does much better as the color guy.
  17. Yup. Hopefully a happy ending.
  18. After tonight, it's now 3 HRs in three games. Plus, he added a triple. The Twins brass was apparently correct that a change of scenery would be for the best for all parties.
  19. Starting to become a trend? Benson with his 3rd HR in 3 games...oh....plus a triple tonight...
  20. But...how many ex-Twins are publicly attributing at least some of their current success to the foundational approaches to hitting learned by following "The Twins Way"?...and how many more are willing to publicly berate that "Way"?
  21. I get confused, did Braun share his "cream" with Segura and his "clear" with Gomez, or was it the other way around? The 3 of them are taking out some serious 'roid rages on these meatball pitches.
  22. Just a reiteration of a long-ago prediction. Son of Sal stays on the roster until he qualifies for his ML pension.
  23. Or, putting it in Ortiz terms, the Manager for Rangers AA affiliate, Frisco, might have said something to the effect of what the Red Sox manager said to Ortiz in 2003: "This isn't the Twins!!! Stop swinging like a girl....!!!"
  24. Unrequited man-crush love is the worst of all.
