  1. When DicknBert produce "research", it's usually agenda-driven. Someone either being subliminally championed or being thrown under the bus.
  2. If Bert is involved in the conversation, it is definitely a more traditional stat.
  3. Exactly what I was thinking, I especially like Parmelee in the 2-hole in front of Mauer, Parm has an excellent chance to go deep tonight.
  4. A high-performing-in-high-leverage-situations lefty is worth more to a team than your average closer- virtually every contending team has Perkins at the top of their reliever wish list- in the closer role, or not.
  5. A somewhat amazing, but all-too-familiar story. Although Cedar Rapids is #4 in W-L overall in the Midwest League, they rank 12th in ERA, at 4.22. In hitting, the Kernels are #1 in BA, OBP, SLG, and of course, OPS. Going up the organization, we all know the Ft Myers has the highest winning percentage in all of baseball at .640 (55-31). And again, they are leading the FSL in BA, OBP, SLG and of course, OPS. But the pitching staff is still just middle of the road, ranking 5th in ERA (3.62 in a "pitchers league") out of 12 teams in the League. New Britain is ranked 6th in OPS, as well as 6th in ERA (4.03), in a 12-team league, and that's with the addition of some very good arms added to the roster in 2013. Rochester is ranked 11th in a 14-team league in ERA (4.44) and 8th in OPS (.736). Going down the organization, although not necessarily statistically significant yet, but worth mentioning that both E-Town and the GCL Twins are ranked 3rd in their respective leagues in ERA. Bottom line, Jake Mauer's complaint is justified, there's much work left to do in acquiring and developing arms if the Twins hope to be relevant and competitive again.
  6. Jason Marquis 3.28 K/9 Twins 7.6 K/9 Padres Jesse Crain 6.22 K/9 Twins 10.56 K/9 Sox Kyle Lohse 5.01 K/9 Twins 5.60 K/9 Since traded RA Dickey 5.88 K/9 Twins 6.83 K/9 Since traded Kevin Slowey 6.67 K/9 Twins 7.20 K/9 Marlins Matt Guerrier 5.91 K/9 Twins 6.53 K/9 Dodgers Matt Garza 7.11 K/9 Twins 7.68 K/9 Since traded The trends are all negative, but I'm not sure they are statistically significant. What if the question is asked in reverse, how much does a pitcher's K/9 drop after joining the Twins?--- Vance Worley 4.62 K/9 Twins 7.71 K/9 Phillies Kevin Correia 5.04 K/9 Twins 6.04 K/9 before Twins Mike Pelfrey 4.90 K/9 Twins 5.08 K/9 before Twins Josh Roenicke 5.77 K/9 Twins 6.81 K/9 before Twins Matt Capps 5.39 K/9 Twins 6.93 K/9 before Twins Carl Pavano 4.83 K/9 Twins 5.75 K/9 before Twins Probably the National League effect to a certain extent.
  7. I'm scratching my head figuring who else in baseball could possibly be safe after 3/90. It's possible that Dale Sveum with the Cubs might lose 90 this year, which would be his second year in a row, what with all the roster restructuring in Chicago, he's looking pretty safe to survive through next year (3rd year on his 3-year deal, plus a club option for 2015), even with a third year of 90 losses. Connie Mack had 6 of 7 years of 90+ losses, 1940-46. Of course, he couldn't fire himself. At the other end of the spectrum, Bo Porter and Mike Redmond are both bright, young managers who, because of their circumstances seemingly have good shots at going 3/90, although the way the Marlins have been playing since June 1, what with all the good, cost-controlled pitching and some good young position players on Miami, even Jeff Loria might not be able to screw it up enough for the Marlins to have three consecutive 90+ losing seasons.
  8. I'm in the same position as you, Levi- former Chicagoan with a lot of continued ties to the area. Cubs fans that I talk to are ecstatic, as there now is a definite plan in place, the club is no longer just digging themselves a deeper hole.
  9. An eventual readjusted strand-rate and BABIP normalization, FIP, xFIP and SIERA all suggest that the Cubs aren't "stuck" with Jackson at all. As other posters have suggested, the Cubs will likely move him when he strings together his next good run of starts- he's already pitched real well in 4 of his last 6 starts- if he's not moved by the deadline, it could just as easily happen the next time he goes on a run- the Cubs have proved that they have their ducks lined up and are ready to pull the trigger.
  10. Hiring any one of the top brass at Tampa Bay (Matt Arnold) is a campaign I've been on for some time, the results of the last 4 days speak for themselves. The Glynn connection should make the club amenable to pursuing the concept further.
  11. Alomar is an excellent choice, I threw out Pudge's name in the offseason. Dave Duncan would be a perfect interim coach and should now be available with his wife passing last month.
