    The only personnel discussed for whom Ryan broke the wall of non-answer answers on- for his personal and public "votes of confidence"- were Perkins ("good") and Hicks, Arcia and Parmelee. Everyone else- in Ryan codespeak, was just "ok", worse than that, or a victim of circumstance.

    You'll have to include Gomez in your depressive state--- just by what they ended up thinking was what they thought of Hardy's value.

    ....or in other words....right on par with the typical player in the Twins development schedule. Look at the Red Wings roster....for position players, James Beresford (24) and Chris Hermann (25) are the only ones on the roster that young. I gotta think Richardson will be traded before then, as the Twins will be actively looking to begin adding better prospects to the 40-man- beginning this off-season.

    The invocation of Pujols' name is certainly interesting. The 3-team option should definitely be on the table for Buxton. Pujols, in the year 2000, at age 20, played 109 games in the Midwest League for Peoria with a slash line of .324/.389/.565/.953 (compare this to Buxton's Midwest League slash of .341/.431/.559/.990!!! at age 19)... followed by 21 games at High A in the Carolina League and then 3 games in AAA- with mediocre numbers at each SSS stop. Yes, it's been said before..... but if things continue to go this well for Buck at Ft Myers (again, the FSL is supposedly the "pitcher's league"), I'd like to see the organization give him an opportunity to try out another level (AA or AAA) for a SSS in August, and then get a call-up in 2014 after the arb. date. 2014 is shaping up as another year of extreme puntage anyway. Why not call him up at some point next year before the September expansion of the rosters?

    Anyone "national expert" that "kindly" praised the Twins method for acquiring Starting Pitching the last 2 offseasons immediately disqualifies himself as a "national expert."

    You know it's going bad when the Twins post-game consists of an offseason signing by the Wild and Marnie pimping some new athletic facility opening up in Sioux Falls, SD- apparently sponsored by Sanford Health- so just an extended commercial.

    We had a stopper, he's working his way towards a Top 5 finish in the Cy Young balloting right about now..... and legitimate postseason possibilities.

    2-7 so far, on the 18-game Stretch of Death heading into the All-Star break. 6-12 looks a little optimistic right about now.

    Sounds like someone questioning the man in charge of President Lincoln's security detail at Ford's Theatre....who responded: "That inadvertent and inconvenient shooting of the Prez was unfortunate, "otherwise", the Show was sure Boffo, excepting for when one of the performers inexplicably flubbed his line during the shooting... heh, we probably won't see him around the big stage much anymore...overall though, I give the Play itself 4 stars...what a production!!!"

    I'm not sure it's "so upset", as much as the organization needing to define its intentions on being either a rebuilding or contending team and further, recognizing when you HAVE to sell high, even if the "high" isn't getting you the return you hoped for- you take the most "serious" offer out there. It is certainly arguable that there are many contending teams this year that have major underperformers in their DH spot- how hard did the Twins try to sell that option to these prospective teams (especially during their dead period leading up to Spring Training), perhaps as part of a bigger package? This certainly is not coming about as some new revelation, the debate about moving Willingham.....- for heaven sakes, the guy was in the midst of his Career Year at age 33- .....was going on one year ago to the day, and continued into the offseason. Certainly, the Span trade to the Nats had been brewing for 2 years and had to have been factored in to how the Twins envisioned their 2013 OF already. Did the surprise Revere offer from the Phillies really convince the Twins to hold steady on Willingham? Apparently so. The Twins missed their window on Willingham, whatever it may have been; hopefully, he has a full recovery so he can be salvageable as a much-needed RH power bat over the last year and a half of his contract.

    Except that Ryan already had those 2 other spots replaced on the very days they traded Span and Revere- and they had their back-up set, as well. There are alwasy plenty of FA OF roster-place-holders and guys like Clete Thomas in the system that could have held down the LF spot until the situation with Arcia (and Thomas, himself) gained more clarity. In addition, Gardy has also proven he was willing to resume playing time for Doumit in the OF, as well. Based on the lack of virtually any transaction activity from mid-December to Spring Training (Rafael Perez signing in February was virtually the only activity during those 3.5 months by the Twins), the Twins either: turned the phones off, didn't hear an offer worth considering, were convinced that Willingham was a cornerstone piece of the franchise for the life of his contract or, were banking on a 2013 July deadline deal.... they gambled and lost. It happens.

    This was actually Blackburn's 2nd start. He's gone 4 innings both starts. In low-Rookie League. I guess it just goes to show that $5.5M doesn't go as far as it used to. I wonder if they will give Blackie a Nishi-type promotion in August after he's stretched out? I don't wonder if the Twins will pick up his $8M team option for 2014.

    Everything Chief says is valid in theory. The question that remains though is: How do you get from current Point A (looking up from the depths and with glaring holes in the roster at key positions) to Point B (well-rounded roster loaded enough for annual consideration as a WS contender)? If you have very few blue chip trading options, you either have to look for a blow-me-away offer, or seek the other routes to fill those holes. Right now there are too many holes that need filling... and... regarding FA, the Twins seem less than willing in filling all of those holes through FA and developing prospects, alone- you can help to jump-start the contention hopes for 2015 by getting as many ducks in a row, as soon as possible, starting with this trading season, and again in the offseason. The bullpen seems to have been one area that Ryan excels at finding guys cheaply to fill the necessary and vital roles- and he certainly has stocked the minor league affiliates with live arms, up and down the system. In short, if you get a bidding war for Perkins that can potentially change the outlook and projection for contention of the franchise to a shorter time-frame, you have to pull the trigger.

    1) Complaints about the complaints concerning payroll could be offered the same observation about also being tiresome. Analogically, putting the highest quality wood putty into 3 out 8 leaks in the sinking ship of state is hardly grounds derv-ed of nominations for Executive of the Year. Remember, the rationale given by ownership was that the new stadium was going to "solve" the problems about being consistently competitive with the big market teams and not having to endure "10 year rebuilding in the wilderness plans." Were we as fans supposed to be as cynical as ownership has proven to be, or were we naive to think that the organization would so quickly break up "The Plan" after just one disastrous season in 2011??? 2) The Occam's Razor analogy should have little play in a club that traded away 2 starting OFers for 2 starting pitchers years away from seeing the majors and another SP who was cast away from the Phillies in favor of signing FA John Lannan- a player that Ryan didn't want from the Nats- people forget that Lannan could have been acquired as a throw-in by the Twins in the Span trade. Also, the term "outfielder" can only loosely be applied to Josh, especially when he's playing hurt. Trading Josh away would have actually fit in perfectly in Occam's philosophy of parsimony with a team that is, in fact, "rebuilding". Acquiring assets and then flipping them that aren't part of the long-term plan at their highest potential value is a pretty clear Occam's Razor rationale.

    I advocated for the move at the time and welcomed the acquisition of Willingham. The problem was that the "found" money by economizing with the replacements only led to increasing the Twins win total by all of 3 GAMES. You simply have to have other corresponding moves with the found money to replace the gaping holes in the roster going into both 2012 and 2013. Ryan confounded this error of omission by failing to trade Willingham in the offseason.