  12. Huh? Did i miss something?
  13. Our standards for minimal expectations have dropped significantly if KC's start was "pretty good". I will grant that he was pretty good at dodging bullets last night (literally and figuratively). He had his worse stint in terms of wildness on the season- 5 BBs and only 58 strikes out of 108 pitches. His single-game ERA was 5.06 and with the 5 hits given up had a WHIP close to 2.00. The big problem is how predictably ineffective he becomes in his "big out situations." On 3-1 counts this year, Correia is giving up an unbelievable .1825 OPS with a .483 OBA. Guess what the count was on Kelly Johnson in the 6th inning? Guys (like Kelly Johnson) batting 7-9 in the batting order have a BA of .320 and an .845 OPS on the season, unacceptable. Though not applicable tonight, on the theme of big-out situations, with 2 outs, KC for the season is letting batters hit .342BA with a .893 OPS.
  14. Your desires are apparently too negative.
  15. Last time I checked the standings, I counted 30 teams ( and not the 28-team league that a certain group tried to push through a few years back, and certainly not 32, go check back with the NFL board for a 32-team league). I'd let it go, but you went on the attack in your closing statement, needlessly, IMHO. One particular side to this argument has always asserted that in the Amateur Draft, it's all a crap shoot after the top 10 or so guys. Since that is their position (not necessarily yours) in that particular draft, I think it is perfectly reasonable to expect some consistency from that side in this particular debate. The Twins ranking (#4) going into the International Draft should suggest that they have a decent shot, financially, at signing a top 10 guy- that, by the very argument stated by the side that now opposes its own argument, should yield the least chance for a crap shoot outcome, and the most chance for gaining another high impact player. One thing we all can agree on, the organization has put in the time in the international market, and are establishing strong, long-term relationships in the current hottest markets (like the Dominican and Venezueal), as well as establishing a pioneering presence and looking for potential values in as-yet untapped markets. They have a strong need in identifying and being willing to risk a little bit more in locking down more high-ceiling guys at the glaring positions of need
  16. Could the Trade Talk series be pinned into its own group? I think for the next 2-3 weeks this will be the nexxus topic, especially compared to the on-field performance. I'm interested in hearing the outlook for trading with the Red Sox and especially, the Orioles. The Birds have a yawning need for another lefty in the bullpen and Jim Johnson is having a near-creaky year as the closer- 6 blown saves and a near-4.00 ERA. Plus, they are already enamored with former Twins- they could really use a right-handed bat like Trevor Plouffe- he would be clearly a superior option at DH- he would be 4th ranked batter in OPS on the Orioles, at .773. Two cheap options in areas of need, plus the Orioles are very hungry to build on last season's success.
  17. Talking about one of the shrines of baseball that way?, you do realize you are in a minority that probably constitutes .01% of genuine baseball fans? Your expectations need to be adjusted for a nearly century-old neighborhood ballpark, not a downtown artificial architectural facsimile rendering, no close-by interstate exits, with a unique atmosphere, both inside the park and all along the near-Northside strip along Clark St.- incomparable in baseball
  18. Radcliffe teased that another promotion for Buxton was on the table in Jeremy's article. He's currently batting 3rd in the Ft Myers order in front of Vargas, let's see if that gets him more pitches to choose from over the next month. I'd like to see Buxton make the decision to promote an easy one.
  19. Seth- Any word on Beresford's chances for getting a September call-up? His is yet another great story in the organization of a hard-working over-achiever who, against the odds, has to be earning management's respect and consideration. While I'm not counting on his being a big bat on the Twins, I know you've labeled him as sure-handed in the field, would you say he's MI major-league-ready?.... And/or comparable to anyone else currently on the ML roster? Project as a quality utility guy just down the road? Become throw-in trade bait- or force someone else to become considered for trade bait?
  20. Part of the introduction of the WAR concept for pitchers was to cut through the clutter revolving around "luck"- good or bad. Marcum and Jackson are examples of 2, who pitching in a different set of circumstances would prove to be close to the value set down in their production numbers. Jeremy Guthrie would be having a season that is the "good luck" antithesis of Marcum's and Jackson's- and Guthrie signed for a contract in the middle of these two. (Correia has been a little lucky, but not like Guthrie has). I would have been very pleased had the Twins, besdies signing Correia, had also signed both Jackson and Correia- even knowing what we know now.
  21. Barring some complete and utter collapse or injury, Gibson is not being demoted. And the era of Swarzak as a spot starter has also come to an end. Young arms and second chance arms will man the breaches in the rotation, if Tonkin performs well in his short opportunity in the spotlight, he has a very thin chance of sticking (highly unlikely that a trade will create that opening by Saturday), but I'd bet a nickel he'll be back in Rochester on Sunday.
  22. My concern rate is -50%. Are we really debating the fates and fortunes of a very young man's career- on what essentially amounts to statistical noise concerning Sano's first 26 games- all the while being the youngest player in AA?
  23. But that was then, and this is now. Swarzak has been absolutely horrible over the last 30 days- 5.29 ERA 1.71 WHIP .352 OBA Gotta go with any other option that points towards the future instead of the past.
  24. Don't know that answer, but KSTP is reporting the funeral is Friday, with Thielbar on Thu-Sat. bereavement leave.
